“Name That Tune” Revived for MTV

Name That Tune will be revived after all, but not for CBS.  Each of the three MTV networks; MTV, VH1, and CMT; has picked up six episodes to air in the first quarter of 2008.  The show’s format will be the same across all three networks, but the music will change to fit its core audience.  When does VH1 do music anymore, anyway, or should we just be expecting some D-list celebrities to sing about the past week’s events in a humorous manner?  No word on hosts or formats yet.

This is…uh…odd. I don’t know whether I’m happy about this or not because one of the things I loved about any of the previous versions of the show was that they spanned various genres of music, and thusly, were challenging. Oh well…the dumming down of game shows continues. I’m all for new game shows, but make then well produced, if possible.

Yeah, who would know what MTV & VH1’s core audiences music tastes are anymore, but, my guesses:

    CMT - Country (obviously)
    MTV - Hiphop/R&B and current Top 40
    VH1 - Adult Contemporary and 70s-90s Top 40

    Oh now that is odd.

There’s been two versions of a format running simultaneously (Link a few years back, Wheel a long way back, presumably Deal next year), but three must be a first.

VH1 still plays music in the UK, although not 24/7. MTV, on the other hand… pretty much doesn’t, and instead there are multiple MTV-branded channels playing different types of music (the almost self-explanatory MTV Hits and MTV Dance, MTV Base for R&B, MTV2 for music Alex might not hate, probably some others I’ve forgotten).

Anyway, I digress. It’ll be interesting to see how this works out.

Heck MTV2 barely plays music anymore. VH1 has a network called “VH1 classics” and they play music almost all day. They mostly play stuff from the 80’s.

But this NTT sounds really weird. I guess it won’t hurt to give it a shot.

This reminds me too much of Law & Order, You have Homicide, SVU, and CI. Now…

    Name That Tune: MTV
    Name That Tune: VH1
    Name That Tune: CMT

I guess “Name That Tune: Polka” is the Equivalent of Trial by Jury.

(This randomly came up when I first read it.)

I was hoping BET would join in.

Music today for the msot part is crap. IMO don’t get me wrong there are some good artists. could go either way. the hsot will have a huge part of it though. I think we can rule out Donny Osmond, becuase he’s too busy shooting 2 shows already in UK.

Some young unknown Mtv Prettyboy will host the show

All this really means is Viacom didn’t want to put it on prime time, so they put it on cable instead.

I think a lot of it is because “Power of 10″ scored such good ratings. However, with the state of pop music being where it is, I think I would’ve preferred CBS to handle the show. With Viacom, it’ll be watered down, and cater to their specific demographic.
