“Name That Tune” Returns as Live Stage Show

Name That Tune, the classic music guessing game show, is making a comeback.  It won’t be on television, however.  The game will be returning as a live stage show in Las Vegas.  The stage show will update the iconic format to meet today’s standards and give 100 players a chance to win cash and prizes.  The music will span most genres so you’re sure to find something you like.  The show begins at the Imperial Palace Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas on Thursday, August 18th.

Several attempts to bring the show back to television have been tossed around over the past few years.  CBS picked up the format with host Donny Osmond before dropping the primetime pitch.  Later the show stayed in the Viacom family with separate versions for MTV, VH1, and CMT being announced for their respective genres (I have no idea what genre VH1 would possibly be so someone will have to fill me in).  It’s been silent since then.

“Of the many great shows we’ve produced in Las Vegas over the years, the interactive nature and iconic musical history Name That Tune Live! brings to the Las Vegas Strip have me particularly excited,” said Adam Steck, founder and CEO of SPI Entertainment. “It will help fill a void in the Las Vegas entertainment scene, providing musical fun with a very affordable price.”

Name That Tune will run all days except Tuesdays at 3:00PM with an additional show Fridays at 7:30PM.  Tickets are $49.95.  Click here to find tickets.

As far as VH-1, I think they would go for more contemporary music, whereas MTV would focus on rock-’n-roll and CMT would focus on… well… country. :-)

  • ????? says:

VH1 sort of did revive Name that Tune as Name that Video in Spring 2001 . Bid a Note was called Bid a Vid. Their version of the Golden Medley was to ID 10 music videos and artists in 60 seconds to win a car and a collection of 100 CDs. Karin Bryant hosted. Sandy Frank’s name was seen in the end credits. How one would get an orchestra to do some modern music G-d knows. Tommy Oliver himself(he said this in an interview before his death) had a hard time figuring out some 80s tunes during the Lange era, and the last two years of the Kennedy version added a rock band to handle the more recent hits.

Which casino? There are three out here with “Palace” in them: Caesars Palace, Imperial Palace, and Palace Station.

    • James D. says:

It’s the Imperial Palace on the Strip. They’ve been looking for some shows/acts for sometime since losing their long-running “Legends in Concert” tribute show some time back.

  • James Greek says:

Phil Gurin tried to revive Name That Tune in 2001. But his version never came to air. And Question Mark, I think the interview with Tommy Oliver you are talking about was the one with Steve Beverly in 2000. He said that they did odd orchestral renditions of “Sweet Dreams are made of this” and “Na Na Na (Hey Hey Hey) Kiss Him Goodbye.”

Also I think they won a car during Name That Video too. A Toyota 4-Runner if I recall.

  • ????? says:

The 4-runner was the car on Name that Video, yes. At least two or three clips of people winning it are on YT.

  • Eric says:

To think, I’ll be arriving in Vegas on the 18th and staying at the Imperial Palace… Is this an omen? $54.95 is pretty steep though and I’m more of a trivia head than music…

  • ????? says:

Atlantic City Tpir Live was charging $25.00 a ticket in 2006, LMAD Live I think was charging $25 plus taxes this Summer.

  • Jay says:

If the stage show becomes popular, maybe the show will come back to television…in it’s proper form and not another “Name that Video” format.

  • James Greek says:

Phil Gurn bought the rights to make up for name that video.

  • Eric says:

Saw this Live on the 19th… I could write a dissertation on what needs to be fixed. That said, the show was a riot. One lady was drunk, got nicknamed “doubles” and people epic failed on a Lady Gaga mash-up round.

If you choose to go, get tix from one of the Half Price ticket booths. Price comes down to about $37 per person (not quite half, no?)

And if anyone wants to put me in touch with the producers, I’ll happily compose my dissertation for them so that everyone’s viewing experience is improved should they get to Vegas to see the show.
