“Minute to Win It” Renewed

More of an actual post when I get back to my office but NBC’s Minute to Win It has been renewed. The ratings have been tepid at best so it’s a bit shocking it got picked up despite it’s cheapness. More coming in soon.

I think it’s just a sign that NBC would rather be cheap in its programming rather than think outside the box and take a chance (aren’t they the same network who rejected a possible Concentration revival in favor of the monstrosity known as Kathie Lee & Hoda’s Today?). I agree with Rob that changes are needed at the top if they ever want to get out of the quicksand that’s mere inches from obliterating them. Sad to see a once-proud network going down to hell.

Actually, David, they’ve rejected the Concentration revival in favor of the third hour of Today, but all the same. And it’s not that GE doesn’t care, they stopped caring back in 2005 when all of the shows that got them to the top (Friends, Fraiser, Will & Grace) have either ended or was ending. I don’t think Comcast will help it either. The only plus that will come from the NBC-Comcast deal is Comcast using NBC as leverage for Versus to compete against ESPN.

As for Minute to Win It getting renewed, surprised at that one. Then again, ABC renewed Duel a couple of years ago with ratings lower, if not identical, than that.

  • Rob says:

This is a sign that NBC has no programming left — and that GE doesn't really care about doing anything about it.

Never thought I'd be rooting for Comcast to take something over… but they can't do any worse with NBC than GE has. Can they?

The ratings have actually been much higher than most NBC programming. NBC's ratings itself are "tepid at best" but MTWI is doing okay.

In the end this may help out CBS to green light The Cube officially. Any new news on that? It could challenge Minute in the summer depending when Minute is since Cube is a summer show.

NBC has been through times like these before. Thirty years ago, their ratings were so tepid (to put it mildly) that they had to figure out a way to shoehorn Gary Coleman (their only real star at the time) into three episodes of "Buck Rogers"–and one of them was a cheater made up of clips from other episodes!
What saved the Peacock's tail feathers was the rise of "The Cosby Show", and the return to public favor of the sitcom, which was being written off about thirty years back.
As a lay observer, it seems to me that NBC is hoping for history to repeat itself. Well see if it does, and what form it takes. But we can be assured that "Minute to Win It" is not the answer. Its ratings on Wednesday night were, according to reports, as spectacular as the Sunday night ratings!

This can only be in the hope it's up against The Cube in the summer and can kill it by means of making it look like a copycat.

CBS need to go on the attack and point out their show came first.

Early prediction: Don't be surprised if NBC creates a Friday night block of Minute, Who Do You Think You Are and Dateline this fall. Friday is now the night for low-cost, low-risk programming, and all three shows fit the bill.

Hmm… didn't they try that with 1 vs. 100 and Identity a while back? What's old is new again… :)
