“Millionaire” Tournament of Ten Day Seven: Matt Schultz

Posted by Alex Davis On November - 17 - 2009

MattSchultz2Only four days left until Who Wants to be a Millionaire crowns its first $1,000,000 winner in an unbelievably long time.  Sitting in the Hot Seat yesterday was Tim Janus, a competitive eater from New York City.  In his previous appearance he won $100,000 and had to risk going down to $25,000 by answering his million dollar question:

Who once wrote, “‘Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations’ is an admirable work,” a quotation now listed in “Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations”?
A: Truman Capote, B: John Lennon, C: Winston Churchill, D: Mark Twain.

Tim didn’t know and didn’t want to risk $75,000 guessing so he walked away.  If he had to take a wild guess, he would have went with C, which was correct.  He looked a little angry but easily did the right thing.  You can’t gamble that on a blind guess.  Given how no $50,000 winners but one would risk just $25,000 for a $950,000 gain, and given the difficulty of the million dollar questions, I can’t see anyone else going for it unless it’s a crazy guess.  Right now Sam Murray, the only person to answer a $1,000,000 question correctly, remains with the million dollar check.

Matt Schultz, a youth pastor from New Jersey, is going to try to take it off of him today.  Watch out for spoilers on Millionaire’s website or on television.  They are just about telling you who won the million bucks at this point.  At the very least they make it very clear who will be holding onto the $1,000,000 check when the number one seed takes a shot at the money.  Here’s a video about Matt Schultz.

  1. Ice Cube Said,

You are practically running a mini commercial for Millionaire everyday, but a former game show hosts dies and there is no mention of it.

  2. Craig Said,

Look, Alex is busy right now. What do you want him to do? Scour every nook & cranny of the Internet? There are better ways to go about this. Just leave him alone right now. He'll get around to it when he's ready. Right now, we're in the "sweeps" period. When that's over, things will settle down somewhat before NATPE in 2010.

As for Millionaire, I feel pretty good about Sam's chances right now. But, me start to worry that Matt might swipe it away from him. I just hope Sam's still alive, but my gut feeling says otherwise. We'll see. Bring on #4 Matt Schultz!

  9. parliboy Said,

Alex mentions the "crazy guess" criterium. For me, the pause in a situation like that is this: before the choices appear, I already have a answer in mind. If that's one of the four choices, I have to weigh my options. Tim Janus' question game me such a situation. Unfortunately, as I saw the question, I said to myself, "sounds like Mark Twain." So I would have a) gone for it and b) blown it.

    Still, those crazy guesses happen.

The number one seed is where things are most interesting for me. As she can't be bumped, and she's getting better than pot odds on her money, if she has an educated guess, what does she do?

  12. Wayne Said,

I'd just like to know if these questions have been randomly pulled from the regular pool of $1m questions, or were they written specifically for this tournament. I just find it strange that not only have the contestants guesses been correct most of the time, but I've even known 4/7 of them.

Interesting thing about the MASH/Alice question–I remember the day very well since everyone was having MASH parties and such. The episode of Alice even involved subject matter I was interested in and I had a hard time deciding on watching that or seeing the first episode of MASH being shown on a local station at 8pm, so I even knew the answer before the choices came up, and remembered the plot of the Alice episode! It was the one where Alice thought she saw a UFO and it turned out to be a weather balloon.

  15. t c Said,

Logically these would be written specifically for the tournament, and then randomly selected.

SINCE contestants DO NOT get to use any lifelines, the producers do NOT have to make the questions so obscure since NO PHONE-A-FRIEND is able to Google the answer.

That's why most other (newer) MDQ's the question is so random because if there is the possibly someone could PAF then the friend could never possibly google the answer.

For example, try Googling Lyne Payne's MDQ – I could not find the answer anywhere!

Maybe this another reason why PAF is leaving.
