“Millionaire” Kicks Off Tenth Season on September 5th with Big Money, Big Prizes, and “Club Millionaire”
It’s a milestone year for Who Wants to be a Millionaire. The quiz show, hosted by Meredith Vieira, is entering its tenth season in daily syndication on Monday, September 5th. The previous season shook Millionaire up and brought in a refreshed format, set, and music for the long running show. This season will be added a few small tweaks to the established show which will bring bigger money, big prizes, and a new way for you to interact with the show and play the game for $1,000,000.
The most exciting addition for you, the viewer, is “Club Millionaire“. This viewer reward system just requires you to watch the show and submit daily keywords. By doing this you can win great prizes like electronics, trips, and more. Best of all, at least three club members will win a spot as a contestant on the show a chance to take the show’s million dollar top prize. The Club begins this September. Log onto the show’s site and sign up for the club. Watch Millionaire every day, enter keywords revealed each day, and you may be on your way to New York City.
We already discussed the addition of “Double Your Money” days. These will double one randomly selected dollar value during round one. This means one question can be worth up to $50,000. These will air through the season but kick off during the week of September 26th. Other additional tweaks this season include adding prizes to round one. During special weeks some of the questions will be randomly chosen to have a prize behind it. Prizes can be anything from appliances to trips. According to the show’s official rules if you answer a question with a prize attached correctly, the prize is yours no matter what. A wrong answer will not lose your prize.
More celebrity specials and themed weeks are being added which gives some of your favorite personalities a chance to win big money for charity. It kicks off with “Celebrity Week” on September 19th in honor of World Alzheimer’s Month and Alzheimer’s Action Day on September 21st. The Ghost Hunters, from their self titled SyFy show, will return on October 26th. Other weeks include Broadway Week on November 7th, a crossover with Extreme Makeover Home Edition on November 18th, an appearance by Mike Rowe of Discovery’s Dirty Jobs, and an appearance by Johnathan and Andy Hillstrand of Discovery’s Deadliest Catch.
I was a very outspoken fan of last season and I think it did add a lot of drama and excitement to a show that got too complacent and stagnant. We’re seeing the same thing happen with the British version now. I can’t wait to see all these new changes in action starting September 5th.

Really excited about this season!!! Can’t wait!
I really don’t like the idea of prizes given out instead of money.
I haven’t seen anything definite, but I think the prizes are IN ADDITION to the dollar amount.
There was something in the rules last year that would allow for that, and when the new format was announced and I looked at the rules, this was one of the first things I thought of an mentioned it on one of the message boards (might have been this one). So I don’t think any rule changed, but they are now going to use it (something like “from time to time at the producer’s discretion…).
What I’m not really a fan of is the “sometimes we will do a little something extra, whenever we please, maybe if we just like this contestant better than the others, and sometimes we don’t do squat” nature of the doubling and the prizes.

Amen, but that’s the whole point of this show. They need pretty people who aren’t necessarily the smartest, otherwise they wouldn’t have a guy who got all the answers right on the qualifying quiz be asked one question in the interview stage. They need to go back to the phone qualification. That’s when they got people who had half a chance to win the money. The Meredith Viera version, aside from the shuffle format, is a bust for me. It’s become about which contestant looks the best, and Viera is a crap host in comparison to Regis.
OH MY BROTHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!! TESTIFY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Are the prizes given out instead of money for the question, or in addition to?
Are they airing in HD this season?
I clicked on the link, and they didn’t mention anything about it. Maybe it’s not starting up until the season begins?
@Jeff Yes
Please no more celebrity editions. Remember what happened ten years ago with Millionaire.
Has this format not reached the end of it’s useful life – c’mon surely there’s easier ways to become a millionaire!
Usually not a fan of celebrity weeks. This year WILL be different. Saw a taping of several episodes, and there where some damn good guests and some incredible moments. Definitely not something you’d want to miss.
P.S. The audience doesn’t look too good. Everyone waited out in a torrential downpour and then were given purple Alzheimer’s t-shirts. If you see a rather exuberant guy behind Meredith, that’s me. Had to play it up once I found out half way through the taping that I was getting a lot of screen time.

As much as I’d like to see prizes being given away, Millionaire is not the place to do it. They have no announcer and no set format.
One other rule change for Season 10, and probably not for the better – according to the WWTBAM.me site, the Round One consolation prize of $1,000 is gone. This means that the ‘Llama’ is back – contestants losing on any question in Round One will once again leave with nothing. Considering that some contestants used some of that money to finance their trip to NYC to be on the show, this is one change that, to me, is another example of Disney/ABC trying to rake in some extra money. We will wait and see if this affects how contestants play the game (I think there will be a lot more early Walks).
So someone lost on today’s second episode of the season, but they still got the $1,000 consolation prize, so for the moment, it’s still around. Either the WWTBAM.me site got its details mixed up, or the $1,000 gets phased out later in the season, a la Phone A Friend. We shall see.
It seems everyones trying to cash in on the millionaire theme these days – I think this format is getting a little tired now – but how to replace it? ITV in the UK have just tried withRed or Black – this big budget 50/50 chance show started to rave reviews but over the 7 night spell enthusiasm seemed to waiver somewhat. Hey ho! back to the drawing board me thinks!
