I don't believe Match Game can work without Gene Rayburn, Face it, Match Game was really The Gene Rayburn Show. If they want to try a new version. then it should be political and have a Rosie O'Donnel type host.

I don't know about any of you, but I hope it does get picked up, and, hopfully, doesn't get a lousy time slot like late at night. And I agree with MrQuiz, poor celebs (mostly stars from ABC shows) killed MG 90 not to mention (and I can't stress this enough) the lousy time slot (most ABC stations, particually on the Central and Mountain time zones air news instead). And MG '98 was awfully. Where should I start? Poor writing, Celebrities whose (with the exception of Nell Carter, may she rest in peace) 15 minutes of fame ended 14 minutes early, and, not to mention, bad host. They could've gotten a better host than Michael Berger, who, IMHO, was a horrible host on not only MG, but he was a horrible replacement for Ray Combs on Family Challenge. Now for this version, They need a host who can be the "glue" of the show. One possiblity could be Todd Newton or Frank Nicotero from "Street Smarts". But, then again, Fremantle, who's only bright spot is American Idol, is producing it.

Honestly, you could pretend to not be the "life of the party" at the audition, then be the complete opposite while the cameras are rolling.

But I agree with the rest of the peanut gallery that it's not the contestants that truly matter for MG -- it's the host, the celebrity panel and the show's writers. If MG has...

1. ...a host who keeps the show in control and interacts well with the panel (One of Michael Burger's bigger problems hosting MG 98 was that, at times, he seemed to fear a few of the panelists)
2. A panel made up of comics, actors and other celebrities who understand how to play the game, can interact well with each other, the host and the contestants, and are playing for the contestants, not themselves (think early Brett Somers)
3. A writing staff that can get back to the spirit of 70's and Shafer MG (perhaps even reach out to those who wrote for those shows for advice, or to even join the staff)
4. A production company (Fremantle) and a network (TBS) that will not overmeddle in production of the show (Reportedly, MG 98 started to fail when Pearson ordered the show to make sure the show had "more matches".)

...then the show will have a chance.

With TBS pumping up more original comedy content in the coming months, it would not surprise me that, if the show gets picked up for series, you will see actors on TBS sitcoms appearing on the panel. I could easily see Bill Engvall ("The Bill Engvall Show") doing well on this panel. Jim Gaffigan ("My Boys") would be worth a look-see, and Jordana Spiro ("My Boys") could fit the "dumb blonde" position that seemed to be a hallmark of the 70s version.

It's a longshot, but perhaps the new version could invite a popular panelist from the 70s version to sit in every week. I doubt Richard Dawson would do it, but I could see Betty White, Joyce Bulifant, Marcia Wallace, Patti Deutsch or Bill Daily to take a spin on the show if asked.

I already knew about Bert Convy passing in 1991 from his brain tumor which was why Ross was hired MrQuiz - I was merely giving a 'what if' scenario for "Match Game" had Bert lived past the pilot stage of the 1990 version of the show, but thanks for the support! As for Tom Bergeron, he was an okay host for "HS", but I'd still take John Davidson's version of the show over his, and of course the BEST version of "HS", which was led by 'the master' Peter Marshall for 15 years! One more thing MrQuiz - John's version of the show lasted for three seasons (1986-89), not two, but I also agree that his version should have lasted longer than Bergeron's! The best seasons of that version of the show were the Henry Winkler "H2" seasons - the other's were more of a display for Whoopi Goldberg's reactions to celebrity answers, and Tom was her 'hand puppet.'

I thought Tom Bergeron did a great job with Hollywood Squares. It's too bad he doesn't want to do game shows anymore, since he deserves better gigs than "America's Funniest Home Videos".

About this version of Match Game, I haven't heard anything about a host or panelists, and yet it's already casting contestants. It's not too early to start worrying, is it?

Tom Bergeron was the reason the most recent Hollywood Squares lasted as long as it did. He was every bit as good as Peter Marshall, only he did not have as good talent to work with. bergeron should be on the short list for any celebrity oriented game. He would be awesome for Match Game but it would have to be an ABC version.

DeNo1 brings up another point well taken: That was exactly the same reason the original HOLLYWOOD SQUARES worked so well. It was also the politically incorrect humor, and theose pesky (LOL) double entendres that didn't hurt. (There's at least one SQUARES tribute website; please Google it, and you'll likely see a sample of some of the questions that'd never be allowed past the censors (but isn't it funny how some body parts and functions, and other alleged forms of "shock" humor get a "pass?").

To that end, it's mamzing how the '80s version with John Davidson lasted only two seasons, while the the most recent version more than doubled that.

I agree with MrQuiz on this one - the reason that no one has been able to make a successful remake of "Match Game" has all to do with CHEMISTRY, and nothing else! The celebrities of the 70's version were a classic lot, in that even with the 'new kids on the block' brought in to mingle with Brett, Charles, and Richard, they all seemed to get along, and have fun with the game, and entertaining us at the same time. The same can be said of the original 1966-80 version of "The Hollywood Squares" when 'the master' himself, Peter Marshall was yucking it up with regulars Paul Lynde, Rose Marie, George Gobel, and many more. That era of game shows had a good and special feeling to them that the newer versions of these shows could never recapture.

I agree that Ross Shaffer did a hellva job emceeing the '90 version of the show, and had there been more appearances of the 70's celebrities (i.e. Brett Somers, Betty White, Jimmie Walker, Avery Schreiber, Marcia Wallace, etc., along with "MG" favorites Joyce Bullifant, Patti Deutsch, Scoey Mitchlll, Patty Duke, and many others), and possibly with original host Bert Convy hosting (as he was an original semi-regular on the 70's version, and seemed to have good repore with people on "Tattletales"), and a better time slot, this version might have succeeded better, but I still give Ross an 'A' for effort for what he had to work with.

At least Ross was lucky not to deal with the crap known as "Match Game '98!" That version was CHEAP to the core, and it 'dumbed down' the show from a fun cocktail party setting to see who cold get the most censored answers in 30 minutes contest! I felt sorry for Vicki Laurence for having to sit through this dreck, and I bet she kicked herself many times as well! Judy Tenuta was the Kathy Griffin of the 90's, but worse, as she wasn't a BIT funny, and that damn accordian drove you nuts after a while! Michael Burger should have stuck to talk shows, as he wasn't even Ross Shaffer on his worst day!

I hope this pilot doesn't go through, and that instead we get the repeats of the 70's thru 1990 versions of "Match Game" aired on GSN one day where they aren't sped up, and where the immortal Johnny O is finally NOT interrupted so we can hear that "Secret Storm"/"Tattletales"/"Musical Chairs"/"Love Of Life" is next, over most of these CBS stations - nuff said on this topic!

I never had a problem with the $20,000 payoff. It was incorpoarted with the "Star Wheel," which was brought in just prior to Richard Dawson's departure from the show.

I've also said this before. Other older fans of MG have said it before. When he was still among us, even Gene Rayburn said many times how weak the format was, and it was the chemistry with the stars, and the fact that he (Mr. Rayburn) was the glue that held it all together.

The reason the ABC version with Ross Schaffer didn't work was a poor mix of celeb's; mostly from ABC's own stable. Schaffer himself wasn't half bad, at all.

Evidently, nobody learned the lessons created by the most recent debacle, with the likes of Coolio, and Judy Tenuta...

I hope I am wrong, but I dont think MG can work without being in the 70s when you could hear a joke but not write down a sex-related answer. Even if the contestants and panels were given orders not to, the audience at home would be thinking the sex answers, and when they didnt come up, they would be confused. Just my guess, but I dont think this will work.

Especially not having celebs. The panel should be celebrities/comedians that are not going to be extremely controversial (As I type that sentence I think of Kathy Griffin as someone who should not be on. I know a lot of people like her and I've heard some of her bits that i thought were good, but I've seen her on The Mole, and she takes her cursing, center-of-attention attitude with her to other shows.)
