Cynopsis announced that Merv Griffin’s new game show venture, “Let’s Play Crosswords” has cleared by NBC O&O’s (owned and operated stations) in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and Dallas as part of a new deal with the show. The new deal involves NBCU Domestic Television Distribution to represent national barter advertising sales and the entities to jointly create a broadband component for the NBC stations’ web sites. As of now, it’s looking like it’ll tape in WMAQ in Chicago, but plans are still up in the air. I have to agree with past respondants that the title is pretty bland, and from the “animated” version of the game I saw, I think it needs a bit more “pep”, but, as is evident, Jeopardy is very popular and isn’t too much more “action” oriented than this show will be.
The big thing I think they need to do is to “tap” into the market of people who actually like to do crossword puzzles. Maybe some sort of cross-promoting with the NY Times and/or LA Times crosswords, which are syndicated to most newspapers, and have some promotionals around those in the papers. Otherwise, I don’t know that people will be actively “looking” for the show.

Will crosswords have a weekend run as they did for PYRAMID back from 2002-2004?
