Let’s Make A Deal: Perpetual Motion Marilyn

I know there were some sore feelings that Pyramid didn’t get picked up, and instead Let’s Make A Deal did, but it’s hard to flat out deny that Let’s Make A Deal hasn’t been a really good, really funny, really entertaining show.  It took two or three weeks to find its groove but it’s there and I’m hoping the ratings are equaling the quality of what we’re seeing.  They’ve also already provided one of the most memorable moments of 2009, and one of the most memorable game show bloopers in a very long time.  Here’s advice to all those dressing in costume for Let’s Make A Deal: make sure you are wearing proper support if you’re going to be wearing something very thin, like spandex.  You’re going to do a bit of jumping and moving around.  Marilyn didn’t realize this and ended up bringing the most hysterical moment of the series thus far.  Wayne Brady and co-host Jonathan Mangum, as well as model Alison Fiori and the camera men, handled this so perfectly it deserves special mention.  The way the entire cast and crew interacts is what’s making Deal so great.  Here’s Perpetual Motion Marilyn.

In a game show like this, you *hope* for such memorable moments. In Drew's first season of TPiR, we had Marie, the Plinko contestant who had to "go potty". He and the rest of the staff handled that situation brilliantly.

Much the same can be said here with, dare I say, this moment of jiggle television.

That's exactly what I was thinking. This is a great reminder of why I loved Game Shows in the 70's and 80's. You had trivial information, but you also had crazy, bizarre and weird things like this. It shows how well the cast are relating to each other, especially Wayne. He's comfortable with the others (The model, Jonathan, even the cameraman) sharing the limelight with him… in fact… he helps to encourage the others to join in.

I was a little disappointed when LMAD was named to the full hour, because I wanted to see Pyramid try again after the Donny Osmond series. But seeing moments like this — CBS did good.

^"Having either picked up, to me, was a "YOU WIN!" situation."

Is it okay that I thought of Patrick Wayne upon reading this part?

I was afraid of an hour too, but this shows why an hour actually makes more sense for some shows (especially ones like this) than 30 minutes does. This show would feel SO much more rushed in a half-hour format. The hour almost feel 30 minutes sometimes. It's a perfect mix. Major props to CBS, FreMantle, Wayne, Mike Richards, Las Vegas…everybody! :)

I’m with Myke25 on the whole Pyramid thing. Give it some time. Even if As the World Turns’ ratings does improve (which, if slightly, I doubt), then there are other shows that are slipping. Prime example of that is the show that’s up against ATWT, One Life To Live. The suits at ABC aren’t happy with their ratings (which is at or near the bottom of the pack) and it’s possible that 2 things will happen: 1. They will cancel it, or 2. take it off ABC’s schedule and make it exclusive to SOAPNet, then you’ll have Pyramid, either at the 1/noon hour or the 3/2 hour. But enough about that………..

I was scared of an hour long LMAD at first, but, seeing as they did a great job moving it along, well, you know. So CBS deserves the right to say “I told you so”. So kudos to the Eye.

@ Daniel: It’s ok. I’m sure there are some Buzzerbloggers that remember Tic Tac Dough ’90.

Looks like nothing is changing on CBS' daytime schedule anytime soon… I heard that they wouldn't yank ATWT so soon after GL. I think CBS can handle 3 soaps. I also heard that ATWT is likely to be renewed for that reason also.

Well then, lets put this show on ABC in 2010. It'll repeat history and make CBS the idiots. I want The $1,000,000 Pyramid on ABC cuz itll fit

You only need to play two games if you extended the pyramid to include another row of categories.

  • DeVares says:

Kevin, I doubt if they gonna fill Oprah’s spot with Pyramid or any other game show. Now that’s not to say that it couldn’t happen, but it’s likely they’re gonna make her BFF Gayle King as her replacement.

To Andrew Jordan: Pyramid would be a perfect fit for ABC if (and only if) they yank one of their soaps, likely the adformentioned OLTL, and even then they’re gonna have to shuffle the lineup in order to keep AMC and GH together.

    • Andrew Jordan says:

Thank you DeVares and In that words, would you think Pyramid have to expand to a 1hr show to fill in the time or would it get another game show? IMO, if its the latter, I'd say use a daytime format of any of ABC's failed primetime game shows. If not then how about taking the syndie Millionaire into ABC Daytime?

It could very well happen. The 4 PN hour here in Philly will never be the same come September 2011, However, I see a double run of Millionaire taking over. The 4-4:30 PM slot might be the previous season's shiw while the 4:30-5PM slot goes to the current season.

Oops, I didn't reailize you'd mention that scenerio ny friend. I'm always thinking game shows because I sure do need an afternoon game show on one of my local affiliates outside of Millionaire(WFMZ really doesn't "count" in my book with its 4 PM airing of DoND).

I too thought that an hour-long LMaD was a puzzling idea. Then, I ended up watching roughly 15 episodes of Wheel of Fortune this season — a show that's been pitifully rushed for several years and now seems emptier than ever. Thanks to all you BuzzerBloggers for reminding me why Let's is so good. I see it at 9am here and enjoy it very much. Even if it weren't, I'd still be easily entertained by it because I'm still a pile of goo on the couch that early.

@ Andrew Jordan: I would pair it with another game show. I think Millionaire works better in Syndication than ABC Daytime, at least in a financial sense. If I would use a daytime format of any ABC failed primetime game show, it would be Duel simply because it did had better ratings than Show Me the Money, National Bingo Night, and Set For Life, plus it would work better in a half hour daytime format than it did in primetime.

    • Duel was, IMHO, a good show that was badly mishandled (BOTH times ABC tried to use it). I'd like to see it bad, but don't really trust that anyone doing so (if they would even dare to try) would handle it properly.
