Jerry Springer Hosts GSN’s “Baggage”

UPDATED: Either it’s an incredible coincidence that GSN just formally announced Baggage or we pressured them into it.  Regardless I’m sure that’s another dart in the board with my face on it there.  Baggage will debut Monday, April 19th, at 6:30PM ET.  Don’t worry about Catch 21, I’m hearing it’ll be back.  Be on the lookout for another original after that.  Baggage sees three contestants with their dating “baggage” eliminated down to one, and the potential date must reveal some of his or her own baggage.

I just want to bring up one amusing point, and something I’ll be discussing a lot whenever I mention the show?  They are unbelievably adamant in casting notices that no one will be going out on a date and that you don’t have to be single.  They say it’s just a fun show about dating.  The release GSN threw together sure discusses “winning the eye of a prospective date,” though.  Is it that hard to find four single people in Los angeles each show?  So, just to reiterate and use the line that’s become popular for this show and picked up in a few places, Baggage is the non-dating dating show for non-single singles.

You can’t be sneaky and say that Jerry Springer is hosting Baggage, GSN’s new perplexing non-dating dating show for non-single singles, before flagging the Craigslist article for removal.  It’s still cached in Google.  It doesn’t hurt that Hollywood Junket brought it up also.  That’s right.  The controversial talk show host has been tapped to host the new GSN show.  As I said before, the show completely confuses me.  It’s basically a dating show, but they are very keen on saying that you don’t have to date anyone during the show.  You just have to appear.  They also say you don’t have to be single, you just have to appear to be single.  I’m not quite sure what appearing to be single means, but there you go.

More than anything it seems like a very mellow version of the MTV dating show Singled Out, but what do I know.  Baggage has been picked up for 40 episodes and has no set debut just yet.  Keep checking.  GSN needs a hit and they seem to be abandoning getting any other audiences for their originals and going solely for the middle aged women with this one.  I can’t entirely blame them given they have an awful track record without the help of some former executives who brought in Catch 21 and Newlywed Game who aren’t there anymore.  But at least they are trying to appease the classic fans and are bringing back Card Sharks and the popular new show Million Dollar Password in April.

I know the picture has nothing to do with the show, but it is Springer and makes me laugh, and that’s good enough for me.  Thanks to About: Game Shows for bringing this all up.

Just when I thought GSN have came to their senses, they proved me wrong…..again. Jerry Springer? A dating show host? Really? Roger Lodge wasn’t available? And, since Jerry Springer hosting it, so could we be seeing some lesbian transvestites on here? (Of course, at this point, you would notice the sarcasm) I see this as 40 eps and done. GSN really need to find someone who knows how to greenlight good game shows (I’m available for that job).

I'm thinking lesbian transvestites might be the lone draw. (What do lesbian transvestites wear, anyway…men's clothes?)

OK…You found the best Springer picture ever!

To the show…If Wink Martindale can't bring viewers to a show, no matter how bad it is, then how do they think Springer will bring viewers to this one? Big names do not equal viewers anymore. Plus, Springer is not the name he was even a few years ago when he hosted America's Got Talent. This show will bomb like every other show devised by this crew.

BTW- They are appeasing the classic fans and pissing them off at the same time with this Card Sharks thing. They might be added to daytime, but they are also replacing classic Family Feud and Ludden Password in the 3-4 am EST block. Really lame!

Ok when I started to read this, I was thinking this had to be some sort of a joke that GSN was trying to play on us. But this should be interesting to see how Jerry handles this one. He did well with America's Got Tallent, but we shall see in the weeks to come.

Just another GSN bomb-in-the-making. If you're confused by the premise, so am I; it's a dating show where you don't have to date? That's like having a Jeopardy-esque show without any trivia questions; it makes no sense. And Jerry's heyday has long since passed, so there's no real cache. When will GSN hire people that actually, you know, know how to develop an actual game show? It makes sense that there's been no successful originals under the current regime; everything's a flawed idea.

Jerry Springer also used to host a couple UK game shows. Greed (based on the Fox show hosted by Chuck Woolery), and Nothing but the Truth (known here in the states as The Moment of Truth), so he knows about game show controversy.

  • Marc Power says:

my guess is this may be something like the short-lived GSN original Fake-a-date where this person dates 2 people, one is available the other is not, at the end they pick one, if they pick the single one they both win a trip, if they pick the one thats already taken he/she and their significant other get the trip.

so maybe is like fake-a-date but without the date

    I have a headache!!!!!!!

  • DENo1MatchGameFan says:

And to think people have been a bitching about how bad "Love Connection" has been for all of these years!

  • IIRC Jerry wasn't half bad in Greed either, so… well, I've hoped before and have had hopes dashed, so…

Is it just me or does this show have quite a few similarities to the MTV show "Room Raiders"? One person looks through three other people's stuff to decide who to go on a date with then at the end the three people get their revenge looking at the one person's stuff.

All we're going by is stuff like this:

    http://www.realitywanted.com/call/6746-gsn-show-c

Where it says you don't have to single but just "be single", which strongly implies just appearing to be. If we're wrong, OK, but the casting notices are unbelievably misleading.

Whatever casting notice they are talking about for BAGGAGE, it is INCORRECT. The daters on GSN's new show BAGGAGE MUST BE SINGLE and if you meet your match you WIN A DATE. People who are not single CANNOT do the show.

  • Beth says:

Correction my friend. HOLLYWOOD JUNKET didn't just "bring it up," we broke the story, AND made GSN aware of it the same day. If GSN got pressure from anyone, it was from HOLLYWOOD JUNKET. That's the facts! Just check the article date.

That posting was absolutely incorrect and has been taken down. BAGGAGE is still currently casting but the daters
on the show MUST BE SINGLE and between 28-45. Again if you meet your match you win a date.
All of the current postings reflect these requirements. I heard it is going to be a hilarious new show…

Which promotions/PR company you work for again? Last time I heard that much promotion from someone this passionate it was for MTWI (also claimed to be funny) and I have yet to find that show hilarious.

It doesn't matter if Jerry Springer is on the verge of making a name for himself as a game show host. This sounds like another half-assed idea from GSN…

  • [...] GSN taps Jerry Springer to host dating game show "Baggage" is being described as a "non-dating dating show for non-single singles." [...]

  • [...] Jerry Springer has signed to do a new game show on GSN called ‘Baggage.’ It’s described as “an non-dating dating show for non-single singles,” which I think means it’s about married couples who engage in orgies. OK, maybe I’m wrong about that, but I have no idea what the set-up of the show will be. [...]
