It Finally Happened on Last Night’s “Million Dollar Money Drop”

Fox’s Million Dollar Money Drop is still airing on Tuesdays at 9:00PM (and this Thursday at 8:00PM) in case you’ve missed it.  Last night’s episode scored a 3.3/5 rating, for what it’s worth.  Some more people stuck around this Tuesday than last Tuesday’s episode, and maybe it was because of what happened in the first few minutes. Contestants Anna and Anthony had this as their first question:

“Traditionally, winners of the Indianapolis 500 drink what kind of beverage in victory lane?
A: The One Made by Anheuser-Busch
B: The One Made by Dom Perignon
C: One Made by an Atlanta Soft Drink Company
D: One Made by Cows”

The couple placed the entire million dollars on B, thinking it was champagne.  Anthony was thinking about using the Quick Change lifeline, allowing for 30 more seconds of money moving (he wanted to move a little to D), but Anna talked him out of it.  They stepped up and we saw this happen:

So if nothing else, we had two things happen.  First is we finally saw the title of the show come into play.  They built this really impressive set with the extremely nicely lit, tall, drops with security guards surrounding them.  Yet, they rarely ever show it.  They finally showed the money actually drop which was pretty interesting.  You’d figure they’d show it off a little more, but oh well.  And second, I think we’ve learned, with that question, that 1 VS 100 is the most influential quiz show to come out since Millionaire.  Lots of quiz shows, beyond Endemol ones, are using the twist writing style that made 1 VS 100 popular.

I also loved that the audience was laughing and not upset, much like me.

It was acutally nice to see the show get 8 questions in an hour, instead of seven, and the pacing has improved slighty, since they are know dropping all three drops that are wrong at once on occasion!

  • Matt says:

I’ve never had more hopes for a game show and then be disappointed as I have been with this one. I understand producers look for likable, energetic contestants, but the ones on this show so far have been more annoying than anything else. Get real people!

Also, the pace still sucks, I hope this thing gets obliterated in the ratings and someone will realize that a successful gameshow is one that continuously keeps the pace up (see Millionaire).

  • BillCullen1 says:

I knew they were wrong, and the guy bragged he was a BIG sports fan. It’s a long standing tradition that the Indy 500 winner drinks milk. When the woman said “We’re done” placing the money, I yelled at my set “Yeah, in more ways than one.”

    • Tony DuMont says:

I actually thought that was a more obscure question than the Alvin and the Chipmunks question. Of course, the Statue of Liberty question on December 23, 2010 seemed a bit too easy for the last question. I still can’t believe they lost on that answer.

  • Eric Pierce says:

EPIC! A solid, fact-based, non-survey question takes down a couple that has no business being on this show. (Really, can anyone shed some light on the test for this show? Was there even a test?)

Agree on the 1 vs. 100 writing style & agree the show is still slow. But hey, on DVR it only takes me 15 minutes to watch the whole hour!

    • Tim Connolly says:

Test? You think there was a test for this show?

When my roommate and I tried out, there were six other teams in the room, and we all given one question which we were told to talk out and answer. Just one. Oh, one more thing – we were all supposed to do it AT THE SAME TIME.

      Yeah. There’s your test.

  • SEAN says:

I gave up on this show a long time ago. Besides V is on at the same time & V is excelent.

  • Johnny says:

That scene serves as a metaphor for the whole show!

BTW, I was laughing the entire time, knowing they got it wrong because, frankly, he was an idiot for not knowing and she may have been the most obnoxious, pushy, b-word of a wife to be on the show yet! They deserved to lose it all on the first one, it seemed very fitting.

  • Newman says:

The show is up more than 35% from last week’s airing in the 18-49 demo. The show has a heartbeat. And more questions per hour, as some noticed. I am rooting for the show and enjoy it.

    • Matt says:

I tend to think that the only reason that there was ONE more question in the entire hour is because they were able to get to a finite ending. It is obvious that this show wants to end a game at the hour, so it a) remains slow and b) becomes predictable.

      • Newman says:

I think I have more faith that the producers know that what they did wasn’t working and are trying to add more questions in general. We’ll see.

  • Pat says:

I don’t watch NASCAR or any racing except for The Amazing Race, but I could of told you that they drink milk. Heck, I would of put $1,000,000 of my OWN money as well on Milk. The lady should of thought about it, drinking and driving is a really big no-no, and except for when the Texas Rangers beat the Yankees and they had Ginger Ale instead of Champange, I can’t recall anyone else drinking soda after a victory. It was a simple question that wasn’t thought through properly and it sadly cost them.

    • David Michael says:

Well, you would be wrong, many NASCAR races have the driver drinking Soda or a sports drink after the race in Victory Lane. Many races are sponsored by Soft Drink Companies, such as the Coca-Cola 600, Pepsi, Gatorade, and many other soft drinks. And yes, Budweiser and Miller also get drunk, depending on the race sponsor, and the sponsor of the driver. But, IMHO, Soft drinks is the number 1 thing drunk in NASCAR Victory Lane, followed by Sports Drinks and then Beer.

Note, the Indy 500 is not a NASCAR race, but part of the Indy Racing League series.

Formula 1 racing (International Open Car Racing) uses Champagne (Very Large Magnum Bottles) that is mostly sprayed on the drivers, staff and some spectators. (One exception is the F1 race in Saudi Arabia, where it is Sparkling Fruit Juice to respect the no alcohol policy of the country).

      • Pat says:

Alright, you got me there. I, like the lady, didn’t think it through. I knew milk only cause a buddy of mine watches NASCAR and whenever we’re hanging out, I’ll end up watching like the last 5 minutes where the winner drinks a bottle of milk. When the question came up, I remembered that, and then I figured no alcohol just cause of it being a driving sport and to set a good example, but soda I really didn’t think about only cause you really can’t picture soda being drunk after winning a championship. Yes, it is possible, but like I said, I really don’t watch NASCAR or anything racing, so I really couldn’t answer on behalf of soda. I only knew of the Texas Rangers drinking Gingel Ale after winning the division title against the Yankees because a manager or owner of the team had substance abuse problems and so they did the Ginger Ale for them. I never took in the fact that other races do have the winner drink soda or sports drinks.

        You win.

  • David Howell says:

That’s how to do the 1 vs 100 “indirect answer” question. More questions of that quality, combined with straddling games (the single best innovation Millionaire bought to the table, IMO, and no contestant-versus-house show works as well without it), and this show would have been fine from the word go. As it is, it’s surely doomed; “The Rich List” got cancelled for less after episode 1, didn’t it?

  • Alan says:

For those viewers outside the US who may not be able to watch Hulu videos in their country, the correct answer was D).

Anthony had the right idea all along. : (

    • Francis Chu says:

I reckon Anthony and Anna went home in seperate cars last night, and if they were married, I can feel a divorce coming on!

  • Michael B. says:

Actually, if you look at the video, Anthony’s pointing to A and C. They both agreed from the beginning that it wasn’t milk, so even if they HAD used the quick change they still would have lost. Plus, I agree with the others. The Indy 500 is one of the biggest “sporting” events in the country, and this guy, who’s supposed to be a big sports fan knew nothing about it. Wish I’d caught that part when it was on.

  • AP says:

I didn’t even know the show was on last night… they’ve got to work on their marketing this year… at least I knew about it all throughout December

  • Joshua says:

Then again, Endemol is responsible for both 1 vs. 100 and The Million Dollar Money Drop. So I wouldn’t be surprised if question writers from the former wrote material for the latter.

  • Ryan J. says:

The only team who celebrated with soda, orange soda, was the Washington Generals when they beat the Harlem Globetrotters by a point in 1971.

  • Vincent C. says:

I know nothing about sports so I would have split it between A & C. I DEFINITELY wouldn’t have put anything on B. Then again I wouldn’t have chosen the sports category in the first place.

P.S. Found this through Game Show Garbage.

  • Bill Reynolds says:

I was at the show & they were held in a room for 18 hours straight by the producers after flying from NY. They hadn’t slept in over 2 days. They were so exhausted we could barely get them on stage, so they were pumped with Red Bull. There is a reason the show didn’t last more than 1 season.

  • Bill Reynolds says:

BTW. The producer’s also fed the couples what to say on their intros. It’s TV people. Do u really believe they lost 1 million? Not even close. So much of what you see on TV is B.S. Manipulated by the producers.
