If you haven’t noticed, the current game show host trend is to get stars from the 80s or 90s who have faded, had some fame back then, and make them the new big thing. For the most part it’s worked out well. Really, the only people who haven’t been hired by this process are Mark Walberg and Regis Philbin, but they are both awesome so they deserve the primetime gigs. GSN’s been doing the same thing with Corbin Bernsen and Patrick Duffy, slipping further in the celebrity list. Who did they drag up from Kathy Griffin’s D List basement this time for the revivals of Dating Game and Newlywed Game? Kim Coles and Judy Gold.
I follow stand up comedy so I know Judy Gold, who is taking over Newlywed Game, from the endless Comedy Central specials. She was a writer and producer for Rosie O’Donnell’s talk show also. Kim Coles, who will be hosting Dating Game, appeared on many shows like Fraiser, Living Single, In Living Color, and Six Feet Under, which is all well and good. But she’s also done Celebrity Mole and Celebrity Fit Club which are notorious for celebrities desperately trying to get their name out there. Of course Corbin did Celebrity Mole as well, so who knows. I’m trying as hard as I can to imagine how these two will do in these roles and I just can’t come up with anything. It easily confirms that GSN understands the main audience for these shows will be women their ages (40s), so why not go for a host that’s just like the viewers? GSN said they went for unique people, and I don’t buy that. I buy going for a host that is their audience.
Edit: Fixed the shows. Had the hosts flipped around. Sorry!

This could get interesting. I am all for more equality and all. I can’t wait to see how this turns out. I like Kim Coles, but this is again an interesting choice for The Newlywed Game. I hope she gets some advice from Bob Eubanks. Vice versa for Judy Gold, I hope she gets it from Jim Lange.

Yeah, I like Kim Coles well enough, but she doesn’t seem like the right type of host for TNG. I’m not familiar with Judy Gold so I can’t vouch for her, though TDG doesn’t really call for a particular type of host. I don’t really have high expectations for these revivals, especially since I’m not much of a NG/DG fan to begin with.

GSN is aiming for the female audience, particularly the housewives, and these 2 shows have a history of attracting female audiences. So it didn’t surprise me that Kim Coles (who was funny on Living Single and In Living Color despite the fact she’s been on the latter just one season) and Judy Gold (never heard of her) were tapped to be hosts. Kudos to GSN (IMHO, Bob Eubanks is too good of a game show host to do a show on GSN).

Wait…I think you got the hosts mixed up. The Reuters article says that Kim Coles is hosting The Dating Game and Judy Gold is hosting The Newlywed Game, which makes more sense to me.

I like both of these ladies, so I’ll give the shows a shot. I hope they do well.
