FOX supplied us with a video preview of their new game show Hole in the Wall. They are putting a lot of faith into this show for some reason, though much like Moment of Truth and American Gladiators it seems to be a one trick pony. You see it do its thing once, and then who gives a shit afterwards. Anyway, what’s bugging me about the show already comes after the video.
*They are pumping a ton of drama into a show that has a sole purpose of embarrassing people.
*They are putting a big cash prize up for a show that has a sole purpose of embarrassing people.
*We get it. Fat people are funny to put into stretchy silver suits and see break a wall in half.
*The co-host, Mark Thompson, has the catch phrase, “It’s time to Face the Hole.” It sounds like a movie you’d watch on Cinemax as 2AM. He says the phrase every single time they go to the wall.
*We’ll be getting Deal or No Deal level moronic contestants apparently. At least all they have to do is make asses of themselves.
*The audience never shuts the hell up. Ever.
The list could probably go on but they gave me a short preview, more of which comes up tomorrow. Wipeout works because they make it a comedy show. Hole in the Wall wants to be a comedy show and a serious game show at the same time. Honestly, it fails at both. The only decent thing about the show is Brooke Burns who does a pretty good job.

This looks awesome, can’t wait to see it! Wipeout got a bit old after a few episodes. Big Balls were funny once, then it got repetative.

i actually mentioned all of this when i went to the taping a couple months ago…
Brooke also mentions “The Replay” way too much.
Also, the audience was required to “scream” as long as they can… I wish I was paid.

OK, let’s see if I got this straight here:
Hour-long extension of YouTube fodder gets time and money from Fox,
while 1 vs 100 gets shafted and ignored by NBC.
Hey television… What The F@&k?

I thought after seeing that Australian preview that there could be some potential but after seeing this clip it is just GOD AWFUL.
It is just so overly produced it isn’t even funny.
1. There are way too many people in the audience. In the Japanese version of the show there are fewer than a 100 and in this clips it looks like hundreds. It looks like they are trying to compete with the American Gladiators in terms of how many people they can get in to one stage. Absolutely ridiculous.
2. Everybody (especially the audience) is just trying way too hard and it comes off as fake. Mark Thompson who I love as an announcer is just forcing every word like everything that is about to happen is life or death and even worse he sounds sort of monotone about it. The contestant’s entrances just come off as cheesy and overly hyped like (once again) American Gladiators. In the Japanese version it was just about a bunch of celebrities goofing off and having fun plus they never took themselves that seriously and this comes of as American Gladiators on coke.
3. The set is just way too dark. The Japanese set was bright and goofy and this well………..American Gladiators.
4. On the positive side while the SFX are the original ones that were used in the Japanese show the music is way too dark and overtop and comes like…you know.
The whole idea of making this in to a show was sketchy at best but adding all these unnecessary production values on the show just ruins it.

while the set is a bit dark, as are most game shows these days, i thought the show was kinda funny. Seeing the big woman try to get through the wall was funny.
premiering the show on 9/11 is logical because people will naturally want to see some wacky stuff on TV to take away the thoughts of the tragic events that unfolded 7 years ago.
Something tells me the show will be fine.
Do you think it would be better suited on Nickelodeon? And they fill the moat with slime? Just an idea.

We’ll see how it goes, and THEN we’ll decide, okay?

A game that’s supposed to be silly-fun made into a ’serious’ sporting event? What I liked in the Australian preview lacked in this one…
eh, I’ll try the premiere episode, but the chances of it being better than I expect? Most likely slim…

This show looks like it’ll be funny in a way it doesn’t intend to be. It’s hilariously overproduced.
An unintentionally brilliant parody of American game shows of the mid-to-late-2000s.

This is where the BBC are using their brains. A preview clip was shown on Loose Women (the UK counterpart to The View) and the audience is only sitting on one side in the studio. The main set is done with darker lighting and giant chevrons.

The catchphrases will be “Make the shape” and “Bring on the wall”. The whole thing is done for charity (£10,000 per show) and it’s produced solely for comedy. Which is why BBC One are giving it the early evening slot before Strictly Come Dancing (around 5.45pm).
