Sorry for the lateness of updates recently. I’ve been out a lot and unless other writers write something, there’s not a ton I can do. Getting ready for a New York business trip again. Always busy.
FOX will be attempting to get a larger audience to take interest in the show that continues to baffle me, Hole in the Wall. Hole, the new show where contestants shove their bodies through holes in walls over and over and over, will be shown on September 9th at 9:35PM till 10:00PM, following the new drama Fringe.
I still just fail to see how this is going to connect with viewers. I’ve had the point made that Wipeout is in the same embarrassment business, but Wipeout has more variety. FOX and Fremantle made a game show out of a small segment in a Japanese variety show and it’s just the same thing over and over again. No variety at all except the amount of people that have to go through. It’s not even like Wipeout where some people can watch in anticipation of injury. People just fall into a pool. Big deal.
Here’s a video of the Australian version. At least they made it a celebrity show and realized it’s a bit insane to make into an actual working game show.

I predict that hole-in-the-wall will great ratings the first night but it will dwindle overtime for the obvious that it’s a one trick pony.
If you type “Japanese Game Show” in to youtube you’ll notice that most of these games are apart of variety shows. On these variety shows they do these games for a certain number of times and then they are usually off for good.
So what I think “hole-in-the-wall” should do is incorporate it self in to another show like a talk show. I think David Letterman or Ellen would be a perfect home this kind of show.
It’s a shame really I do like this game but to make it in to it’s own show is ridiculous.

I pretty much had my doubts about this show from the moment I first heard about it, but watching how the Aussies put it together made the concept seem a bit more solid, almost to the point where I (gasp!) might like it. But you’re right, it is kind of a hard trick to turn one segment into a whole show, so they’re going to have to wow me in other ways. In other words, don’t go to a commercial every time a wall is four feet from a contestant. (Sometimes I’m easy to please, but in the hardest way possible…)

I’ll most likely watch this. I think that as long as we don’t have any 2 hour specials of this, or 5 night events or whatever, it should do OK.

Isn’t it obvious that fatties will break the wall? Funny but predictable.
Seeing the preview, the show is extremely tough. It is nice to have a show where people can laugh and have a great time even though they look like an ass doing so. I’ll tune in.
