GSN officially announced the third season line up of their smash hit television show “High Stakes Poker”. The new season, set to debut on Monday, January 15th, was filmed in the South Point Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, and continues to be hosted with live play-by-play by Gabe Kaplan and A.J. Benza. As a twist also, Mr. Kaplan will take a seat at the table while one of the players will take the role of host. “High Stakes Poker”, a one of its kind poker show, forces each competitor to buy in to the game with their own cash, ranging from $100,000 to $1,000,000. Players can put more money into the game after the buy in. For instance, last season saw a dramatic loss of a $575,000 pot from Daniel Negreanu to Gus Hansen. Here is the list of players this season.
Daniel Alaei
Doyle Brunson
Eli Elezra
Sam Farha
Jennifer Harman
Erick Lindgren
Daniel Negreanu
Brad Booth
Todd Brunson
Antonio Esfandiari
Barry Greenstein
Phil Laak
Mike Matusow

The press release sounds like they’re calling this show “HSP 3.” Gotta love acronyms.
Also, more names:
Patrick Antonius, David Benyamine, Bill Chen, John D’Agostino, Chris Ferguson, Jamie Gold (2006 WSoP winner), Dan Harmetz, Phil Ivey, Victor Ramdin, Dan Shak, Illya Trincher, Brian Townsend, Paul Wasicka (2006 WSoP runner-up), and David Williams.

Yeah, I was about to post other names I saw in the promotions for HSP, including Ferguson and Gold…
Being a pretty big poker fan, I have to say I feel that HSP is one of the best Poker shows on TV, and that it deserves a substantial run, as it has separated itself from the other big poker TV shows by its being a cash game. Having only pros on the show, with their own money at stake, makes for what I feel is a very intriguing experience, as opposed to watching people try to make it through tourneys of 5000 or more.
I hope HSP runs for many years to come, GSN got this one right… :D

Every time Shawn Sheikhan loses a big pot on a two-outer on the river, Baby Jesus smiles and laughs.
I never thought I could dislike a player more than I do Mike the Mouth. But Sheikhan is easier to hate at the table than anyone I’ve ever seen…
Except maybe for Jamie Gold. I hope he loses every penny of his WSOP Main Event money to the HORDE of better players he’ll be facing.

Agreed Patrick, Sheikhan is, by far, my most HATED poker player of them all. The 2005 Main Event did it just by itself. He is nothing short of an egotistical, narcisistic, and just plain rude A**. I was so happy when he got knocked out, and when lost on NBC’s Heads up tourney…
As for Mike, LOL, I used to despise him, but he’s kinda “grown” on me. Mostly because, you can tell that he truly is a hell of a good poker player, up there with Negreanu and Ivey, but his attitude (as with so many other players) tends to get in the way. Plus, in recent months, he truly has calmed down a bit, and I don’t remember the last time I’ve seen him have a real blow up, at least, after the 2004 Main Event… :)
I don’t expect Gold will do well either. He’s not a “bad” player, persay, but he’s not exactly the most talented. He can’t pull all those “I’ll show ya what I have” “I have *this hand*” stuff on the established pros, they’ll run right over him.

HSP is just a great show, and much better than most poker shows now. It’s more “reality” show than most WPT and other tournament shows, because we get to hear much more banter and joking between the players. Even though they are playing for cash on the spot (not just trying to increase there potential winnings that they are already guaranteed like on “Final 6 or 9″ at the table tournament games), they still seem kinda more laid back (mostly because they are playing “with friends” for the most part, even if you might lose $200,000 on a hand).
I also enjoy seeing the likes of a David Grey obviously out of their element with the big boys at the table.
