GSN Turns 15 Years Old
Awww, GSN’s becoming a nice young (wo)man. The channel devoted to game shows turned 15 years old yesterday. That’s quite a milestone for a network that, to be perfectly honest, doesn’t exactly have the greatest ratings on the planet. We’re really happy to still see it around and still showing some good shows. I know there have been a lot of programming decisions we aren’t fond of recently, but we could really have nothing and we’d be worse off. We’ve gotten some incredible classic programming, and fantastic modern stuff like 1 VS 100 and Millionaire which we may not have seen ever again had it not been for them. Not to mention the fantastic originals like Lingo, Russian Roulette, and Catch 21 among others. Congratulations to them, we hope they’re around for a lot longer, and hopefully we can see some really good new fan favorites in the near future.
Here’s a look at GSN’s original look, including the original opening montage and a look at their first originals. One of them features the incredibly talented and great Marianne Curan.

We could have it worse?
I don't know, Alex… it's looking pretty bad for us fans who USED to like Game Show Network.
Seeing that montage made me long for the days when David Goldhill and Kelly Goode WEREN'T running the network into the ground by "reinventing the network" (translation: alienating hardcore game show fans on a daily basis).
"We could have nothing and we'd be worse off." I disagree with that statement. When all the game show footage I want to see ends up on YouTube (and not GSN), nothing starts sounding like a better alternative.
This 15th birthday doesn't feel like a celebration; it feels more like watching a relative slowly start to die.
I'm hoping for an eventual turnaround at GSN, but that's like hoping the Phoenix Coyotes will win the Stanley Cup this season (the odds of it happening are nearly infinitesimal, and they may not be around next season).
don't forget that we will have Discovery/Hasbro's new GSN coming up pretty soon!
Here's something I found on Youtube. This is what people saw when the network went on the air back in 1994.

Wow, this brings back memories. In 1998 or '99, I was one of the phone-in contestants on Inquizition on GSN. My nervous finger cost me the $250 prize, but it was a blast! I had completely forgotten about that until I saw the 1998/99 promo with the bouncing ball that makes the "O" in Game Show… Thanks for the reminder!

Sorry, but "watching a relative slowly start to die"? I'm sorry, but that is a piss-poor metaphor. My life will go on if GSN becomes a shell of its former self or disappears from my TV altogether. In fact, I try to catch Pyramid, and that is pretty much all I see of GSN.
They are obviously trying to do something by jockeying around the schedule, curtailing GSN Live, rolling out the BS show, and poker in the end (of the week). As a "nichecaster" they found what their ratings are, and they want to expand that into a more advertiser-friendly demographic. If (when) they fail, they will return to their center to regroup from their losses. If they happen to strike gold, we may be pleasantly surprised. For example, I though BSN had tremendous potential, but could only muster about 4 minutes of patience before I changed the channel.

Hey Alex, thanks for posting my videos from YouTube. The second is my edited original montage, but "gsn93" decided to take portions of my video and edit them together for the first video. Anyways, not that big of a deal. I agree with that that we could be worse off to not have GSN at all, so we should take what we get. All cable networks go through phases of change as the audience changes. I can't even name a network that launched and to this day is the same!
GSN (and Game Show Network) have always been a hit or miss in what's successful. Some things work (Playmania, GSN Live, Goodson-Todman shows, Press Your Luck)….Many things didn't (create your own list here). Added to the fact that the network has seen ownership (from 100% Sony to 50/50 split with Liberty Media) and leadership changes quite a number of times in 15 years.
Finally, regarding the new Hasbro/Discovery kids channel set for Fall 2010, Bob Boden, a former head of The Family Channel, Game Show Network and Fox Reality Channel, was named as Head of Reality and Game Show Development and Production. From what I can tell, he's done very well in those positions before. The only item I've seen them move forward with for the new channel is the animated "My Little Pony". Hasbro has tons of licensing for games, it will be interesting to see what they come up with.

Wow, GSN certainly doesn't FEEL that old. I thought I've been watching them "forever," it's really just a drop in the bucket,
Happy Birthday GSN!

I personally would like to see mostly classics on GSN. I love card sharks, classic chain reactions, super password, and wish they could somehow get Sale Of The Century and Scrabble. I'm not saying GSN should be all classics but mostly classics would be great. I'd like to see some classics that haven't aired before on GSN. I even think that GSN should pick up High Rollers or at least revive it with a good host. As long though as GSN doesn't start doing reality shows unless it's one based on finding the next gameshow host then I like the network. I think they do overdue Deal or no deal a bit much though even though i love the show. I wish they would bring back Tic Tac Dough and Joker's Wild again. They use to have a feast of favorites in the morning and here is what i think should be on that list ( Card sharks perry, card sharks rafety, card sharks eubanks, password, password plus, super password, tic tac dough, joker's wild, match game, match game 90, family feud dawson, family feud combs, blockbusters cullen, tattletales, wheel of fortune and jeopardy.

"Watching a relative start to die" was the only metaphor I could think of. Other options would've been:
-"Seeing your favorite store have a fire sale, knowing they'll soon be out of business."
-"Having a local coffee shop turned into a Starbucks."
-"Witnessing your favorite sports team fall from playoff potential to perennial loser in less than a season."
-"Cutting open a cake, only to find a dead skunk inside."
Regardless, I stand behind what I said earlier. The GSN I'm seeing now is a far (and increasingly distant) cry from the Game Show Network I used to love. I pretty much stopped watching the network five or six months ago, and now that they're grooming Carnie Wilson as the face of GSN (and star of her own reality show on GSN), it'll be awhile before I go back (if ever).
Every time a network uses the old "target demographic(s)" excuse, a good idea dies while a bad one takes its place (see the recent article on the fall of "The Cube" and the rise of "Perfect 10"). Given that GSN has dumped pretty much every single GT show not named "Family Feud", and haven't dug into their Sony library recently (with the lone exception of The "$25000/$100000 Pyramid"; rumor has it "Hollywood Squares" may be getting pulled soon), not to mention the fact that they're focusing all their efforts on new, original material that's sure to fail (having learned nothing from the last 13 months), and the new "Discovery/Hasbro" network can't come soon enough (unless of course it turns out to be nothing but educational kids shows).
Yeah, I can live without GSN, but the memories of the good times (from 2000-2008), coupled with the constant failures and mismanagement of the current suits in charge (let's just call them the Fools-Goldhill administration), fuel the fire that compels me to post here every time something goes astray at GSN. Now, I'm not saying I'd be any good at running the network, but surely someone out there can do a better job than Goldhill and stooges. (And where's the GSN Radio announcement celebrating the network's 15th birthday? Oh wait, it's been canceled. Never mind.)
Haven't seen any notice of this anywhere on the site.
Starting next Monday, Love Connection is gone and replaced by [cringe] Catch 21.
I am a Catch 21 fan, but let the classic fans have the 9am-2:30pm slots, and leave the modern stuff in the evening. At this rate, classic programming will be gone before we know it.
Anyways, Happy 15th, GSN. Hope the teenage rebellion days come to a rest soon. ;)

Man, to think I came across the channel by accident. Simply, Game Show Netowrk made me a game show fan, and GSN showed me that only a few good shows come around, so cherish them while they air. Uh, I mean, Love the good shows, because they could all be Camouflage…
Oh come on, it could seriously be so much worse. They could have just stuck with the reality rebranding of GSN a few years back and not changed back to game shows. We'd be completely screwed right now. I mean say what you want about what they air, but it's actually game shows now. It's not Star Search or Kenny VS Spenny.
I'm not a big fan of recent changes but we could have so much worse airing right now that what we have is fine.

Is it just me, or is that animated open for Jep! really, REALLY creepy?! The sound that machine makes is haunting! I honestly think I'm gonna have nightmares tonight!
