GSN Schedule Changes; “Deal or No Deal” and “1 VS 100″ Get Debut Dates

gsnscheduleslogoWe’ve got lots of exciting GSN schedule changes coming up for you.  First, let’s talk about the awards.  As we said before, the 2009 GSN Game Show Awards will debut on June 6th at 8:00PM ET and air through 10:30PM ET.  Rerun times are varied.  First you can watch a full rerun directly following the awards at 10:30PM ET.  A special two hour edition of the awards show, without the red carpet and winner interviews, airs on June 7th at 4:00PM ET.  Now onto the big news.

Yes, as we reported before, Deal or No Deal and 1 VS 100 will be on the GSN schedule in June.  You can see Deal or No Deal Monday through Friday at 7:00PM ET starting June 1st replacing Lingo and Pyramid.  It will rerun weekdays at 11:00PM ET replacing Lingo, Saturdays and Sundays at 2:00PM ET replacing Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, and 8:00PM ET on Saturdays replacing Family Feud.  I haven’t seen the first episodes of Deal or No Deal in ages, and those early shows were miles better than the later ones, so this is a nice change.

The one I’m most excited for, and I have a feeling a lot of you are excited for as well, is the return of 1 VS 100.  Not a lot of episodes exist but GSN scheduled it nicely.  1 VS 100, NBC’s hit quiz show, will air Saturdays and Sundays at 1:00PM ET starting on June 6th replacing Lingo, 6:00PM ET on Saturdays replacing Pyramid, and Saturdays at 2:00AM ET replacing Dog Eat Dog.  Any 1 VS 100 is such a welcome addition.

There’s some daytime shuffling here as well.   Whammy! will air weekdays at 11:00AM ET starting June 1st replacing Let’s Make A Deal which is apparently now under Fremantle’s control.  Pyramid will replace The Weakest Link at 4:00PM ET weekdays, and the syndicated version of Millionaire will air weekends at noon replacing Let’s Make A Deal.

We’re still not done, believe it or not.  Saturdays get a major redo starting June 13th.  The new show 2oQ, which hasn’t gotten any good word from literally every single person who audioned that got back to me , will debut June 13th at 8:00PM ET.  It’s an hour long show stretched to an hour and a half because of GSN’s Big Saturday Nights.  Again, the initial buzz isn’t good for the show but we never know until we see it.  The Money List which taped nearly a year ago starts the same night from 9:30PM ET to 11:00PM ET, again because of stretching for the special evening.  This is really long-awaited and I couldn’t be more excited to see it show up.  Starting Sunday June 14th, 2oQ will run for just its hour at 4:00PM ET, The Newlywed Game and Catch 21 air at 4:00PM ET, and The Money List at 5:00PM ET.  Not only that we’ve got a Father’s Day marathon of Super Password on Sunday, June 21st, from 9:00AM ET to 1:00PM ET.

I know this is a huge amount to digest so we’ve got a picture of all the changes all scheduled out for you, after the break.

So Big Saturday Night’s interactivity is large/long enough to extended the timeslots of the shows a half hour? That should be very interesting. Any scoop on that?

  • Alex Davis says:

Last I heard it may be a GSN Live type deal there, but that could have very well changed since last month.

  • Steve says:

Exciting stuff here. I’m especially looking forward to 1 vs. 100 and The Money List.

  • DENo1MatchGameFan says:

First Bill Carruthers sells “Press Your Luck” to Fremantle, and now Monty Hall has done the same to “Let’s Make A Deal?” How many more shows are Fremantle going to hijack before none of the classics are shown? They have “Scrabble”, and “$ale Of The Century” collecting dust down in Australia, and God only knows what became of “Card Sharks”, “Press Your Luck”, “Body Language”, and other classics like “Tattletales.” CBS and Barker already control airing rights to “TPIR”. so who’s gonna sabotage the airing rights to other game shows? Sony is already doing a hellva job in ‘leasing’ seasons of Dick Clark’s “Pyramid” (and at the same time, ‘losing’ episodes of “The $25,000 Pyramid” that were originally aired on CBS and the USA Network.) What bogus deals will be coming up in the future? The plot thickens…

  • Tyshaun says:

The Whammy! move pretty much confirms what I’ve heard……. GSN lost the rights to PYL.

  • Julia says:

Well, the pick up of DonD and 1vs100 is good for both those shows as well as GSN. Looking at the ratings, CNBC gets worse ratings than GSN, day and prime. Granted, that doesn’t factor in all the businesses that play CNBC during the day, but those ratings don’t factor in to either of these shows.

But, have you noticed that GSN decided not to up the contracts of any Fremantle owned shows beyond Whammy!, any Family Feud, Match Game 70′s and any Password? Fremantle threw in the color eps of the original Password for the 3:30 AM slot in the absence of Card Sharks, Now You See It, The All New Beat the Clock, PYL, What’s My Line?, The Name’s the Same and To Tell the Truth. I don’t know if that is so GSN can save some money so they canthrow more money into original programming, or if it’s because Fremantle didn’t want GSN to have those shows anymore. No matter…I don’t hear too many people complaining about the lack of variety, since they added Hollywood Squares and Dick Clark Pyramid back to the schedule and are severely upping their slate of original programming.

  • Seth says:

I yearn for the days when the $20,000 Pyramid and the $10,000 Pyramid aired on GSN. When are they going to actually show programs that people really want to watch? There’s a reason primetime DOND and 1vs100 didn’t make it on NBC (and that was .. after the million was won .. who cared anymore?). What makes them think that these will do well on GSN? The 80s Pyramids are much too overplayed, Whammy is sooo overplayed that the tapes are about to break (although I like MG, I feel the same about those tapes too).I think we should look for another schedule shift in September. Price is Right is a dead conversation. I’m glad PYL is gone; that show has run more seasons in reruns on GSN and USA than it ran on CBS in first run.

I’m sorry they got rid of Perry’s Card Sharks, though. I would love to see the Garry Moore and Robin Ward TTTT’s (instead of that GS host wanna be John O’Hurley). Bring back the Chuck Barris shows. If the run of Whew! exists that should air. If ever there was a great game show that didn’t make it, Whew! was it.

  • Ghost of GSN's past says:

I seriously doubt that Fremantle is refusing to let GSN air more shows…more likely GSN renegotiated a smaller contract (with a smaller cache of their shows) and decided to use the money left over for their (Sony) own product, as well as new original programming, and not to mention their two big pickups which they’re figuring on getting more ratings mileage out of.

  • DeVares says:

This is huge. DoND and 1vs100 on GSN? There is a God (not that I doubt it). Maybe Endemol will allow GSN to air new episodes of them both, particually the latter.

To Seth: I agree. Whew was a good game show gone before its time. All of the episodes exists. CBS didn’t wipe their shows (with the exception of the short-lived 1975 game show Musical Chairs which was hosted by Larry Wade, the first African American game show host), so it could be possible that GSN could air them in the future.

To Julia: I’ve noticed it too, that’s because those shows are under a separate contract, sort of like the Dawson comeback version of Family Feud had during GSN’s Dark Period.

  • TJ says:

It’s good they are making some changes. I can’t believe that GSN isn’t listening at all to the fans who are furious about them dropping the late-night/early morning showing of “What’s My Line?” People have been calling and e-mailing the station, as well as posts on IMDB, GSN’s forums, Youtube…etc. I can’t see why they feel like they should program yet another showing of “Family Feud” instead of keeping a lot of devoted GSN fans happy.

  • MikeSant318 says:

Seth: How do you feel about Whew! as a candidate for revival for CBS daytime?
Just take away the $25,000 cap that CBS had active in the 70′s, install a 10-win limit, perhaps, and nothing else needs to be changed…

  • insaneben says:

Oh boy. Here we go again.
It’s been nearly four years since Game Show Network jumped the shark with its’ GSN re-branding, and their decline still has yet to hit rock bottom.
While I’m glad to see 1 vs. 100, I’d trade it (and a whole bunch of other ’00 “classics”) for any of those other shows mentioned by DENo1MatchGameFan and others currently being hoarded by the morons at Fremantle Media.
Since we’re on the subject of shows aired on CBS, why not have a weekly run of “Winning Lines”?
I also notice that GSN is running out of ideas for its schedule. (To whomever’s in charge of programming: you seriously think that 90 minutes of the globally-panned “20 Qs” is going to save your network? Seriously, how long have you been working for GSN? Does your knowledge of gameshows actually extend past 1999? When did GSN stop airing classic game shows and start throwing in failure filler? I think it’s time for you to hand over the keys to someone who ACTUALLY knows what they’re doing and can bring in loyal viewers instead of alienating them.)

  • Julia says:

Insaneben…I don’t know what you’re talking about. I am a loyal fan of GSN, and I actually watch it MORE than I did before. Their original programming is great. I would rather see some sort of variety with their schedule now, but I’ll survive if we get good originals like Catch 21…I won’t place judgment on 20Q until I see it. They are still airing classic game shows. have you watched the network at any time before 3 PM and after midnight EST?

  • Propagandhi says:

Where will I turn to get my daily Chuck fix?

  • Seth says:

    Hi Mike:

I thikn that Whew! would be a great revival for CBS daytime. Only one problem … there aren’t any good people who could produce that show that would give it the TLC it deserves. Whew! is a very fast paced show, and the problem with shows nowadays is that the are fairly slow-moving. The focus is on the drama of the moment, and Whew! is about as fast paced as it gets besides Jeopardy!. In order for this to be done right, production staffs have to know the value of a fast-paced game show; and even though the rounds and bonuses are timed, what goes on in-between has to move fast as well. Plus who the hell is going to host this show?

I thnk the idea of the bonus round is a good one, but I would even go further and say use a jackpot: start the pot at $25,000, and go up 5G until it is won. Once is it won, the contestant retires. But overall, I don’t think an update for Whew! would survive for long, if at all.

  • Pierre Kelly says:

First, PYL, then LMAD, now this? Where’s Cram? Where’s Hot Potato? Where’s Bullseye? GSN needs them now!!!!

  • Seth says:

People keep talking about the two Pyramids and a couple of the additions, but few people seem to realize what GSN’s given up to get there:

From June 2008 to June 2009, the following shows have or will have left GSN (recalled through the archiving of all those handy schedule PDFs):
    Love Connection
    Blockbusters (Cullen)
    Blockbusters (Rafferty) (appeared *and* disappeared)
    Tic Tac Dough
    Let’s Make a Deal (1970s version)
Let’s Make a Deal (1980s version) (appeared *and* disappeared)
    Press Your Luck
    Card Sharks (Perry)
    Card Sharks (Rafferty)
    What’s My Line (CBS)
    I’ve Got a Secret (CBS)
    To Tell the Truth (Collyer)
    To Tell the Truth (O’Hurley)
    Now You See It
    Trivia Trap
    Child’s Play
    Beat the Clock (Hall)
    Body Language
    Double Dare (Trebek)
    Russian Roulette
    Friend or Foe
That’s the Question (appeared *and* disappeared)
    Bingo America
    Camouflage
    Twenty One
    Greed
    Weakest Link (NBC)
    Weakest Link (Syndicated)
    Dog Eat Dog.

Every series listed above aired on the GSN regular schedule at some point in the last year but is gone now. The overwhelming majority were on the June 2008 schedule, while a few (Rafferty BB, TTQ, 80s LMAD) both came *and* went. And the disappearances list doesn’t even include titles that were leased but not aired (three different versions of To Tell the Truth (70s, 80, 90), Tattletales, etc.
    ————-
Meanwhile, from June 2008 to June 2009 the following shows have been added to the schedule:
    Family Feud (Combs Syndicated)
    $25,000 Pyramid
    $100,000 Pyramid
    Family Feud (Dawson Syndicated)
    Match Game PM
    Password (60s Daytime Color)
    Bergeron HS
    Catch 21,
    Newlywed Game 09
    Millionaire (Syndicated)
    Deal or No Deal (NBC)
    1 vs. 100
    Rich List/Money List
    20Q

To me, that doesn’t even come *close* to being an equitable tradeoff. And it’s not like there’s not room – more and more series per schedule are getting same-day reruns. The ratings decline, which has really picked up in the last month, tells the tale. Viewers do NOT like the changing direction of the network.

  • Seth (now Seth D.) says:

One note of mention …for the Seth that made the post above with the list of shows, please make sure that you add your last initial to the post. The post about yearning for the pyramid days and the analysis of Whew were my posts (so as not to confuse anyone now I will add my last initial D. to my posts).

Now to the above Seth’s comment on the fast change of the GSN schedule.. I agree with you. It makes GSN seem like they really don’t have a handle on what their audience likes to watch or doesn’t. GSN seems to be in a rubberband stretching trap between the shows THEY WANT you to watch beause they claim they appeal to a younger crowd; and the shows WE want to watch that we all grew up with. Unfortunately, the shows that WE want to see on GSN (TPIR, Name That Tune, $25,000 Pyramid Cullen, Treasure Hunt to name a few) all have problems with licensing or rights issues that keep them from being aired again. Also, the shows that WE want to watch have viewers in the older demographic which traditionally is the age of game show viewers, and advertisers don’t like going for older audiences.

Unfortunately, most of the shows I WANT to watch come from the 1970′s and from ABC and NBC, most of which ewre destroyed and now gone.

  • Sean says:

Well, unlike the addition of classic Pyramid (which were both runs I haven’t seen, having become a regular GSN watcher in Dec. 2007) and classic Password (have never seen before the DVD set and now), this schedule change leaves me with a big…meh.

I like the 30-minute version of DoND alright, but have never seen the 1-hour version. I have heard that it is more drawn-out and not as good, but is that true of the early runs? 1 vs. 100 I might check out too, but honestly, I prefer the classics (and I’m 24!) The originals I’m also very blah on…probably won’t watch them at all.

I had never really watched Let’s Make a Deal except in passing, but when I heard it was leaving, I watched a full episode for the first time today and liked it. Sad to be seeing it go too, and replaced by the boring and dull Whammy.

Yeah…I’d love to see the stuff that (from what I’ve read) is tangled in legal knots (TPiR Both Barker and Kennedy, Scrabble, Classic Concentration, Cullen Pyramid) and I’d also LOVE to see retro Jeopardy (1980s) and jump for Shopping-era Wheel (But be satisfied with another Trilon-era season).

At least Classic Pyramid, Password(s), and Match Game are still around. At the moment, that’s all I regularly watch on GSN (+ now Let’s Make a Deal through June 1st).

  • Seth D. says:

It’s quite funny to see Sean talk about the CBS Pyramids as “classic”, and the 80s version of Jeopardy! as “retro”. There are a lot of young people calling the John Davidson version of the Hollywood Squares “classic”, and one even called it “the original”. I also know a lot of younger people who call the Barker version of Price “the original”, not knowing abut the Bill Cullen version from the 50s and 60s. Not that Sean is wrong, it’s just how he and many others of his age group see that version of Pyramid that have never seen or heard of the 70s version.

Sean, what are the legal issues surrounding Scrabble that it will never air on GSN? Are they the same as Concentration (that NBC won’t allow it)?

  • DENo1MatchGameFan says:

The reason that “Scrabble” and “$ale Of The Century” aren’t airing on GSN has nothing to do with NBC – it has to do with the high rates that FremantleMedia (who bought out Reg Grundy Productions) are asking to air those shows. Until GSN get the ‘big bucks’ for them, they are staying put in their vaults in Australia.

  • Seth D. says:

    Thanks DENo1!

  • DeVares says:

I’m with you, Seth D. There are lots of ’70s game shows on ABC and NBC I want to see which are:

    ABC’s Password
    Showoffs
You Don’t Say (both the NBC and ABC versions)
    The Better Sex
    The Magnificant Marble Machine
    Three on a Match
Second Chance (aka the original Press Your Luck)

Too bad they wipe these shows because of the expensive cost of videotapes back then.
Also, to reinterate DeNo1MatchGameFan, NBC has nothing to do with GSN not airing Scabble or Sale of the Century because both of them have aired on USA in the ’90s.

  • JANICE SCHROEDER says:

I HAVE THE FORT WORTH STAR TELEGRAM TELEVISION GUIDE IN FRONT OF ME, AND
I WAS LOOKING FORWARD IN WATCHING “1 VS. 100″ AT 9:00 PM CST, AND IT IS NOT ON,
BUT RATHER A VERY STUPID SHOW SORT OF LIKE LATE NIGHT LIARS WITH THOSE
STUPID DOLLS. WHY DO YOU DO THIS TO US. ALSO WHY DO YOU NEVER ANSWER ME.
I LEFT YOU A COMPLAINT ONE MONTH AGO.

  • Josh says:

I can come up with a better GSN schedule than what they got now and if you want to see it, then let me know. As for Sale Of The Century and Scrabble, what’s [Reg]Grundy planning on doing with the tapes of those anyway?

  • michael says:

I am upset that Deal and 1 vs 100 are now on GSN because that most likely means no more new episodes of either show
