GSN’s picked up Show Me the Money the “hit” show hosted by William Shatner. The show will be rerun to death Tuesdays at 8/7c starting June 12, with two never-before-seen episodes on July 17 and 24. There are seven episodes total. On Show Me the Money, contestants had to answer trivia questions of various difficulty. After answering, they must pick one of thirteen scrolls. A right answer added the money, up to $250,000, to their bank with a wrong answer subtracting it. If the player gets the Killer Card, the player’s money is at risk as the next answer must be answered correctly or it’s game over. The show started out relatively strong with a 7.3 but eventually fell to a 4.4/7.
I have to say, after I have been exposed to Bingo Night, I’ll gladly watch this any day of the week over that. At least there’s a tiny bit more gameplay than pressing a button after making a 50/50 decision with nothing at stake. At least there’s also a tiny bit of brain involved. I suppose this means the rest of the players have to be paid now, doesn’t it?

Those dancing girls were HOT! Boy, could they dance! I tried doing all the steps they did (including the clapping). I’d love to see this show on GSN, maybe as a revival. Heck, let’s get Bruce Forsyth to do the GSN revival. He could really bust a move during “Hot Streak”.

IIRC, the show’s ABC run ended with a contestant in the middle of a game. At least he will get a check for his troubles.

I have one word for this, Why?. The show was bad enough the first time around now GSN’s showing it?, Thank goodness for Digital Cable, where there’s about a billion other channels to watch.

The thing is, the contestant on the last show had a bank of $650,000! And he’s only two correct answers away from winning! I have to know how that game turned out!

So, the game will pick up right where it started. The champion on the final episode of “Scrabble” came back for the ‘93 revival. Ken Jennings came back for the season premiere. Those dancing girls are still HOT and Bruce Forsyth would make a great host.

So…GSN bought the rights to air *4* (5?) episodes of SMTM?
I wonder if GSN is using them as a “pilot” to do their own version of SMTM? A few tweaks, tighten up game play…you might have a decent cable show there.

Especially if you have Bruce Forsyth (although Shatner would do fine here, or even Chuck Barris) and 13 HOT dancing girls! I’d watch just for the dancing girls!

Forget Forsyth!! This is a job for…. ARSENIOOOOOOOOOO HALL!!

I agree with Alex on this one… After Bingo night…
I thought SMTM was not THAT bad. It did take some brains to play the game… If it was not so “showy” (not sure of the right word to use) and nothing but dancing, I think it would have been a great show.
Of course (super) millionaire tops everything.

GSN should have bought “The Rich List”! SMTM is lame. The Rich List at least was a really cool idea for an innovative game show.

Not going to happen Corbin, The Rich List was for a different time, when Go worked, neither of which would play today unfortately as ppl want faster play and less detailed rules/play, reason why games like “The Rich List” wont work now-a-days, even though I didnt think it was that bad.

And what exactly is wrong with Forsyth? We have to welcome back the greats from overseas. Forsyth made a big impact both here and in the UK. Besides, ARSENIOOOOOOOOOO had his chance with “Star Search”.

If this isn’t an extended pilot for a slimmed-down (and cheaper) version of SMTM on GSN, then I can’t see what GSN gets out of it.
Well, they are doing business with Disney for other projects, so this could be a “favor” that allows the unaired episodes to burn off — and thus gets the remaining contestants paid off without a lawsuit…

Well, maybe GSN will pick up all of ABC’s failed shows. Some of them were meant for cable. But it makes me glad “American Gladiators” is on ESPN Classic (no credit-crunching).

BTW, you still haven’t told me what was wrong with Forsyth.

1.These days Forsyth is too old, that won’t play well to advertisers in America’s 18-49 demographic.
2.Bruce had his chance to shine with Hot Streak (back in the ’80s) which bombed badly (only lasting 65 shows or so.)
3. You can’t put your name in the title- when the audience doesn’t know/care who U are. Unless you’re doing something truly innovate (e.g. Win Ben Stein’s Money.)
Greg
19May 22nd, 2007 at 9:12 pm
1. You’ve got a good point.
2. You’ve got another good point.
3. Do you really think Bruce Forsyth is going to put his name in this show? “Bruce Forsyth’s Show Me The Money” doesn’t sound too good.
Well, maybe Arsenio would be a good choice after all. Either him or Chuck. It wasn’t like Shatner was a good choice for 18-49 anyway.

It had more of a game than Bingo Night, true, but to be brutally honest, this was one of the most disgustingly bad shows I’ve ever seen. The game was horrible—even Shatner himself admitted that it was poor, owing in particular to the fact that players could not walk away—and the only real point it had was to show off the sleazy dancers.

So they’re going to repeat the same 7 episodes over and over again? That’s stupid.
Greg

OK, maybe Forsyth could do the British version. How about some of these guys for the GSN revival?
Chuck Woolery
Bob Eubanks
Ross Shafer
Tom Bergeron
Michael Burger
Mark Addy
Wayne Newton
Ryan Seacrest
Tom Cruise

Maybe Vernon Kay could come to the US to do this show. He looks like a kind of guy that can appreciate this Vegas-style show.

Perhaps they could have another campy actor from the 60’s with a cult following host. Adam West anyone?
Greg
25May 23rd, 2007 at 9:35 am
Yeah, Adam West might work. The host of this show has to be:
1. campy enough to appreciate 13 attractive dancing girls
2. a good dancer
3. a good host
4. friendly and personable
Bob Eubanks is my new best bet.

I found off that Comcast- Cherry-Hill/Burlington NJ just took off GSN off their digital cable system. I found out as of this writing that it’s still on the basic cable in that area but it probably will be taken off as well What gives? I know GSN hasn’t been good for years but I still watch the classics, so what the heck is going on? Does anybody who lives in this Comcast area know that was coming?

I just found out that GSN did not leave my cable system but instead it went to channel 171. Which means it will disappear from basic cable. Too bad.

A few months ago our cable provider (Rogers) announced they would no longer offer GSN on basic cable and that it would be a digital cable exclusive. They would be replacing it with BBC World News (??!). However, on the “cut-off” day GSN moved from channel 43 to 58. and we’re still getting it. Bizarrely, they do not publicize it in the package.

Well, I’m definitely gonna be watching this. You’ll also notice that Julianne Hough, the pro who won season 4 of Dancing with the Stars (with Apolo Anton Ono), was one of the Million Dollar Dancers.

What’s wrong with Forsyth? Besides Forsyth possibly not wanting to fly overseas to host a retread show on a second-rate cable network and Forsyth being in his late 70s?
Greg, your list of potential hosts goes from plausible at the top all the way to flat out stupid at the bottom of the list.
I see this as a play for GSN to acquire another Endemol show…Deal or No Deal, maybe? Like heck it’ll be Big Brother.
Greg
33May 24th, 2007 at 7:24 am
You are probably right about Forsyth. I still think my top choices now would either be Chuck Woolery, Bob Eubanks, or Ross Shafer. We might as well forget about our British friend.
If GSN acquired DoND, it would be a disaster. GSN should just stick with the classics.
Greg
34May 24th, 2007 at 9:32 am
Then again, how old was Shatner when he did the show? If GSN is such a 2nd-rate cable network, then why is Chuck Woolery (a supposed game show legend) still hosting Lingo on the very same network?
GSN should stick with the classics.

GSN started with the classics and should continue with the classics. Bring back TJW, TTD, or something decent like that! Move “Identity” to a network where it really doesn’t matter (A&E).

Greg, you’ve confirmed you don’t know what you’re talking about. If GSN got Deal or No Deal, it would be a superb acquisition. At the present time, I’d say it’s not going to GSN since it has helped CNBC’s ratings over the past year or so. Then again, CNBC had a show with a 0.0 rating in recent memory–John McEnroe’s talk show. Even if Deal had a 0.1 rating, it’s an infinite percentage increase compared to 0.0! :-D

“Show Me The Money” was a flop for a number of reasons.
1) The dancing girls. Most guys wanting skin are gonna rent X-rated movies, not tune in a trivia game show. The models on “Deal Or No Deal” are appealing, but they don’t overshadow the game. The producers clearly thought the dancing girls would be a huge draw.
2) William Shatner’s too stiff. He’s very funny in his self-mocking Priceline.com ads but that’s about it. He’s not as able to think on his feet as Howie Mandell, a comedian. Shatner moderated the game, but he wasn’t very likable in the role of host. Again, the producers misunderstood what they thought would work.
3) Not enough “dangers”. On “Deal Or No Deal”, a contestant can mistakenly eliminate six briefcases with values ranging from $100,000 to $1 million. That’s a lot of tension! The “Killer Card” on “Show Me The Money” was relatively boring with only one bad choice out of 13. The “keep away” premise makes better sense in bonus games (think of “The Joker’s Wild” and their “Face The Devil” game) but as a main premise it’s not exciting enough.
4) Producers thought “Show Me The Money” would become the next great catch phrase and conversation starter. Puh-leeze. Anyone see “Jerry Maguire”? THAT’S when the phrase was big.
5) No loved ones on stage. “Deal Or No Deal” takes on an emotional element when a player’s friends and loved ones are brought on stage with him/her. With “Show Me The Money”, you occasionally got a camera shot of the loved ones in the audience … hardly the same immediacy, hardly the same drama.
Another poster said that “American Idol” was the sole reason this show got crushed. Hardly. “Idol” crushed anything in its path. “Show Me The Money” would have been a weak offering no matter when ABC ran it. That the producers and the network unloaded it after only seven episodes shows they miscalculated … way.
Cheers,
Charles
