GSN Plans Christmas and New Year’s Marathons

Posted by Alex Davis On November - 22 - 2009

gsnscheduleslogoGSN has two upcoming marathons for those of you two are classic fans and people who like the newer shows.  We’ll start with Christmas.  On December 24th GSN will be showing a marathon of the Ray Combs edition of Family Feud 9:00AM ET to 6:00PM ET.  Episodes will consist of a Winner Takes All tournament as well as several Christmas themed special editions.  On Christmas Day you can see a Richard Dawson marathon of Feud.  It’ll go on from the same times; 9:00AM ET to 6:00PM ET.  The first two episodes are definitely Christmas themed.  The rest don’t have any special labels so I’m not sure.  Some of you are great at reading the PDF schedules so I’m sure you can decipher it.

The New Year 2010 marathons are a bit bizarre.  The entire week of December 28th will feature a marathon of different shows each weekday.  Classic fans will be happy on Monday.  The first marathon on the 28th will be the Gene Rayburn edition of Match Game from 9:00AM ET until 3:00PM ET.  After that you all get to pissed off as classics completely disappear from the network until around 2:00AM ET.  Tuesday the 29th has a Deal or No Deal marathon from 9:00AM ET to 3:00PM ET.  Wednesday the 30th is the Richard Karn edition of Family Feud.  Thursday the 31st is a 1 VS 100 marathon so there’s some good news.  Then on Friday, January 1st, is a marathon of the John O’Hurley edition of Family Feud.  So just to point this out: in the course of the Christmas week and New Year week period, there will be 64 hours of Family Feud out of a potential 266 hours.  That’s 24% of the schedule for two weeks containing Family Feud.  Nearly a quarter of it.  Just sayin’.

Not to mention Deal or No Deal is getting something like a two day marathon over Thanksgiving, so we’re getting a ton of the shows run over and over and over.  And while on one hand I agree with people who still watch the network that it sucks, from a business standpoint you can’t fully blame them.  Run the shows that get the highest ratings over the Holidays.  No reason to commit suicide during those periods.  We’ll see if anything happens with it.

  1. Queue Three Said,

Honestly, I don't even know what to think about this. It's almost like GSN is self-destructing. It makes sense to run all the highest-rated programming – probably more-so than just keeping their normal schedule, at least – but this doesn't seem like the best pick for a marathon at all. They already abuse Family Feud enough, I don't need another 64 hours of it. Couldn't they dust off some random ancient from their library that they haven't played for a while? That would be a damn nice Christmas present, actually getting to see something different for a change.

No Dick Clark on New Year's Eve? It's Nice that Match Game gets Monday, but why doesn't Dick Clark get a marathon? I'll pass on the last four marathons.

  4. Pat Said,

I remember getting the marathons of the vintage game shows, but it was like The New Treasure Hunt, Tic Tac Dough, Joker's Wild, Dollar a Second (what ever that was lol), among others. Can't we get a few marathons a year of those old shows? I liked those marathons. The recent marathons of just 1 show aren't doing it for me.

  8. Craiggers Said,

Yeah. I'd have to agree with you there.
They still have the rights to both $25,000 and $100,000 Pyramids. Why not show that on New Year's Eve or something?
And I'd prefer a "Hollywood Squares" marathon, rather than going through more episodes of "Deal" during the daytime.

Then again, Bergeron's "Squares" might be a little too risque for 10am…

  10. Kevin Said,

I just looked at the links to the last few years of GSN's Christmas marathons and all I have to say about this marathon is SIGH…I may watch "Match Game" and probably definitely Ray Combs edition (which I always feel like gets the rough end of the stick as opposed to the other 3 version), which is always nice to watch, although I think we've seen these episodes time and time again. Besides that, it's just a big sigh to me.

"Deal" for Thanksgiving AND New Year's? TOO MUCH!

Even if they didn't revive some of the shows they haven't shown in a while ("The Joker's Wild" or "Tic Tac", for example), a marathon of shows already airing ("Password", "Wheel", "Hollywood Squares/H2", "Whammy!") would still be better than this crap! The self-destruction of GSN as Queue Three calls it really does seem to be true…

    SIGH…

  24. Pat Said,

I was just on Wiki, and I don't know if its true or not, but on the 28th of November, GSN is getting rid of ALL versions of Password. Now I rarely watch GSN except for Password, Match Game, and some other shows on rare occasions on GSN. But now GSN is like Nick, they get rid of all the good shows for like 8 hours of repeats. When Password(s) leave the air, whats the time slot gonna be filled with?…………… Think Like A Cat? :-S

But yeah, speaking of the marathons, I'm not watching. It went from "Feast of Favorites" to "Feast of 1 Show For 24 Hours". Can we please get back the show that were on back when the channel started back in '94? Bring those back for the marathons. That will be a really good change from whats on now. And who thinks, maybe one of the old shows will be a hit during the block that they bring it back for the 2010 schedule, but as a new series.

  26. Myke25 Said,

Do we really need to have a "Family Feud" network? If GSN can't afford to show more than a handful of shows, just fold already and see if Hasbro will pick up some of the favorites. I realize that Fremantle isn't exactly making the classics affordable, but Jeezus! Either "get in the game" or get OUT already!

And no Dick Clark Pyramid marathon on New Years…on a network co-owned by the company that owns the rights to most of the versions produced?! That's not just wrong…that's SAD!

  28. Xavier Said,

I'm kind of surprised this was not mentioned in a post here on Buzzerblog, but yes, GSN will be getting rid of all versions of Password. Yesterday was the last time they will air Password Plus and Super Password. On December 7th, B&W Password will be replaced with B&W I've Got A Secret. And to add to that pain, this will be the new Weekend Schedule:

    9:00am: Hollywood Squares (Bergeron)
    9:30am: Whammy!
    10:00am: Chain Reaction (Lane)
    10:30am: Family Feud (John O'Hurley)
    11:00am: Newlywed Game (Wilson)
    11:30am: Catch 21
    12:00pm: 1 vs. 100
    1:00pm: Deal or No Deal
    2:00pm: Deal or No Deal

    Weekends Only:
    3:00AM: Catch 21
    3:30AM: Millionaire (Vieria)

I just read what you wrote and got hit with a bad stomach ache. Its Nickelodeon all over again. They take away the good shows, get rid of this and that, add a bunch of nonsense and within a 24 hours day we get 8 hours of 1 show. O joy

I doubt Password will be gone for good. Look at Pyramid. "The $25,000 Pyramid" was gone for YEARS…and, it came back. Same with Card Sharks. I'm sure it'll rotate.

As for the marathons, I agree with the previous posts…they HAVE to bring back classics. The Feast of Favorites was something I looked forward to every year. So, seeing marathons of recent stuff is extremely disappointing.
