GSN Officially Announces “Newlywed Game” for 40 Episodes

Our “rumors” were true: GSN has now officially picked up a revival of Newlywed Game from Michael Davies and his Embassy Row company.  GSN ordered 40 episodes of the new edition which will tape in February (we’ll be in the studio for it) and will air sometime in Spring 2009.  Davies says the show will be a natural update:

“Marriage has changed over the years — what couples talk about, what they fight about. So there will be a lot of updating just by the fact of our casting. In doing presentations, it’s become clear to us that wives today are far more vocal than in the previous episodes. There’s just a lot of guys looking concerned that they’re about to get in trouble — and usually they do. It’s thoroughly entertaining.”

No word on the host or prize yet, but they are going ahead with a bonus round idea from the pilot involving what they call “Goldyweds”, or couples who appeared on the original version.  Again, no host has been announced yet but I’m really hoping this is the one show where we don’t go for the youngest, most youthful, and good looking host and go for someone who deserves the show, like Bob Eubanks.  It’s his show and it always has been.  I can’t imagine anyone else doing it.  Also as we announced a few months ago, Dating Game has not been picked up.

Keep looking here and on GSN for word on the host and further information.  We’ll be on the set in February giving you the behind the scenes information.  But in the meantime, who do you think should be the host of this new edition of Newlywed Game?

Didn’t Judy Gold host the Pilot? How about her? She’d work.

  • Chriscarrion says:

BOB EUBANKS, BOB EUBANKS, BOB EUBANKS.

I really can’t stand him, but who else could you honestly, with a straight face, give this show to?

  • Keith says:

It’s Bob Eubanks show, I’d like to see him hosting again. I hope GSN reads this.

  • Nate says:

Its great to see that show back again. By the way has anyone heard any word on this Match Game revival for TBS? I know they shot a pilot in July but havent heard anything since then.

  • insaneben says:

    To Chriscarrion:

    Jim Lange!
Wait… they already tried that, didn’t they?
    What about Brad Sherwood?
    No?
Chuck Woolery? Nah- after “Think Like A Cat”, it may be awhile before he gets another crack at a hosting gig.
Very well, then. Make it Bob Eubanks.

  • Pinwiz says:

Judy Gold. Judy Gold Judy Gold Judy Gold.

  • Nick says:

Give it to Bob. The Newlywed Game and Bob Eubanks are completely synonymous, and while the man is able to do it, why not

He was phenomenal at the helm of that show, and as someone who works in the industry, and has a sincere appreciation for the greats– the last thing I would like to see is another stand up comic trying to do a job that was once done better.

Simply stated, Eubanks hosting would create a reason for me and many many others to watch it.

  • James D. says:

Given the fact that no host was announced, I have a feeling GSN may have taken a pass on Judy Gold. Either that, or Gold was not available for the planned tape dates.

It wouldn’t hurt for GSN and Michael Davies to get in contact with Bob Eubanks about playing some sort of role with the revival. Tapping him as the host would get some media attention for the show and the network. If they go another direction for host, perhaps he could play a role in the planned “Goldyweds” bonus game, serve as an advisor for the program, or at least film a commercial promoting the show. From what we’ve seen, Davies seems to have great respect for the genre, so I could see him at least talking to Eubanks about the show.

  • Mike B. says:

How about George Gray? Or maybe Bil Dywer.

  • MrQuiz says:

How ’bout Eubanks? Say what you want for other choices, but with so few emcee’ing “legends” or “hall-of-famers” left, it’d be good for the show, not to mention credibility. Even though I was never a big (or little, for that matter) fan of this show, I feel that it’s time for the pendulum to start swinging away from no-name comics, and flyweight cable hosts, and back to some TV personalities with gravitas. Bob Eubanks is case in point.

  • DeVares says:

It really doesn’t matter who host as long as the show’s coming back.

To Nate: I heard from a TBS exec that they didn’t pick the show up, but Fremantle is attempting to shop it elsewhere. So it is possible that it will show up somewhere, possibly syndication.

  • Todd says:

If not Bob, then Chuck Woolery.

  • Jay says:

I agree with Todd…Bob Eubanks has been the host of this show for years…it’s his baby! Also, Chuck Woolery did a GREAT job with The Dating Game (back in the 90′s), so why not him?

As for that cat show, I do not blame Chuck Woolery at all…that show would’ve tanked no matter who was at the helm…he just got a bad break…probably because he was under some kind of GSN strong hold to help put an end to Lingo…or something like that.

If none of the above occur, then I agree that Bob Eubanks should have a hand in picking the new host…sort of like passing the baton…and, maybe, do a guest shot…like Peter Tomarken did on “Whammy!”. Seriously, if he isn’t host, Bob Eubanks should have a hand in picking the predecessor…or give it to Chuck Woolery.

Lastly, I usually like bonus games…but, this show never had one…so, why change that now? I have an idea: maybe because GSN CONSTANTLY tinkers with stuff…whether it be their schedule or their own shows.

Like the old addage goes, if it ain’t broke….DON’T……FIX……IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • John Snecker says:

Get Richard Karn to host it

  • Scooter says:

    Drew Carey

  • David says:

Drew Carey?!?! The game show killer? Surely you jest, Scooter. Drew Carey is the antichrist.

  • MrQuiz says:

As far as I’m concerned, Drew Carey isn’t the real problem with TPIR. The real problem is the show itself. Look, people, we’re talking a game show that’s very likely been on the air since before you were born.
No game show in the history of television has had this kind of a run…EVER! At least one soap opera (AS THE WORLD TURNS) and MEET THE PRESS are the only TV shows that have been on the air continuously for over 50 years. It’s impressive that any TV show can stay around for 20 years, let alone over 35, or 50.
Point being this: nothing lasts forever. TPIR is just plain out and out long in the tooth…Carey, or no Carey. Barker, or no Barker. It would surprise me if it weren’t cancelled within the next five years.
It’d do CBS, and Fremental, er, uh, FreMANTLE good by having it go out a “winner,” not unlike what ABC did with the original FAMILY FEUD in 1985. There’s no shame in that, gang. And, for that matter, screw Fremantle; as far as I’m concerned, it’s the legacy of Goodson-Todman that matters.

  • DeVares says:

True, MrQuiz. However, The Newlywed Game has been on the air longer than that (granted it’s been through a number of arrests, including a decade between the last version and the upcoming revival). So there’s nothing wrong with ending TPIR and bringing it back in a few years. As for the subject at hand, I’m hearing almost everyone saying Bob Eubanks should host. IMO, he should either host or have something to do with the show (possibly as a consultant). There shouldn’t be an end game on the show. There haven’t been one on any of the previous incarnations, so why should it have one now? Come on, GSN, get it together.

  • Scooter says:

Its so easy to get you all rialed up. Sorry. Yes, my vote would go for Bob Eubanks and NOT Drew Carey, however I would not lose sleep if its not Bob Eubanks. However, I would think it be silly to not have him involved in some capacity.

  • Propagandhi says:

I would vote for Bob Eubanks, if not then Chuck Woolery. However, if Karn is in then I am out. He has ruined Bingo America.

  • Antonio Gray says:

    Propagandi,

Richard Karn is the best thing to help Bingo America…

  • DeVares says:

To Propagandi: Bingo America isn’t hurt at all.

Other than Bob Eubanks, I would pick Chuck “two and two” Woolery. Fred Roggin would be a good host had it not been for the fact that he’s hosting the upcoming “The Money List”.

  • Andy says:

    MrMcQuiz
All due respect, but when ABC cancelled FEUD in 1985, it hardly “went out a winner.” It was constantly being beaten by the competition, and indeed, in the final ABC episode, Richard Dawson, in his on-air acknowledgements, thanked the ABC execs who kept them on the air and that they “probably kept us on the air a year or two longer than they should have” (ratings-wise).

  • janeane says:

i know a cameraman who shot the pilot and he said everyone hated judy gold. the audience laughed at her, but she treated the crew like crap and was very insulting. doesn’t surprise me. i saw her live and she spent half the time telling the audience what losers they were. another hostile lesbian – not exactly great for the newlywed game.

  • Intelligentfan777 says:

Bob Eubanks should return to host, or at least have some kind of hand in the direction of the show. If so, I’m Making Whoopie…….er, on board I should say. :p

Also, it is Michael Davies. One of the true Good Guys in the biz (sans GSN Chain Reaction), so I have faith.
