GSN is making a pilot for a show called War of the Words, a format created by Mast Media. This pretty much casts down all hope for That’s the Question to turn into a series, since they are both “word-based quiz shows.” Steve Havers of Mast Media comments, “A simple high-concept game show that can be produced at high volume and low cost is just the sort of show we were hoping to develop as part of this agreement.” Doesn’t that pretty much describe any show GSN has made?

Just a thought, but since GSN is so interested in word games (Chain Reaction, That’s the Question, Lingo) maybe it’s time they do an american version of Countdown. a few twists I’d trow in: 7 letters in the letters game ($500 bonus for a 7-letter word) all words are acceped unless challenged by your oponent. Bob Goen could host but I haveno idea who to put there for a hostess. Shandi puts into mind but she’s already to busy with Lingo and Playmania and I doubt GSN would want to give her 3 shows. Besides Countdown and other foreign version do not give away that big a grand prize which is exactly what GSN is looking for.

Countdown will never work in the US. It’s too smart and between J! and Millionaire, Madison Ave thinks that there are enough “smart people game shows” on the air. I think half the reason Countdown has lasted so long in Britain is that it has tenure, and thus developed the loyal fanbase that will watch come hell or highwater.
