GSN Airing New Poker, Animal Shows

Imagine if you will: two professional poker players playing the same hand of poker, taking turns for each round of betting. The “Doubles Poker Championship” is exactly this. It’s an 11-week series beginning August 14 at 9pm ET. Antonio Esfandiari, Phil Gordon, Mike Matusow, and more compete for $1,000,000 by playing as partners. Also listed are Annie Duke and Howard Lederer. I wonder if they might’ve ended up together in a round or two…

Now, let’s spin out of that thought for something much different. Let’s pretend for a moment that “Think Like a Cat” is the best show ever. That’s pretty much what you’ll think with “Dog Park Superstars,” airing August 29th at 7pm ET. Owen Benjamin and Laura Nativo host a competition where five dogs and their owners compete in skill-based games to win… a golden hydrant. Apparently $1,000,000 isn’t captivating enough.

Poker show: neat twist, but if they’re all pros I don’t really see a huge change in play except for rare hands where the first partner bluffs where the other would’ve rather fold, and now has to keep up the bluff or risk being called on it.

Dog show: insert finger into throat

  • Joe says:

    Sounds interesting….”That’s My Dog”, anyone?

    5 words: Family Channel’s “That’s My Dog”

Looks like the clock is ticking on the end of classic game shows – I bet “Pyramid”, Richard Dawson’s “Feud”, “Match Game”, and “Card Sharks” are off the schedule by the end of the year! That’s all we need – more poker, and more animal shows! Didn’t GSN learn after the ‘cat-astrophe’ they had with Chuck Woolery’s farce? They should have brought back “Lingo” instead!

    And then there was Catminster.

  • Closing Logo Enthusiast says:

Who said anything about the classics? They’re here to stay at least for a while.

  • Tataki says:

God, no more poker. They’ve got plenty of boring poker shows, do they REALLY need another?

GSN usually limits its poker parties to Sunday nights, where they seem to do quite okeh. If they start giving us the flop, the turn and the river on weeknights, then we might be in trouble!

And isn’t this the same GSN that is reviving “1 vs. 100″? That revival strikes me as a good idea!

As for the dog show–well, it’s likely to be a dog, as far as I am concerned. But then, I don’t get on well with dogs or cats!

Poker shows cater to a much different demographic, and one that brings higher paying advertisers. Be happy that GSN is putting money behind poker because it translates to more money from advertisers, which translates into more game shows like 1 vs 100.

This dog show, though…has me wondering if it’s not being sponsored by Purina or something. Could it be another attempt to just make a few bucks in advertising dollars? I have no problem with that. It might end up being crap, but you can’t deny that Think Like A Cat wasn’t worth the money it brought. It gave us Catch 21 and Newlywed Game.

The dog show won’t last long more than likely; the viewers will reject it and it will die a quiet death because it’s been done (better) before. So I won’t worry about that.

As for poker; although I don’t enjoy the game and won’t watch this, I understand it brings in better advertising dollars, and at least it’s a weekend thing, so I can live with it. I do agree that they shouldn’t air it on weekdays; it’d be too Deal-esque (as in too many airings).

Interesting on the poker show, I thought maybe they were going a different direction.

Have two different tables playing. They all play with the same chips every hand, maybe like $10,000, and maybe $200/400 blinds. Shuffle up a deck of cards, and then make a “duplicate” deck, where everyone at the second table gets the exact same cards and board cards. They can’t see how the other table is playing.

They all play their hands out. Then, each of the matching “hands” is compared, and whomever ended up with more money after the hand was over wins the difference. IE, the players with a 3-8 maybe both folded, so, they came out even. Someone with a J-5 decided to bluff awhile and lost,

Would make a lot different type of play in a hand I think.

There actually was a game as you mention, done by a company called SkillPoker in Canada, which in theory had a great premise, but the company went bankrupt.

  • Tataki says:

Well, DPS is certainly not as bad as I expected. Is it just a special or is it a series?

  • Phillip says:

Apparently, GSN is rerunning it today, 2PM EDT
