GSN Acquires “Dancing With the Stars” Reruns for January 2012

Today GSN announced it has acquired the exclusive off-network rights to ABC’s popular dancing game show Dancing With the Stars.  GSN will be the only network to air the reruns of the celebrity dancing game hosted by Tom Bergeron which last night alone saw over 20 million viewers, many in GSN’s core demographic.  The network has picked up the rights to series four through 13, the current season which concludes tonight.  They also have the rights to the upcoming 14th series.  Season four includes former GSN host Shandi Finnessey.  Former GSN’s 1 VS 100 host Carrie Ann Inaba is a judge on the series.

“Many of the most popular shows on television today—including DANCING WITH THE STARS—are essentially game shows at their core,” says Amy Introcaso-Davis, Executive Vice President of Programming for GSN. “GSN is all about the potent combination of games, competition, entertainment and fun, and we know that DANCING WITH THE STARS is a show our female audience already loves.”  This is Amy’s first major acquisition since joining GSN recently.

I’d say it’s a smart move by GSN but you never know.  GSN tried off-network reality with The Amazing Race previously but it didn’t work out.  However, this is different.  I don’t like the show at all and you may not like it either, but it’s hard to deny it’s incredibly popular.  Not to mention that its basic audience is, admittedly, middle aged ladies and that’s the group GSN is going after.  Regardless of what you or I think, it makes sense for them to do this.  We’ll see if it pays off.

The best channels for DWTS are Lifetime or Oxygen. When was the last time you heard a group of men talking about the show, really? If they’re trying to get my eyballs, they’re not doing a very good job at it.

Lately, I hardly ever watch GSN anymore. When they first aired the new episodes of good shows (Lingo, Catch-21, 1v100), they put it into my “dead zone” of 6pm-8pm, when I’m watching news, J! and WOF.

Note to GSN: bring back the reruns of 70′s G-T shows, where the games were fun to watch. You’ll get your core audience back.

Couldn’t have said it better myself Mountain Hawk – when they got rid of the G/T library, a lot of their audience left (including me.) “Match Game”,”Family Feud”, and “Card Sharks” episodes run over millions of times just don’t cut it!

If this does well enough and gets enough moolah and ratings to the network, maybe there can be room to get those g-t shows back and bring in one or two that haven’t beem seen in a long time…we can only hope this is a good move because seriously what other reality show would be worth acquiring that doesn’t do the same crap…you need the one that makes the money to get enough to get the g-t shows back and i believe with this move they can. I want to see those shows back just as much as you do…wouldn’t hurt to get a few other Bob Stewart or other gs libraries in there as well if this does well enough

They don’t need the core, they need more.

    ……………………………really?

“Many of the most popular shows on television today—including DANCING WITH THE STARS—are essentially game shows at their core”???

As Craig Ferguson might put it…”NO THEY’RE (OOH LA LA) NOT!!!”

Thanks, GSN…for giving me a reason to stick with Netflix! Just when I consider maybe getting TV service again, I read a story about a bonehead move like this.

Is this some kind of a joke? I’m sorry but I don’t know what’s going on here.

Remember what GSN is for, it’s Game Show Network. That’s that.

  • Guy Lobner says:

Are you sure they’re starting with season four? Why not just start with the first season?

  • Cody says:

There starting with season 4. They couldn’t get the rites to the first 3 seasons.

  • Myke25 says:

It would be cool if Sony could pair up with Fremantle to create a digital multicast channel (like Antenna TV or MeTV) that would be a free, over-the-air version of GSN’s early days…lots of G-T classics and the other classics that Sony has acquired over the years (The Stewart and Barry-Enright shows, etc.) Instead of it being buried on a digital tier on cable, everyone with an antenna could watch it. Hey, a man can dream, can’t he?!

    • Anthony Jr. says:

agree. maybe GSN should split in two 2 different game show channels(with the assist from Fremantle Media, Challenge TV, Network Ten, Sony, & Nickelodeon) to create GSN Classic (Dedicated to Cult Classic Game Shows From USA, UK, Australia) and GSN Modern(showcasing the US, UK and Aussie game shows during the modern day era).

  • Digifan23 says:

*Facepalm* Smart move GSN right up there with Amazing Race (aka The Dumbest Rat Race) congratulations you’ve given me ANOTHER reson to watch YouTube for Game show you stupid idiots in the chief Ramsy “PISS OFF GSN”

  • Robert Palmer says:

Wow…back when I got GSN in 2001…it was great. It had the classics, and pure originals that everybody loved. It seems that they are grasping at straws at this point. That is…they really didn’t learn ANYTHING from the Amzing Race at all. Reality game reruns, really don’t equal a high rerun value. Espcially if those shows have had very few episodes (see the Dog Eat Dog rerun abuse).

    • David says:

What’s really odd is that, very likely, they could’ve picked up an actual game show with the money they spent on this. I don’t pretend like I know the inner workings of the network, but something is missing there. Almost like they’re thinking “What can we do to get these pesky game shows off this channel?”, as ridiculous as that sounds.

Mmm, mmm, mmm. GSN, what in the name of Vince McMahon did you acquire a show like this instead of getting classic stuff? Can’t you pretty much do us a favor? Please bring what GSN used to bring 10 years ago instead of watching z-listers dance for a trophy bought from a trophy shop down the street from CBS Television City where the show is. Please!

GSN should be “the network for games,” not “the network for reality.”

  • LMLyons says:

My grandchildren and I enjoy many of your game shows. To name a few lingo, chain reaction, who wants to be a millionaire, are you smarter than a 5th grader. Something that we can play along with, and have fun. Dancing with the stars is not my idea of a game show, This was not a better idea11111111
