Game Shows Up for Daytime Emmy Awards

The nominees for 2010 Daytime Emmy Awards have been announced and game shows were well represented.  Some of them are the usuals, but this year there were quite a few names we haven’t seen before.

The games up for Outstanding Game/Audience Participation Show are: Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy!, Cash Cab, The Price is Right, and Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?.  What do I think will win?  I think it’ll probably be Jeopardy!.  What do I think should win just based on personal opinion?  I’ve got a feeling a lot of people will disagree, but I think Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader? was amazing this season.  I think the Emmy committee doesn’t look at this, but from my critical viewpoint the show improved exponentially from the primetime run to what we have now.  It’s always consistently fun, funny, entertaining, and engaging.  They’ve completely sucked me in and the improvement from the past season is amazing.  I’d love to see The Price is Right get it, too, but the improvement that Fifth Grader showed is deserving in my critical mind.

The game show host category is full of new entries.  Outstanding Game Show Host has three of the usuals: Pat Sajak, Alex Trebek, and Cash Cab‘s Ben Bailey.  Two new entries are Let’s Make A Deal‘s Wayne Brady and The Newlywed Game‘s Carnie Wilson.  This is GSN’s first Daytime Emmy nomination ever, so congratulations to them.  Who do I want to win?  I really want it to be Wayne Brady.  From the very first show he stepped into the host role confidently and well, and he’s only improved from there.  He’s a big reason why this show is a success.  It’s a host driven show.  If you don’t have an engaging, quick-on-his-feet, fun host, Deal dies.  They could not have picked anyone better than Wayne Brady.  He’s also complemented perfectly by announcer Johnathan Mangum and model Tiffany Coyne.

What do you all hope wins each category?

Wayne Brady? Really? He is good, but not that good to get an award. The only one deserving of winning it is Trebek. The guy tapes 5 shows in a day. He has to read 305 clues a day without messing up. And not once has he messed up enough to ruin the game. That takes skill from a guy nearing 70.

  • Chris says:

oh please.. I'm sure Trebek screws up reading those answers all the time. You just never see it because it gets all edited out of show, as not to interrupt the flow.

And all hour hour game shows tape 5 episodes a day. It's not unusual.

  • TomZee says:

    Chris,
Correction is in order for you…as someone who went to and was on Let's Make a Deal in December, they only tape two shows a day over either four or five days a week. Look up the taping schedules for LMAD or Price is Right on cbs.com

  • Actually, sitting through a taping of "Jeopardy!" myself, I have to disagree with you there Chris. Trebek doesn't screw up, and there is little to no editing done to the show. Basically, what you see on TV is what you get in the studio.
I believe he said (while talking to the audience) that she receives all of the clues for the day when he gets into the studio by about 7a or so, and just reads through them as he's taking breaks for makeup and whatnot…

Drew Carey refuses to get Emmy nominated

    Predictions:
OGAPS will go to either Cash Cab or Jeopardy. I don't think Fifth Grader is up to Emmy material just yet, but give it a year or two. I wouldn't be suprised to see it happen (assuming it lasts longer than DOND… remember how it got much better reviews than the primetime version, yet it burned out miserably in the second season?) in a season or two.

I hope the Outstanding Game Host goes to Wayne as well. I'm mildly suprised Carnie got the nomination, but I'm also happy for her and GSN as well. I don't really get their obsession with Ben Bailey, he's a perfectly compentent host, but he's not anything really outstanding, IMHO.

    I respectfully disagree…

Wayne Brady has become really good. In the beginning, he was too comical (like Drew Carey was in the beginning of his tenure on TPIR)…but, he's improved in my opinion.

Trebek, although great too, he has messed up a couple of times recently.

Wayne Brady on LMAD is very funny I hope he wins the daytime emmy for that show and Price is Right or Wheel of Fortune would win as the best game show

  • Brian in CT says:

Owen, I wouldn't hold my breath for Wheel. In its 35 year history, in spite of numerous nominations, Wheel of Fortune has NEVER won for Outstanding Game Show. Its the biggest game show Emmy snub besides no wins for Match Game (1973-1982 version).

  • I really hope Wayne wins too. While, yes, Alex is prestigious and I love him dear, he has a lot under his belt. I think giving the award to some newbies is great. Besides many know how much the Emmys love Wayne Brady (the only Emmy for a cast member of WLIIA?, his talk show.) and this being his first year hosting, the chemistry was great.

I'll use a ranking system number 1 being my favorite to win and number 5 being my least favorite:

    1. Wayne Brady 2. Alex Trebek 3. Carnie Wilson 4. Pat Sajak 5. Ben Bailey

I've always felt Wayne Brady was very underrated even though he got the emmy for his talk show it only lasted a year and don't forget the lyrics only lasted 2 seasons even though it was such a fun show. Alex has always been my favorite but he's won the emmy umpteen times already I'd rather see a newbie win it. But I still put him above Carnie because although I've been really impressed with Carnie's work, She's fun and interacts incredibly well with the contestants but you can tell when she's reading cue cards and that's my only gripe. I've never really liked Pat Sajak especially in the alst few years, it just seems to me he looks bored at times and he's just going through the motions on wheel now. Ben Bailey (has someone else said) is hardly outstanding but remember cash cab won the emmy last year so could we see an upset?

  • George Smith says:

Okay so Carnie Wilson will never win an Emmy for Outstanding game show host… i've watched a few episodes of the newlywed game and its a major disappointment sorry. 5th grader better not win either… it's good but when you have juggernauts like wheel and jeopardy up there it doesn't stand a chance… i really think wheel is the most underrated top rated game show there is. I really wish they would give some credit to John O'Hurley and Family Feud… he's the best host the show has seen since Richard Dawson. I may be spit balling here but those are just my thoughts.
