Game Show Nominees for 38th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards

The 38th annual Daytime Emmy Awards are rapidly approaching and, as always, game shows are being represented well.  Last year Discovery’s Cash Cab (a show I still think is incredibly overrated) swept the games, winning both best game show and best host for Ben Bailey.  They’ll both be back trying for yet another, but a field of others will try to keep the newest Emmy Award off their shelf.  The host this year will be Let’s Make A Deal‘s Wayne Brady.

Nominated for best game show host are Ben Bailey of Cash Cab, Wayne Brady of Let’s Make A Deal, Meredith Vieira of Who Wants to be a Millionaire, and, shockingly, Todd Newton of The Hub’s Family Game Night.  Only reason I say shockingly is because I didn’t see that one coming.  I’m not talking about his talent or anything.  I just didn’t expect to see it.  Out of that field, I’d love to see Meredith get it.  She got a massive second wind with the new format of Millionaire and is at the top of her game.  I haven’t seen her this good in a while, if ever.  I’m a little shocked not to see Steve Harvey up there, though.

Best game show nominees are Cash Cab, Jeopardy!, The Price is Right, and Wheel of Fortune.  I will never understand how and why Cash Cab gets the award so much beyond the fact that it’s very low key in a world of over-the-top games, but that’s not enough for me.  That show bores me to death.  Out of that field I’d have to imagine Jeopardy! would win, especially with the whole Watson situation earlier.  Part of me would get a laugh out of The Price is Right winning, though, to see a core group of fans go crazy.  I don’t watch these awards, or any awards at all really, so it may as well make me laugh.

As we also previously reported, Alex Trebek and Pat Sajak will be getting Lifetime Achievement Awards.  The ceremony takes place June 19th on CBS.

Alex and Pat don’t get a nod, either. When was the last time they didn’t get a nod? They’ve gotten a nod every year since the late 80s anyway, no?

My guess maybe since they’re both getting a Lifetime Achievement award it seemed redundant to nominate them this year?

Meredith should win hands down. She is so good at getting the contestants, and very quick-witted. I feel the jumps take away the contestants “gut feeling”, so I miss that. Thanks, Alex, for your diligence and for the nice things you wrote about me. :)

Given that Sajak and Trebek are getting lifetime achievement awards, they were probably passed over.

IIRC, Fremantle had a reputation for submitting only TPiR material to the Daytime Emmy folk, leaving non-TPiR game shows on the backburner. I have to wonder if FF even bothers to send material to the Emmy people nowadays — O’Hurley was worthy of a nomination during his hosting run as well.

I don’t think Feud’s gotten a nod since the COmbs era, actually.(the 1995 nods during the Dawson return era were WHeel, J!, TPIR, and MTV’s Rock and Jock Derby, I’m not making the one last up either)

I’ll give Cash Cab credit for having a novel gimmick, but I’d probably nominate Hot Potato for best game show before I’d nominate Cash Cab. Seriously.

I really don’t understand how Todd Newton got a nom. I have never really liked him as the host of anything and especially not Family Game Night. I feel like that should be hosted by someone who would do a Nickelodeon game show. Not a somewhat seasoned “veteran?” Then again there are not many nominations possible outside of the norms of Pat and Alex. Once you take them out of the picture there’s not much really to look forward to. The same goes for best game show.

Steven Harvey was not nominated? WTF?

  • ????? says:

Cullen actually got TWO nods for Hot Potato. The eligibility period back then was March to March, so he was nominated in 1984 and 1985(Hot Potato aired from January to June). Just Men aired from January-April 1983 and it allowed Betty White to get two nods for Just Men(she won in 1984 and lost in 1984 to Barker)

Todd Newton got in and but Steve Harvey didn’t? WOW!!
    This ones a head shaker.

Plus the fact that LMAD got snubbed for Best Game Show is evil.
