“Fresh Prince of Bel Air” Reunion on “Catch 21″ Thursday, October 22

Catch 21_Fresh Prince Casts_TAli_JAvery_ARibeiro_KParsonsGSN’s going to continue to throw the celebrity shows at us with a special version of Catch 21 featuring ames Avery (Philip Banks), Tatyana Ali (Ashley Banks) and Karyn Parsons (Hilary Banks).  Will Smith was too busy doing, you know, movies and stuff.  Alfonso Ribiero, who hosts the hit GSN game show, was also on Fresh Prince so this special practically wrote itself.  The three actors will play for $25,000 for their favorite charities.  The fantastic Mikki Padilla is the dealer as always.  The special will air Thursday, October 22nd, at 6:30PM ET on GSN.

OK, now that we have the plug out of the way: is anyone getting sick of these constant celebrity specials or is it just me?  I mean one or two, maybe three, a season is fine.  But there has to have been around four since the new season started around two or three weeks ago.  It’s getting to be overkill.  No one watches game shows for the celebrities unless they were there from the start, like Hollywood Squares.  People started watching Catch 21 because it’s an enjoyable game and the actual contestants.  The constant celebrity shows have never worked on a single show.  I don’t know why we are thinking they will start to now.

You’ve got some of the production issues from season two down.  The rare non-celebrity shows have people who can count to 21 this season which is a relief.  If we make it to season four (and judging by the ratings I wouldn’t be shocked) please watch it with this celebrity overload, especially when 90% of the people you say celebrities aren’t.

I'm tired of all the specials with people from "The Biggest Loser" being called celebrities. Not one person would know their names if they saw them on the street. At least with this special, mostly everyone knows who these actors are from The Fresh Prince.

  • Dan Y. says:

Celebrity specials are the biggest game show crutch ever. Again, shows like "Match Game" and "Hollywood Squares" which are made to have celebrities are one thing, but celebrity special episodes are beyond irritating. In most, but not all, cases, the celebrity specials seem to be the ratings ploy that signals the downfall of the show. Jumped the shark, if you will.

    Be careful, Catch 21 producers…

    Celebrity Bullseye didn't work
Celebrity Beat the Clock didn't work

They were attempts to drive up ratings.

While I like how they're weaving the celeb shows with the traditional contestant shows (instead of a "celeb week"), overdoing this could kill what is one of the highest originals for GSN.

But I WILL be watching Thursday — Too bad they couldn't get Vivian Banks or Geoffrey the Butler as well and had Hillary be the Mikki for a day. ;)

  • @demoore says:

Very true. It never work. Prime examples are:

Password All-Stars- Which, basically killed ABC's version of Password.
Celebrity Double Talk- One I didn't get. It already had celebrities on it, and it didn't go to an all-celebrity format.

Like everyone else, I will be watching too.

  • Angela says:

What have the ratings been? You imply they've been good, but I don't think they are. No one I know watches the show or GSN anymore.

  • Rodney Flippen says:

I agree with you Alex, there are too many celebrity shows with Catch 21 and the Newlywed Game too. Usually a show that has the celebrity on it is doom to destruction. But, I am big of the Biggest Loser as well as Jackie Zeman, not mention the Deal or No Deal Models, and I really the cast of the Fresh Prince. So the celebrities that are on Catch 21 are not so bad.

  • MountainHawk says:

…And if you really want to go back in time, there's Celebrity Whew! The contestants were playing solo for the run of the show until the celebirites showed up and made it a "team" effort. Just what all hopeful winners need, an idiot with an attitude to help you lose the game. (See: Osmond Pyramid)

  • Craig says:

Yeah, panel shows are fine as long as civilians play, but by themselves, nuh-uh! I don't wanna watch special celebrity shows unless it's Celebrity J!(which has its Invitational this year).

  • Craig says:

That's all well & good, but remember what happened to Millionaire when they went all celebrity? The ratings tanked. GSN doesn't "Get It". J!'s smart with its celebrity shows almost every year. I can't say the same for GSN.
