First Look at the New “Family Feud” Set
One of our readers, Brent, went to the first taping of the brand new season of Family Feud today. The show moved to Orlando and got a new host, Steve Harvey. The show also got a new set. New is a bit of a stretch. Slightly updated is better. The board and family area and basic backdrop is the same. They just did away with the classic looking Face Off podium and family podium and made them slightly more modern. Also, the audience-in-the-round is gone. If you liked the old set there’s no real objections here. It’s the same as before. What do you think? Also, regarding the rules to the game, you still get a car for five wins.

All I can say is…wow…It’s still the classic meets new, but…I don’t know…I’m torn over the podiums. I think they might have gone too modern with those. Glad they brought the family name back to behind the families again. That was sorely missed last season.
BTW- Any report on what theme they used? Was it the Combs or the John Lewis Parker “Party” theme which the insisted on using for everything related to the show last season but not actually on the show.
I like the new backdrop and buzzers, but I miss the podiums from last season.
Anything heard about High Definition syndication with all these new things? It seems that the set would show well in HD.
It’s not bad. I like the audience removal because it looked forced in. This gives the set more space.
It also looks like the eggcrate -display scoreboards in front of the contestants’ stations have been replaced with flat-panel screens; to be expected. (sigh!)
Thank god. The eggcrates looked so stupid on the O’Hurley set. Flat-screens everywhere, then these out-of-place light displays.
Any word on Bullseye? Or if they’ll be using that same awful 30-second loop of the Combs theme?
To both MrQuiz and CJ:
I think the eggcrate displays are exclusive to Los Angeles. I know that because I’ve never seen any game shows outside of L.A. that utilize eggcrate displays. But yeah, it’s a breath of fresh air to see something different because they were starting to get old and outdated anyway.
It does look more…modern. It looks like the entire floor is set to change color, so it looks like that will be cool. 2 questions though…
Is Bullseye coming back?
Are the family poses staying or being dropped?
No Bullseye yet & the poses seemed to be dropped unless these were pre taped before the audience entered because I didn’t see them at all.
Podiums, maybe I can get used to them… but, I’m glad they kept the “classic” round board and the family sidewalls. Now, if the theme and Bullseye are still there…
The set is a similar transformation from Louie Anderson’s set to Richard Karn’s in the sense that it was a different look but it still had the same pieces of the previous set.
Looks nice from what I can see. Glad they brought the family names back… didn’t like the random furniture behind the families last season. Hope they have new music too… would be great to see the 1994 music package come back but even if it’s a new remixed package, I wouldn’t mind that either as long as it sounds good. The looped Combs music package is getting old.
I like it; I think they did a good job!
I Hope They Use the 1994 theme, cause if they don’t, i am going to be disappointed!
I’m gonna miss the old Face-off podium. I still don’t like Bullseye. I gave it a chance, but it ruined the main game for me. Glad they brought the names back as well.
The time is right to bring back some form of th ‘94 mix…..please!
Slightly updated and somewhat modernized. Not too bad. Touches of color make a nice salute to the somewhat brighter Anderson/Karn motifs. Should be visibly appealing,,,
BIG plus…the backdrops no longer look like sewer tunnels.
OK so the set has not been ruined forever….now we gotta know….gameplay differences? And how is Steve? You can bring back the Dawson set for all I care, but if the host is not “on,” it doesn’t matter to me.
This is so much better than the O’Hurley set! The last one looked way too crowded with the audience in the round and the audience right up against the stage. Can’t wait to see it in action!
Quick question: is Burton still the announcer?
Is the Bullseye round still in play?
No but who knows they could decide to re aid it mid season
LIKES:
01.I like the fact that they kept the family feud shaped board and the family portrit boxes anything else and it’s family fortunes again, which we had from 1999-2006.This is the U.S.A not england!
02.I am very happy to see that the auidence will not be on stage behind the set.I hope they won’t have any stupid posters anymore as well.(Having the audience sit there waving those lame posters around was one of the dumbest things I have seen on Family Feud since Fremantlemedia took over the show in 1999 and had Anderson as host and used that ugly set.
03.The stage is alot bigger and seems to change color.Durring the O’Hurley run of the show there was hardly any room to walk on that stage.
04.They are still going to have a car as a prize.
Dislikes:
01.The poduims. They are the uglyest things I have ever seen. They make the recreation of The Price Is Right set done in 2007 a true work of television art master piece. Why couldn’t they leave the original looking podiums in the show just ditch the egg crate numbers and replace them with LED tvs or nothing if they did away with the bullseye round. Also if they are going to keep the bullseye round than the bullseye cash amount should be kept on the family podiums and the Family Feud score should be kept on the arms of the big board, like they did durring the Combs era.It seems to me that the people of the Dawson and Combs era (1976-1995) knew what they were doing. They really knew how to run this show.It took fremantlemedia 7 years till they got somwhat of an idea on how to run this show and make Family Feud enjoyable for Americans. But now with these new, ugly podiums they took a giant step back.
02.It appears they are going to still use the unreadable letters and numbers for fast money,if anything needs to be changed on the show it is that. You can’t tell the difference from the letter “A” and the letter “R”,to me it looks like a first grader wrote out the fast money board and the thing that amazes me about this is it has been the same way since 1999!Make a readable, neater looking fast money board already!
03.I know it’s a bit early to say this but I don’t think I am going to like Steve Harvey.I think he is going to let politics, race, religion and his ego get in the way of the show.I guess we will just have to let time be the judge of that.(And it has nothing to do with him being black.I did’t have these fears when Al Rooler hosted. To be 100% honest I enjoyed watching Al Rooker host Family Feud.So don’t start crying racism to me because I am not a bigot)
Hopes:
01. I hope they still use the Score Production theme/Combs theme and not that ear drum killing party mix that was used from 1999-2006.
02.I hope they use the original face off cues instead of the same piece of music over and over and over and over and over.
03.They let the entire feud theme play no repeating.
04.Bullseye round is still around. With $20,000 being the least a family can play for if they make it to fast money.
05.I hope Family Feud will finally get a cool new website that is always being updated, sort of like the ones that The Price Is Right and Wheel Of Fortune has.
Some extended family in the crowd had signs but don’t expect it to take too much away they had them hold them up took a close up shot & that was it. It’s something that was bound to happen though unless the family didn’t have anyone coming to watch them.
Steve as a host may be a love/hate thing I’ll write more in my short report but religion is a big thing with him but when it was brought up it was more in a joking manner with the dirty questions.
No Bullseye & the theme/music was done like last season
Dang. I really liked the Bullseye round. It added something to the game that I really liked.TT_TT
I agree on a few things you said, especially the Combs or the Dawson II theme, it should be included, and as far as crying racism goes, it’s not racist if you don’t like that particular person, you have an opinion and you’re entitled to it.
Having said, love the set. It has that current look that it was lacking in this incarnation. The eggcrate scoreboard is gone, so that’s a good thing (seeing as this is 2010, it’s not necessary to have them). I hate the Bullseye round is gone, but I understand seeing as they want to see how Steve will do as host, not to mention familes usually accumulate an average of less than the $20,000 they could’ve won on previous seasons. And, in conclusion, I’m looking forward to the new season.
I loved watching the Combs version of the feud Keep the Combs theme and bring back the hillbilly music for the face-offs like in the Dawson/Combs versions I’d watch that over the local newscasts that air at that time.
Steve Harvey might be ok but if thats the case people grew to love Wayne Brady doing LMAD, Brady is funny .I personally preferred Ray Combs (RIP) over the other Family Feud hosts, the second would be O’Hurley then Dawson and Anderson and Karn
Yeah Steve might need to grow on people but he really is a great host I’ll throw a few things into my write up that will give you an idea of what to expect with him.
Indeed. In a perfect world, Combs would have overcome his demons and went on to at least be one of the hosts of this version.
Is Marco Antonio Regil bilingual? I would have liked to see him on our Feud too…
Marco *is* bilingual, and apparently did make an appearance on our Family Feud back in 2002 (go to user/marcoaregil on YouTube and look for the video when Marco talks about possibly being the new host of American Price). I agree, he’d be awesome at this, considering he’s done 100 Mexicanos Dijeron and ¿Qué Dice la Gente? (Spanish-language versions of the Feud).
So now that the Bullseye round is gone, do the families play for $20,000 or will it be more?
$50,000 would be ideal in this day & age imo but I’m pretty sure that they don’t have the money for that especially seeing as how they still will have a car for families that win 5 games.
$30,000 would be nice (families could win a possible $150,000).
It’s still 20K
I would like to see at least $25k for this version. Plus, I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO happy they got rid of the Bullseye round. It did nothing but take away the opportunity for family interaction. The Feud is not about all about winning money to me. Yes, the families go on to try to win money, but the reason why I watch is to see the interesting families and stupid answers. I’m happy they got back to the basics.
That being said, the set looks good, but…wow…it looks like I could take-off into space on that set. It is way too futuristic, IMO.
Can’t complain about the set from what I’ve seen. It’s a stylish, tasteful update to the previous set, which itself was a modernization of the classic look.
Another question that hasn’t been addressed: Is Burton Richardson still the announcer?
I can’t be 100% sure because the audio for the intro was a bit lower so it was a bit harder to hear from the audience but I’m quite positive it’s still him. It went something to the effect of “from sunny Orlando…” as a intro to the shows new home.
So the intro was pre-recorded? I know Burton used to warm up the audience and do the intro live in the studio when the show taped in LA. I guess Burton wanted to stay in LA, but they decided to use his pre-recorded voice instead of getting a new announcer.
It does seem like live in-studio announcers are becoming more and more scarce… from what I’ve read, even Johnny Gilbert’s intros on Jeopardy! are pre-recorded sometimes now. But I guess the producers don’t think it’s worth having someone come in just to talk for 30 seconds at the top of the show.
Yeah it’s pre recorded I don’t blame him for not wanting to move to FL while they tape. The warm up guy isn’t bad & did his best to keep us upbeat during the longer down time.
I guess Burton is still with the show, but won’t be live, just pre-recorded. I remember during the 1998-2004 version of Hollywood Squares, the announcers were not in the studio. Their parts were pre-recorded, except when guest announcers Rod Roddy and Shadoe Stevens appeared on the set annoucing there.
I believe on Pyramid (actually Donnymid), John Cramer’s stuff was prerecorded.
Is a non-win fast money still $5 a point?
I believe if I heard correctly $6 a point
I’m really liking this set. Especially the floor and the solid, non-audience filled space between the board and the contestant area. I’m also glad to see the family name displays will be used again in Season 12.
All in all it’s a very nice looking and traditional set. Just what any true Feud fan would ask for.
Also I’m glad they’re still using “The Feud” for their theme song. I don’t care if it’s the 1988 mix. Now if they just used a real face-off cur it would be perfect! Still as long it’s “The Feud”, it’s all good. THANK GOODNESS they aren’t using that generic techno party crap anymore.
I guess I like the set, but am disappointed that they scrapped the other family podiums, especially the face-off one. These seem kinda out of place. I do like the current theme they use, its the FEUD theme and is fitting. Getting rid of it would be like getting rid of The Price is Right theme, you just can’t. I just wish they would use other parts to it instead of the same section over and over.
I agree. I’m glad they’re still using the “Feud” theme song but let’s mix it up a bit! The same segment of the song over and over for face offs and to lead into commercials gets old. How about doing what they did in the clip below. Check out the remixed face-off cue at the beginning and then the remixed cue used to go to commercial at the end. Both use the original music but jazzed up a bit. These cues exist so why not use them to break up the monotony??

Andy, that would be a really neat idea! That would bring back some of that nostalgic flair to the show. It’d be even better if they displayed the image of Steve and two of the players from the winning family on the game board, just like they did with Richard Karn’s first two seasons.
I also agree with the notion of bringing back the 2002-03 face-off cue. It would be ultra cool if they used the 2002-03 fast money edit of that cue for the opening on Steve Harvey’s Feud.
I like “The Feud” theme MUCH better than that JLP party music, but they really need some sort of face-off cue.
== JAY SEZ: ==
Hey, Brent — question on the face-off podium: what part of it gets lit up when a contestant buzzes in first – the blue part, the white part or both? And does it blink or change color?
Reason I asked — examples:
Original Dawson version — flashed the dots
Ray Combs/Dawson (‘94) — flashed red/yellow/orange, side of board lit up
Louie/Karn — flashed blue
O’Hurley — mashup of orig. Dawson and Ray Combs versions
Thanks! GAME SHOWS RULE!! :)
~JK~
looks cool
Of all the sets, the one from the Richard Dawson era is the best. People like the vintage— go back to the vintage look! Today’s sets have too many dumb visual effects. Also, bring back the original theme song! It wouldn’t hurt either to bring back Richard Dawson either to spice up the show/ratings. I hate seeing a new host every two years for this show.
