“Family Feud” Debuts New Season Today

Get set: Family Feud is back for another season.  Steve Harvey returns as host after increasing ratings by over 30% from his previous season and jumping the show to third place, only behind Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy!.  What should you expect this season?  More of the same comedy that literally brought hundreds of thousands more viewers to the show for starters.  Look for the audience to have a slightly different vibe as well.  The change from the Los Angeles to Orlando audience last season was noticeable.  Let’s see how it goes with Atlanta audiences.  Beyond that, the show’s working better than it ever has in this current version of Feud, so why mess with it?  The show’s posted two previews of the upcoming season.  Check them out.  What did you think of the season debut?

If Feud airs on the CBS station in your area between 4PM-8PM EST, The US Open will preempt it today. A post on Golden-road.net from someone who was at a recent taping says it took about two hours to tape two shows, and the shows have to be heavily edited due to Steve’s propensity to open his mouth. Steve had to rely on cue cards for some of the game mechanics, i.e. what to do next.

  • MountainHawk says:

Relying on cue cards for game mechanics is no big deal. One mistake can make the game illegitamate in the eyes of the S&P department. Better safe than sorry.

The intro was a little off to me…seems like they cut and splice Joey Fatone instead of just him re-doing it. Gameplay was great as usual. Interesting how Steve reveals the answer from bottom to top unlike previous versions. Fonts are bigger and can be greatly noticed. I even like the ending where a $20,000 win is featured during the credits. We should be in for another great season of Feud.

Memphis CW affiliate WLMT will be airing Harvey’s “Feud” one episode a day, Monday through Friday, at 10:00pm CST. Last season, they aired four episodes every Saturday beginning at 6:00pm CST, with one episode Sunday at 3:00AM CST.

Up until then, the last two O’Hurley seasons (2008-10) were not broadcast by any Memphis station, but his first two (2006-08) were aired by Ion Television-owned WPXX, which I consider independent since Ion is not generally considered a major network like CBS, ABC, NBC, and Fox, although the station did air MNTV (MyNetworkTV) from 2006 to 2009 before losing it to WLMT’s digital subchannel, 30.2.

WPXX aired two “Feud” episodes starting at 4:00pm CST, and moved the following season to two episodes staring at 9:00pm CST, before taking it off ultimately in 2008, with no other station signing on.

The first three seasons of the current run with Anderson (1999-2002) all aired on NBC affiliate WMC weekdays, initially before the noon newscast, and later before the 5:00pm news.

As for the Karn run, no station signed on for his first season. However, his second aired on ABC affiliate WPTY weekdays at 4:00pm, while his third aired on WLMT at 9:30am, with his final season airing on WMC at 3:30am.

How can not one Memphis station be able to hold onto the current “Feud” series in one timeslot and just keep it?

    • Maximus says:

This is one of those “why ask why” questions, such as why WMC didn’t see fit to carry $ale of the Century beyond its first season in the ’80s.

      • Brandon W. says:

I see where you’re going, but I was born in 1990, so this is all I know. Then again, I read something somewhere stating that WHBQ (before if switched from ABC to Fox in ’95) aired the 1977-85 syndicated “Feud” while still airing the ABC version. Upon the debut of the 1988-93 CBS version (which had to have aired on WREG), I guess the 1988-95 syndicated run also aired on WHBQ. I thought as a young boy I recalled seeing a few Combs episodes here and there on that station at night, and the final season (which I call “Dawson’s Homecoming”) in the daytime.

  • James says:

Other than a few REALLY minor changes, it’s the same show. If you liked it, you probably won’t change your mind. If you had quibbles with the show, same thing.

(The changes are: a really edited-down version of the opening, which disappointed me…that, and no meet-and-greets at the beginning of the game. Also, the sign near the car from the O’Hurley season is back. And Debmar-Mercury’s logo has a jingle. Like I said, REALLY minor stuff)

  • FF Fan says:

I watched the season premiere and had a few comments:

    1) I agree that Joey Fatone adds nothing to the intro. I understand that the show is taped in Atlanta now, but still, his pacing in the intro seems awkward.
    2) I also like the way the left-over answers are announced backwards.
    3) Steve is still hilarious as always. The editing works well between Steve’s comedic digressions and the need to get through the game.
    4) Stage is still great.
    5) Thankfully Steve is explaining the family videos before fast money. I think this is the greatest missed opportunity for Steve to joke about family members not in the game. In last year’s episodes, the video sequence didn’t work because it seemed like Steve didn’t see the video in advance; the sequence was awkward. Now the video sequence works.
    5) As the FF producers read this blog, I would recommend that they not shy aware from their Atlanta location. Yes, Orlando has more cache, but Atlanta is a up-and-coming tourist destination. There are thousands of hotel rooms in downtown Atlanta and over 90,000 in metro Atlanta (thanks to the Olympics, Atlanta is one of the largest hotel markets in the US). I would have the Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau partner with the show for ticket packages. Particularly considering the demographic of the live and viewing audience, there might be interest in out-of-towners going to the Atlanta Civic Center for shows. Atlanta is a major vacation spot for those in the South, particularly African-Americans. In particular, Steve’s reputation in the Black community could bring plenty of audience members to watch the show live. In turn, the viewing audience would grow. I say all this as a hospitality executive and former Atlantan.

Keep up the great work, Family Feud team!

I was also told that questions that neither side answers at the podium are no longer thrown out, which takes away a serious complaint: we know the second person will get an answer on the board if the first one doesn’t, which will render moot Steve’s tirades on a “stupid” answer from that position for those watching at home.

  • James says:

    Two $20K wins, not bad,

  • Joseph Neal says:

Another fantastic start to the season for Feud! I am glad they didn’t mess much with a formula that worked last season! As far as Fatone goes, the show works fine without an announcer anymore, to me, that is not a huge deal. I also kinda liked, but was surprised at first, to see the reveal from bottom to top, but, it works! Steve is back with his comedy that brought success and rejuvenation to this run of Feud. He doesn’t miss a beat at all with some of the lines he runs, and got even more comfortable with the role this year. I also kinda like the closing credit touch of showing a different camera angle of the Family win. I am also glad they kept the iconic Feud theme, and are still using the same set as last year – it is a great throwback to the version of the past, while looking sleek and modern! I can definitely tell that this is the same exec. producer and the same crew essentially that has worked on Feud for years, and really has it running like a well oiled machine, and is taking care of the Feud franchise like the icon that it is. Keep up the great work Feud! Looking forward to another great season!

  • Andrew says:

The UK versions of “Family Fortunes” always revealed the answers from bottom to top. I don’t see anything wrong with Steve Harvey doing that. Why was there no tournament of champions last season? This is the one thing that needs to be back in this season is a tournament of champions.

    • Brandon W. says:

Steve was working out the kinks during his first season, and he only taped one week of special episodes, with the TNA wrestlers.

  • Derek says:

Well I could not see it because Of the Open Men Tennis Tournament was going on. KCTV 5 Was supposed to air but no people want their news. So they moved it to MYKSMOTV.

    • HDtheman says:

I noticed that some shows “catered” to this. Most notably, Dr. Phil and his spinoff, The Doctors, delayed their season debuts by one day to tomorrow. My station here actually put the tennis on their subchannel. I have no idea why people are so into Tennis, it was virtually on CBS all weekend.

As for the taping in order comment, these are syndicated. ABC Dawson and CBS Ray Combs were network.

  • ????? says:

Will the family who won on the last taping from Orlando be a “returning champion” the show this season from Atlanta? And you can bet they picked episodes with bonus wins to kick off the season for both single and double run episodes, since it’s known the shows air out of order on Feud these days.

    • HDtheman says:

On the last show in May, the family was a five time champion. They didn’t have anybody to bring back

    • Steve says:

      Call out the losing horns!

While they will pick out two airing points, the shows will run in order from those spots. They don’t air out of order.

      • Brandon W. says:

Keep in mind that during Harvey’s first season, those who left after being defeated were brought back, possibly because of techinical difficulties during the production, though I’m not exactly sure how that can be the case.

      • Brandon W. says:

And by the way, in some cases, there is absolutely no such thing as episodes that don’t air out or order.

  • Bobby McBride says:

Remember, the car on offer this season is the same as last season, the Ford Taurus SE. Last season, it was blue; this season, it’s red & it’s worth $26,245.

  • Flame Moth says:

Love the show, still hate the out-of-order sequence for episodes. How hard could it possibly be to show episodes in the correct order if they could do it in 1976?

    • Cris says:

I agree – why can’t we see the five shows in sequence when someone wins – I don’t understand why it has to be that way – it used to follow through until the family lost (or won all five). That is my only complaint as think Steve is a great host – he can tell you off and you think he is joking!

  • Jay says:

I didn’t get to watch last season (except on the internet) because FF wasn’t shown in my area. But, it’s back this year. I like it, but I do have a couple of comments…

    1. I thought the ending was too short. Call me old-fashioned. But, I grew up with the original, and would love to have that intro back.

    2. During the Double and Triple point questions, why did they get rid of the “DOUBLE” and “TRIPLE” on the board? If Steve didn’t remind us, I’d totally forget…except, of course, when I see the scores multiply. Was the elimination really necessary?

I know I may sound nit-picky. But, everything else was great. I laughed a lot with the jokes, and the wins were great to see.

    • Woodie B. says:

The elimination of the ‘Double’ and ‘Triple’ words on the board began with John O’Hurley’s ‘Bullseye’ season of the Feud. They did that so that they could use questions that contained the ‘top’ seven or eight answers.

I was ROFLMAO on the ‘Bathroom’ answer.

      • Ben Mason says:

If the show EVER switches to HD, and they get Joey Fatone in the studio for once and eliminate the Comfort Inn moments and the edits of the family intros, and darken the lights of the audience during fast money, the show would get better! Damn!

      • Brandon W. says:

However, Steve’s first season (and hopefully his second) always had only four answers in the Triple round. It also happened when Anderson and Karn hosted.

Well, Anderson’s format (also used on Karn’s first season) was “most points win regardless of reaching 300″, so his Triple questions usually featured only three answers.

  • ????? says:

Dr. Phil delayed his season premiere by one day(although yesterday’s show was a new episode apparently) because it’s part one of a two-part interview with Casey Anthony’s parents. And CBS Television distribution syndicates his show, and CBS ran the US Open finals yesterday due to a rain delay. Same thing happened last year. It may be partially responsible for WOF and J! premiering a week later this year, that and J!’s wanting to run all three tourneys from the past season plus the Watson shows.

  • Woodie B. says:

Heard the answer of all (35 years of ridiculous) answers in Fast Money: Name something that you put on top of a salad…Whipped Cream!

  • Bobby McBride says:

I didn’t think the whipped cream answer was that bad; it makes sense for a fruit salad, IMHO.

  • Maximus says:

The person who wrote this post jests when he says, “the show’s working better than it ever has,” right? I mean, seriously.

  • Jack says:

I’ll second that Maximus – can anyone truely say this show has ever worked on any level??

  • Patricia says:

Steve Harvey has make Family Feud the best ever. I usually take a nap at this time but since Mr Harvey became host I haven’t missed a show. I hope Family Feud show their appreciation to one of the best. Thanks Steve!

  • Cris says:

Can anyone tell me when Family Feud is on in Fort Wayne, IN?
