Entertainment Tonight Visits the “Newlywed Game” Set

Posted by Alex Davis On February - 23 - 2009

We’ll have our behind the scenes look at The Newlywed Game, presented by e-harmony.com, very early this week if not today.  Sorry for the delay, I’ve been waiting for some pictures to show you all.  Until then here’s a clip of Entertainment Tonight interviewing former host Bob Eubanks and current host Carnie Wilson.  You can get a few glimpses of the set from it.

  1. Marko Polo Said,

Why do I sense slight bitterness from Bob? Ok, not “slight”, but MAJOR bitterness. I think he really wanted the job, but GSN is just looking for a fresh face for the game. It’d be great if Bob can come in to guest host a few episodes, just for old-times sake.

The set looks sleek, and there’s only 3 couples competing each episode? Looks like the couples will have better odds winning than in previous formats. I can’t wait to see how this one turns out.

  2. MrQuiz Said,

I think you are all reading into this waaaaaaaay too much. Sure, this IS Bob Eubanks’ show; it put HIM on the map, and vice versa. But, like it or not, sometimes, that’s the way these things work. We all have a tendency to feel that a host who has been THAT well associated with a given game show has a sort of “license” or “entitlement” to that show. I mean, you have every right to feel gypped; not unlike the way I gather you’ve (collectively) felt over Drew Carey taking over TPIR. Or, Donny Osmond hosting PYRAMID (you seem to forget that John Davidson was Dick Clark’s immediate successor; that version rolled over and died). I remember when Alex Trebek was pegged to host JEOPARDY! There were lots of anecdotal questions over whether he could fill original host Art Fleming’s shoes (we all know how that story ended); or when Barker himself became the “new” host of TPIR in ‘72, when my generation remembered Bill Cullen as host for the original version. Same thing with BEAT THE CLOCK…Bud Collyer was the original host; Jack Narz succeded him when the show came back in 1969. Jim Peck succeeded Tom Kennedy for an unsuccessful revival of Mr. Kennedy’s breakthrough show YOU DON’T SAY! (which TK hosted for six years in its original run).

I bring all of this up, because Carney Wilson’s becoming the latest host of NEWLYWED GAME represents something we all have to deal with…change. There are always reasons; we may or may not agree with them. We may or may not like them. We may or may not even understand them. And, if this new version of the show fails, blame GSN. Blame the producers. Blame Carney Wilson the way everyone blamed Donny Osmond for how he did PYRAMID; the way DC is now doing TPIR, if you must. But, that’s life.

  3. KBGUY09 Said,

You have a very good point, MrQuiz…the only reason I disagree is because ur points have to do with retirement or moving on from a show, whereas Bob Eubanks WANTED to host the show. It’s only GSN, not a major network, so they need something that will put the show on the map for them. Bringing back the old host I think would at least help.

And come to think of this, GSN has jipped the original host out of his show before. Now I actually like Todd Newton to a degree, but between him and Peter Tomarket… there’s no question! IDK what GSN is thinking, I do hope it works but I think if Bob was there it would work. They should’ve given him the job.

  4. MrQuiz Said,

KBGUY09…I still think you and everyone else are trying to make a mountain out of a molehill. Eubanks has every right to be sad, maybe disapponted. But, I think he’s too much a of a pro, and too much of a “bigger man” to harbor bitterness. And he (and Tomarken) aren’t the first emcees to have gone through this. It also happened to Gene Rayburn, with regard to the 1990 version of MATCH GAME.

And, don’t forget, this isn’t the first time this has happened to ol’ Bob. He was once replaced by Paul Rodriguez, and then there was that abomination with Gary Kroger.

Nonetheless, it’s still GSN’s call. And while we’re all at it, unless you’ve seen the pilot, or been to a taping, nobody’s got a right to pre-judge the show, or Carney Wilson’s abilities (although I WILL agree, that the set looks like shit. But, hey, after all, this IS the 21st Century, and sometimes, what we may consider “tradition” – you make your own calls, here – is blown away in favor of “progress”), until after the show has been on the air for a little while, anyway. OK?

  5. Chris Said,

Does the set remind anyone else of the Donny Pyramid set?

  6. grinch3 Said,

Someone made the comment that GSN wanted a younger host. One of the most successful game shows that GSN has had did not have a younger host-Chuck Woolery hosted Lingo for many seasons and it was a success.Chuck is in the same age range as Bob Eubanks . Personally I believe that if the original host is still available to host a show,he should be the first one considered to be host.Had Bob Eubanks been picked as host of this version,it would have brought his fans to GSN to watch the new show.I really would like GSN to bring Bob back to make an appearance .I’ll watch the first few Carnie shows but given GSN’s track record with revivals of classic game shows ,it may go the same way as I’ve Got A Secret and Whammy.

  7. MrQuiz Said,

Hey, grinch! I don’t disagree with your logic AT ALL! But, unfortunately, there are those decision makers, who are of a certain mentality, who (as my best friend’s mother says) “don’t think like (we) do.”

  8. Brad D. Said,

Yeah it’s really obvious that deep down inside Bob is disappointed. Why else would he state that if he would have hosted this incarnation that he would be the only host to have hosted the same game show for 5 decades?

The set is pretty nice though you can tell it’s low budget due to its size and its simpleness. I never really liked the Newlywed Game or the ripoffs of it (such as I’m Telling!). They just weren’t that exciting to watch for me. However I do like Tattletales (which I guess is strange in a way). But anyways, here’s to hoping that GSN’s Newlywed Game gets a decent run. GSN is on a roll in terms of original programming (aside from the Cat game show lol).

  9. Seth Said,

We all know that this is definitely Bob Eubanks’ show. However, remember they said a similar thing back in 1972 about Bill Cullen when the Price is Right was being brought back to television. Soon after that, it was Bob Barker’s show, and it was for 35 years. And back in 2007 they said the same thing about Bob Barker when Drew took over.

On the other side of the coin, The Newlywed Game was given over to Paul Rodriguez in the late 80’s and it failed to garner the audience that Eubanks got. Same thing with 1996 when Gary Kroeger took over the show, albeit with a different format. But in 1996, the brought Bob back to host the show, and it only lasted a couple of seasons with him.

I do think that a fresh face and fresh ideas are needed for the new incarnation. I think we have to give Carnie a chance to shine and succceed in her own right. Although Bob will always be Mr. Newlywed Game, the couples are different, the times are different, and the interactions will be different. I do hope, though, that they do give him a chance to host a show or week of shows so that he can have that disctinction of hosting the same format in five decades. He sure deserves it. But that should come when Carnie makes her mark.

  10. Dixie McCausland Said,

Well Carney has gone to far. She has taken a cute show and made it vulgar. It's a shame that she can get by
with this. Another pet peeve is not putting the proper date on the newleywed game and on her show.
