“Don’t Forget The Lyrics!” Goes Syndicated in Fall 2010

This just in: The hit Fox game show Don’t Forget The Lyrics! will be going into daily syndication in Fall 2010.  It’s been cleared in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Houston and Washington, D.C..  The singing game show will be partnered with Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader? across the country.  Coincidentally these shows were paired for much of their nice run on Fox, where they regularly scored good ratings.  Former Sugar Ray lead singer Mark McGrath will be host.  Mark was also previously the host of the entertainment news magazine show Extra.

Lyrics!
will replace Deal or No Deal Tuesday nights on MyNetwork.  As we reported a while ago, Deal or No Deal is not expected to return to national syndication, ending the shows long run starting on NBC.  Some other network where the show is popular (coughGSNcough) wouldn’t be dumb to attempt to pick it up in more of the European style where the budget is lower and prizes aren’t as huge.  But I digress.  Lyrics will also air on VH1, following the original airing model done by Fifth Grader which made it so financially sound, and it was a genius idea.  Lyrics was pretty enjoyable for what it was on Fox, so it’ll be nice to see what they can do in the daytime edition.  Most likely they’ll just lower the top prize to $250,000 and keep things the same, or they could just copy the daytime Fifth Grader format which ended up nice also.  We’ll get more information in the upcoming days/weeks when information comes out.

So what are we thinking?  Excited?  I think it’s a nice winning combo.

I never heard of Mark McGrath i am glad Deal or no Deal is leaving its tired i enjoy the foreign versions more then ours. Im going to check out the new version of Lyrics. I am happy the cube is not Syndicated

  • Have to agree, Travis. Not sure what the ratings are for The Singing Bee on CMT, but they must be pretty decent to have a second season with Melissa Peterman.

So there you go, Don’t Forget the Lyrics and Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader….together again (*sings* Reunited and it feels so good….sorry, but I had to do it). Not bad, although I would’ve guessed it would’ve been The Cube since it was coming back from the dead. As for Deal or No Deal, let’s just say in Shreveport, KTBS will have to find another lead-in for Jeopardy! at 4:00 come September, might I suggest Lyrics? Wouldn’t be bad if they moved J! to 4 and Lyrics to 4:30 because, IIRC, back in ’84 they aired Name That Tune at 4:30.

Mark McGrath hosting the show is a big question mark for me, not that I doubt his game show hosting abilities, but how will he interact with the contestants? And finally…..

Why do people still think the Hub will be another GSN? Alex explained this to us last week that it’ll be another (juliaz12345 mentioned) The (pre-Fox/ABC) Family Channel. So unless they’re doing a game show version of Transformers or My Little Pony (run for the hills if that happens), that’s highly unlikely.

I think people are wishfully thinking, considering how GSN has changed in the past 12+ months, that this Discovery/Hasbro venture will become an all-game network, showing the roots that GSN once had. I think these people want this because they want the execs who are running GSN, rather the Family Deal Network, today to see what they are losing because of their decisions lately.

For the record I should just say that no, it won't be a game show channel and that was a given from the start. However, given the numerous big people they've enlisted (practically the entire Game Show Network crew from the Lingo/Russian Roulette days), they are serious about making good ones for everyone.

I'll be curious to see how DFTL will be modified to fit the 30-minute format. When 5th Grader was first announced in syndication, there was a great deal of concern that the show would simply repeat the Fox version, especially after early PR suggested that would be the case. But common sense prevailed, and the show seems to work better as 30-minute fare.

Lyrics will be a little more difficult, since the heart of the game is karaoke. If 20th opts to transfer the primetime version to syndication, you'll likely see carryover contestants and, at most, 6-7 songs per show. But I have a feeling 20th would prefer to have "standalone" episodes similar to 5th Grader — i.e. one contestant per show — so they can cherry pick what order the episodes will air.

This show is not a game show, it's essentially a karaoke contest.

  • insaneben says:

    Excited? More like disappointed.

I was hoping for some fresh, original game shows NOT hosted by stand-up comedians or "Access Hollywood" rejects.
I was hoping that Hasbro Channel's "The HUB" would be a refuge for game show fans from the ongoing dismantling of GSN.
I was hoping that there would be word that "The $1,000,000 Pyramid" was being picked up by CBS or ABC.
I was hoping that GSN would be returning to its' roots after "Unstapled" proved to be an unmitigated disaster.
And I was hoping that the dark skies for game show fans had finally cleared up.

So far, none of those things have happened (even though the fourth thing is still pending). It looks like the dark reign will be continuing for quite some time for game show fans.

This is an example of taking game shows too seriously, and coming from me that's really hard to imagine. It's TELEVISION. We actually don't even need it at all to live.

To insaneben: Life is full of disappointments. We live with it and move on. But enough with the Brady Bunch moment (of course you know I’m messing with you), I was hoping for something original like the Cube, but this is better. As for Pyramid or any game show being on ABC, try not to hold your breath too long because the suits at ABC said that they’re keeping their schedule the way it is. Now that’s not to say that they’re not entertaining the idea of airing one, there are rumors floating that The View could go into syndication in 2011 after Oprah ends her show.

Sorry, it's a game show. I don't remotely know how you can say it's not. That's beyond silly.

@ Alex: Let’s hope so. Maybe they will give GSN a run for their money.

  • @palmercomm says:

OK, maybe I'm wrong, Alex. I should say that about "The Singing Bee", not "Don't Forget the Lyrics". DFTL actually requires some skill and is exciting. It's just not what I would like to see in a syndicated game show. I'd much rather start up a revival of a decent show, such as "Greed" or something along those lines.

insaneben: If you read the post from September 25, 2010, about Hasbro/Discovery Kids rebranding. It's said it wasn't going to be a full GSN, but there will be quite a few on there. Bob Boden is the head of game and reality show development for Hasbro Studios. Also, I wanted to let you know, that I would love to see game shows not hosted by stand-up comedians or Access Hollywood rejects. I'd love to see maybe radio personalities host game shows again. That's why I am getting into broadcasting.

Top prize actually $50,000, no live band either. Coming from someone who will be on the show when it airs. Kinda lame.
