Last night was a hero themed episode because of the Heroes season finale which was pretty sweet if you watched it. Real life hero Wesley Autrey, Sr., saved a man who fell on the tracks in a New York subway station by placing him between the tracks and laying over top of him as trains went over. I’m not usually a fan of stunts and stunt casting, but this is one I was happy about; he deserved it. He was invited to play the game and try for $1,000,000. To preface this, we haven’t had a $100,000 win, which is rather average for this show, since April 23rd and we haven’t had a big win of more than $200,000 since March 5th by our stats. Can he break the streak? Read below for the results + commentary. Please tell us what you thought about his game. FYI: Deal or No Deal season finale is June 18th.
Case Chosen: 7
Round 1: 6 Cases to open
3: $200,000
17: $200
24: $100
13: $400,000
23: $100,000
11: $300
The banker respects Wesley as a hero, but he said that he’s going to play hard (with the money).
Banker’s offer: $23,000!
Before Howie even asks the question and the number of cases he needs to open if he rejects the deal, Wesley says…
NO DEAL!
Round 2: 5 Cases to open
26: $400
5: $500,000
18: $300,000
1: $75,000
9: $75
Apparently, Wesley thought the banker’s offer was going down. Howie told him that he was wrong…
Banker’s offer: $33,000!
NO DEAL!
Round 3: 4 Cases to open
6: $500
2: $1,000
10: $750,000 The highest and most reliable safety net goes, leaving virtually a one-case game at this point, with a massive gap between the Million and next highest prize of $50,000
12: $750
The banker shows his hero…and it shows a clip of a very recent episode where the contestant, Julie Lamera won just $1 for the lowest ever win in DoND history.
Banker’s offer: $41,000!
NO DEAL!
Round 4: 3 Cases to open
21: $1
15: $25,000
25: $5
Banker’s offer: $65,000!
NO DEAL!
Round 5: 2 Cases to open
20: $5,000
16: $10
The Final 6 Cases
- $0.01
- $25
- $50
- $10,000
- $50,000
- $1,000,000
Banker’s offer: $96,000!
NO DEAL!
Round 6: 1 Case to open
4: $50
Banker’s offer: $148,000!!!
NO DEAL!
Round 7: 1 Case to open
19: $50,000 Safety net gone, truly a one-case game now
Banker’s offer: $209,000!!!
NO DEAL!
Round 8: 1 Case to open
8: $0.01!
The One Cent club remains empty, with the Million still in play!
Banker’s offer: $305,000!!!
NO DEAL!
Round 9: 1 Case to open
14: $1,000,000!!!
Massive collapse of the game!
Banker’s offer: $5,000
NO DEAL!
Howie offers Wesley a chance to switch cases, which Wesley quickly declines.
Howie now opens his case #7 to reveal…
7: $25
Laura opens her case #22 to complete the game…
22: $10,000
At the end of the game, Howie reveals that Daimler-Chrysler has awarded Wesley a brand new Patriot Jeep for his heroism. He was getting the car regardless of outcome. This also does not count towards stats.
Game Summary:
Peak offer: $305,000
Case value: $25
Prize won: $25 (and a brand new Patriot Jeep)
Quite simply: What the hell was he thinking? He has NO safety net, and he turned away $305,000? Even with prior offers, he had to be insane. I did feel bad for him because I wanted him to win after what he has done, but this was just without reason. It just blew my mind. Did anyone think he was justified to turn this down at all?

He might be a hero in real life, but on Deal or No Deal, he showed how incredibly stupid he was. He got exactly what he deserved, sans the car, which he will probably be paying taxes on for the rest of his natural life.

Well, he did say “he came with nothing”, so if he leaves with nothing, nothing lost, and other than that, he’s a national hero. He played the game all the way through to the end, which can’t be said for many players on the show. Deal or No Deal is all about taking chances, and the outcome could be good or bad. There is no wrong decision in the game, because it’s all a 50/50 shot of turning out good or bad.

I agree with both of you. He was kind of greedy, but at the same time you have to go all the way to $1,000,000. Go showing.

For the first time in a long time on DoND, there was actually a contestant who wasn’t a over-hyper-active person. This dude was cool and calm and with what he did, i really hoped he would be the first millionaire. But after the last commercial break last night, i looked at the time and noticed there were 5 minutes left and I realized, he ain’t gonna win the million. He was going to pick the $1,000,000 case and I was right. If he did have the million in #7, there would have been more time left in the show because there would be a huge celebration possibly confetti and balloons falling down from the rafters, a long speech/interview.
Think about Laura from the UK edition when she won the top prize, there was extra time in the end. This is a hint and a half that you can tell when the million will be won. If ever…

For once this episode featured a contestant that didn’t go overboard with the emotion, but at least he wasn’t a brick in the wall. This is the first DoND episode in a long time where I was actually rooting for the contestant.

Well, look on the bright side. He did end up with a nice car, unfortuately, the $25 that he won will only give him 1/4 tank of gas, with prices the way they are… LOL

It’s a shame how gas prices are going through the roof.

It’s nice that he was given the jeep. However, he may have to sell it to pay the tax.

Part of me was really mad at him and his family for passing up $305,000 almost like it was nothing. the man said he makes $1200 a week. That’s about…what…$60K a year? So he’s looking at 2 1/2 or 3 years salary after taxes. I just don’t think that Wesley was taking the Banker seriously, and that irritated me.
Another part of me thought that I was seeing the basic difference between myself and most DoND contestants. They are risk-takers. I (generally) am not. I still get impressed when I see a six-figure bank offer. They turn them down almost immediately. I think about how low the offer will go if I were to pick a big case. They think about how high the offer will get if they pick a low one. Wesley mentioned that if he picked a low case, like he would 67% of the time (people forget that), he would be looking at half-a-mil, easy. And if he had done just that, then everyone here would be calling him brave and courageous. 20/20 hindsight. Then I think to myself that if I am to see someone hit the million, they’ll have to give up the aforementioned half-mil for the chance to win it, and I still think that no one will do it.

If I had an offer worth at least $250K and I didn’t have a “safety net”, I’d take the Deal.

I was yelling last nite “WHERE THE HELL is the deal button, let me hit it for you”, and then he closed it like it was nothing…. I was like, uh oh, I can see the writing on the wall!

Yeah, always hit the “Deal” button whenever you see a decent 6-figure Deal. If you don’t have a safety net, it’s “Deal” time. I’ll even make up a song.
(to the tune of “Welcome to Miller Time”)
Welcome to Deal Time!
Now it’s here, it’s yours and mine.
Bring your greedy self right here,
You’ve got the time, we’ve got the deal.
It’s what you had in mind.
So, welcome to Deal Time!
Yours and mine!

With regard to CarShark: actually I think it’ll be a game more lke Anita’s that produces any million-dollar win. Note that the very near miss before (albeit in a $6m game) came with the $750k in play right to the bitter end too. The final offer was above the mean, but was still turned down because at that point most people - Michelle included - just couldn’t care less.
Put Wesley on Anita’s board, but with the million in the case… no wait. Just give Wesley the million in his case and he’d have won it.
Donald is too right about the way the jackpot wins are handled. In fact, for our £250k win, the show was extended to 55 minutes, which was a giveaway to anyone who had somehow missed the spoilers in the print media and the web prior to transmission (I for one did not, but I watched it with someone who hadn’t heard the spoilers, and she saw it coming from offer four. She’s not seen an episode since…)

I watch this Game Show all the time on NBC and CNBC, and I can’t believe how wild a lot of the contestants have been this season especially all the goofy moments and no one has hardly gotten close to like $500,000, 600,000, and $700,000 since last season, most of them this season have won like over $100,000 and below that, one thing I’d like to know is, everytime I watch this Game Show, “How old are all those girls and who is the youngest and oldest?” they are so young and I don’t even know all 26 of their names, I don’t keep track but there’s like three more making it 29 and I don’t know their names either, but I’ve noticed one girl who has case #24, [not the one who is on now] hasn’t been on for several weeks and about two or three months, “Whatever happened to her, did she already leave or something?” I think Howie Mandel does a good job hosting this Game Show and I remember him from his days as Dr. Wayne Fiscus on (St. Elsewhere) NBC 1982-1988, and I never thought he would make it as a Game Show host but he sure surprised me, This show is WAY better than garbage like (Fear Factor) and (Survivor) as well as the rest of the reality trash, I haven’t seen every episode of (Deal Or No Deal), but I’ve watched a lot of episodes this season, when it premiered in late 2005 to May or June 2006, I didn’t understand it and I didn’t know what it was but now I do, when I watched it on Monday, I was really hoping Wesley Autry would finally be the first player to win The $1,000,000 and guess what, he picked case #14 and failed, I felt so bad for him especially what he went through and I respected him as a hero, I hated to see him leave with just $25, not good.

I’m thinking he may not have to pay taxes on the car becuase it was a gift from Chrysler or they may be paying the taxes for him.
Idea for a sweeps week: Deal or No Deal: Tax free week. All the winners receive winnings tax free i.e. NBC or Endemol pays it for them. and just for fun you could have an IRS person in the box with the banker.
Getting back to the game. What a shame. he should ahve stopped with $305,000 I actually surprised he even turned down the $167,000 (i think). His Poor wife she damn near fainted when the $1m got knocked out. The ending kind of reminded me of Trevor Bruce’s game on the uk deal. For those, who haven’t seen it his board had 1p, 50 pounds, 100 pounds, 250 pounds and 250,000 pounds and he turned down a dismal offer of 9,900 pounds and lost the 250,000. The game when dead silent for about 1 minute. and the lady who opened the 250,000 was in tears. Trevor left btw with 1p.

Yeah, that’s a great idea! You could run a special tax-free week during Tax-Free Weekend! You might also ruin our economy.

i applaud you, wesley!
(except for picking 14 when your family was saying 22! ECHOES OF RENEE STOKES!
the first INTERESTING show in weeks!
with that kind of board, inevitably the answer is DEAL, and it’s so B-O-R-I-N-G! almost not worth watching!
124 out of 144 people have dealt. COWARDS!

I like that sweeps week idea, though didn’t Millionaire do it as well? It’d be rather nice though, changes the game without actually changing anything if you get my drift.
(He says, coming from a country where game show prizes aren’t taxed anyway.)
And there’s absolutely no Trevor Bruce comparison here. Not in gameplay anyway, Trevor got hosed with a truly spectacularly low offer. Though in terms of pain, probably is comparable, and I think that’s what Marc meant actually.

I have to admit; I was almost to tears when the $1,000,000 was opened. This guy was the ideal Deal or No Deal contestant: He took big risks in order to win big money. He had a great story, a great personality, and guts of steel. Sorry it didn’t work out for him.

Will there ever be a DOND episode (probably in the 2007-2008 season) where someone goes all the way and finally wins $1,000,000 and not 1 cent? The lowest anyone won all the way in the chosen case was $1!

Okay guys. The show is built on greed, persona, and a few minutes of fame. The first 30 minutes was entertaining, but fell when Wesley threw away 6 digit dollars. It would have been nice for him to get the $1 M, but greed simply outweighed sensibility. So we have clips of fainting people. Actually I was laughing. The Banker wins again! I want to be the Banker for an episode and get half his salary for the job. That may be more fun than playing the game.
Greg

Unless they fix the show (and start another round of the “quiz show scandals”), that may never happen. This show is based on luck, not skill. It all depends on the luck of the case.

Hey, that sounds like a great idea! Let one unlucky contestant play the “Banker” for a game and collect whatever “Deals” the player turns down. (However, each “Deal” has to be the average of all values left on the board. That way, the “Banker” can’t make ridiculously high “Deals”.)
