Good news and bad news about Deal or No Deal on December 12th. Let’s start with the bad news.
Bad News: Deal or No Deal is adding a new gimmick.
Good News: It’s actually good, at least I think!
Starting on December 12th, NBC’s Deal or No Deal is adding “The Deal Wheel”, which you can see in the picture. Speaking of the picture, does Howie look like a cartoon or computer graphic, or is it just me?
This works exponentially better than Double or Nothing, as this gives you a chance to double, triple, or halve your money. It’s a bit sketchy right now, but it seems that you have the option to play “The Deal Wheel” after you take a deal or get the value in your case. You drop a ball down a huge ramp, looking much like a Plinko board, before it hits the wheel. In there is essentially a roulette wheel. The spaces alternate “1/2″ or “x2″. Five of the “x2″ spaces are “x3″, meaning your money is tripled. You only risk half of your money to potentially triple it, or at least double it in a 50/50 chance. Seems like a pretty cool gimmick which can definitely work and is worth a risk, unlike Double or Nothing. What do you all think? I haven’t watched Deal or No Deal in ages, but I think it might be worth it for this.

much better gimmick, one $350,000 win and that could mean a $1,000,000 win and they would be willing to risk $175,000 I’m sure. 1 0 space would mak eit interesting though.

I agree, this definitely sounds more respectable than any of the other Deal gimmicks to me, but it also smells of desperation.
Is NBC trying all these new things just to keep things new and different every other show? Are they trying to experiment with different concepts that they hope will work to keep viewers watching primetime when the show goes syndie next year? Are they just trying marketing tactics to try to grab every last person they can, since the show’s ratings are down and they’re trying to improve them?
Or, is it all of the above? If I had just won big on DoND, this offer would’ve been a lot more intriguing then the SUPER BRIEFCASE “double or nothing” idea, and I could easily see myself going for it, especially with the chance to triple my winnings. At least here, I know I’ll still be walking away with something substantial. We may actually get to see some decent TV coming out of this… :o
Oh, and to bring up an old thought of mine, WHAT IS IT with game shows and big wheels? Why doesn’t Jeopardy just get it out of the way and have a big wheel to determine the category for Final Jeopardy, it’s long overdue… ;)
And yes, of course, I’m just kidding with that last comment.

This is a great idea. They should of did this from the start in replace of the stupid “million dollar mission”.

The Deal Wheel. Sounds similar to the wheel used on Powerball.

I am doing a project for my Junior Core class on trying to connect greed to madness. My theory is that such a connection exists because of three aspects of the given game:
1. Simplicity
2. Exponentiality
3. Aesthetics
As far as DoND goes, the premise is simple: Pick numbers and hope to win a bunch of money.
The exponentaility comes with this new Deal Wheel. For example: which would you rather have:
5000 bricks of latinum
3,000,000 dollars
500,000,000 yen
With aesthetics, it’s obvious with the colors, the models, and the graphics.
So, do we go insane trying to go for pretty and simple dollars with lots of zeroes in the figure?

Why not just play Let’s Make a Deal?

The Deal Wheel sounds pretty cool. I am looking forward to seeing it. I believe it is going to be good. I am hoping that someone wins over $1,000,000 on the wheel. That would be something to see.

To Alex: Howie DOES a little computer-graphicky to me…but then, if you look closely, is that really the only way they get the ball to float in his hands? I dunno.
But yeah, I think this is a MUCH better idea than the ol’ Double or Nothing they pulled on us some time ago. It’ll probably make me want to pop in and take a look out of curiosity…

Sounds pretty sweet. I’ll watch it!
More importantly, have we already discussed 1 VS 100 coming back January 11th? I might have missed it, but my excitement is still pretty substantial. It’s going to be a good January for game shows. American Gladiators & Bob Saget? Heavenly…

Now THIS is a good idea! Someone could actually win a million (or more) if they win a big bank offer or case, and go for it. And no matter what, you still leave with something.
Honestly, this is a better way to potentially get a Million dollar winner, rather than the “Mission.”

I’m not to sure about this. Part of me thinks this is great but part of me thinks this will give NBC an even bigger excuse to get the cherry picker out.

I could see this working, actually. At the very least, it’ll get me watching again.
Let’s say someone has a very bad game and is lucky to get an offer of around 20-30k down the stretch…they take it, and they risk half to spin…they could still get a real nice payout. At the very least, they’d still have a low 5-figure payout (well, 4-figure after taxes), but they could really redeem themselves with a lucky spin or something to that extent.

I’m not sure what i think of this yet. i will have to watch this. I do know that the ratings are down and my thought is one get rid of the supporters. This could bring a new appeal to the game and get it some ratings back or it could totally crush deal in primetime which i think once a week next year would be fine with me. Yes the ratings are down but it still decent and better than the ratings to some of NBC other shows. It does better on friday in that timeslot than most shows. Deal or 1 Vs 100 on fridays is the best shows to put in the 8/7 central time slot.
