Big Edit: Someone from an early taping recently commented, and there are a few differences in the rules for them. Did they switch rules after a few weeks? You be the judge; click here.
A source who wished to remain anonymous supplied us with the rules for Merv Griffin’s Crosswords, which debuts Monday, September 10th, across the country. It’s looking pretty good; here they are:
Two contestants start with a full puzzle on the board. They get a clue to one of the words given. The player that buzzes in and answers correctly gets $100. At some points there will be a “Crossword Getaway”, where a right answer adds a trip to your total. Also included is a “Crossword Extra”, where the person who answers correctly can bet as much of their winnings up to that point as they’d like on the next question. This goes on for a bit. Round two adds a new game element: three contestants known as “Spoilers” come in. They also play the game. If a Spoiler gets a question correct, they can take the place of either of the two players and capture all of their money. Answers in round two are $200. Whoever controls the most money at the end of round two is the winner and plays the bonus. In the bonus, contestants have 130 seconds (at least for that episode) to solvethe rest of the puzzle. They call out a placement and get a clue.
Sadly this is where our information ends. On the episode we were told about, we’re assuming there was no bonus round win since the total for the champion was rather low; around GSN level low. We’re also guessing that the 130 seconds isn’t static, as that’s just a really bizarre number. But there you have it. It sounds very enjoyable, fast paced, exciting, and we’re hearing the feel is laid back. The only real issue I have is how easy it is for a spoiler to take all of a player’s money, especially on such a non-cut throat show. However, that’s a minor annoyance. Everything else seems terrific. Be sure to look for it in syndication on September 10th. Hopefully we’ll be getting some reports on Temptation and The Price is Right for you soon.

“Crossword Extra” = Daily Double, maybe?
The bonus round reminds me a bit of the British “Sudo-Q”, except (hopefully) for a lot more money. And speaking of more money, couldn’t they up the budget a bit, say $250 per word in round one and $500 in round two?

I taped an early episode. The rules you posted seemed mostly right, but the people on my tape date had a few differences.
1) It is true that a spoiler who solves a puzzle captures the money of one of the two main players. The way it works is that a correctly solved clue deposits money at the podium of the correct solver. There are two podiums that collect money, an important detail in understanding (and playing!) the game.
2) The dollar amount won at the podium is related to the round number and the number of letters in the answer. I do not remember exactly what the dollar amounts were, but the amount won was not a static $100 or $200 dollars. Sensibly, Round 2 and 3 answers pay more than Round 1 answers, and clues with more letters are worth more than those with clues with fewer letters.
3) There are three rounds before the bonus round, but Rounds 2 and 3 are not really all that different. The only difference between them is whether a clue that wins a trip (a “Crossword Getaway”) will show up in the round. The person standing at the podium with the highest dollar amount at the end of Round 3 goes on to play the bonus round. Prizes (for us, trips to locales nearby or in Southern California) do NOT count toward the dollar amount at the podium.
4) The number of seconds in the bonus round was not 130 seconds. It was 90 seconds, I believe. I think perhaps your source meant to write 1:30, not 130.
5) The dollar amounts won are generally in the couple of thousands. My guess is that it will average around $3,000 total (ignoring trips won and including the bonus round). The bonus round is for $2,000 and a trip to an exotic destination, e.g., Puerto Vallarta, Antigua, etc and will have a solve rate of about 50%. This implies the average won at the end of round 3 will be about $2,000. Keep in mind that money is gathered at two podiums, not one, but only the person at the podium with the highest amount of money actually wins any money or prizes.
6) There are some arcane rules about the order in which contestants can attempt to answer a clue. The rules are logical, but would require a bit of time to explain. Just be aware that when watching, you might wonder who gets to answer when, but this should be clear from a graphical display.

Well, this game sounds solid all around. But, what about returning champions? Temptation will have them, will Crosswords have them, too?

There will be no returning champions for the first season.

So, if the show is a hit, they’ll consider having them in the future? I ask this because in the past there have been shows that didn’t have returning champs at first, but as the show progressed and increased in popularity, it was added to give the show an added dimension of excitement.

Round One of the show seems decent to me, but I’m wondering a bit about round two. I know it’ll air on NBC 6 in Miami at 4pm and FOX 29 in West Palm Beach at TBA, but I can’t wait to see if Temptations will be identical to the Aussie version OR if Fremantle will not only favor Australia but make the US version crap. I hope they don’t.
Anyway, in Miami, it’s on WSVN-7, the station that interrupts everything. Anybody know what station in West Palm will air Tamptations?

Intelligentfan777: What you just wrote is the impression I was given by the staff of the show.
Adam: Round 1 is like a traditional game show, but Round 2 is a lot more exciting than round 1, even if it does differ from traditional offerings. It adds a cuthroat element that you’d think you might see when watching a close Jeopardy! match, but you don’t, because everyone’s got a stick stuck up somewhere. :) It’s more “relaxed,” but with more competition. In other words, “Crosswords” is hard to explain. :)

Here in Los Angeles, it will air on KNBC (channel 4) at 3:00 and 3:30 PM. It’s up against the season opener of Oprah on Sept. 10.
