The finale of Channel 4′s weeklong event game show The Bank Job aired this Saturday and came with a big twist. All other nights four contestants were narrowed to one, who went into the finale with the money they took from the vault. However, for the Saturday finale, two winners were crowned. A jackpot of £467,500 was available. How did they determine how the money was going to be given away? The classic Prisoner’s Dilema was brought back. British readers may know it as Share or Shaft. Americans may know it as Friend or Foe. Regardless, it asked the same question: could you steal a total of over £460,000 from a person standing inches away from you. For an American perspective, this is over $700,000.

Take a look at how it went below. I think that the Friend or Foe decision at the end came out of no where and felt tacked on to just do something with the two people left in the game, but it’s impossible to argue it was exciting. Each contestant has two cases…Cash or Trash. They’ll exchange cases. If both give each other cash, they split £467,500 and take home half each (over $350,000). If one gives Cash and the other Trash, the person who got the Cash will take home the entire £467,500 and the person who got Trash gets nothing. However, if both give Trash, neither gets a thing and the three losers from the day split the prize, each receiving over £150,000. What happened? You’ll be holding your breath.

Video courtesy Channel 4 and Endemol.

So I do have issues with it, but was that exciting or what? The Bank Job had some issues, but most of it was due to the unnecessary decision to air the show live as opposed to taping it and ironing out some of the major kinks that severely hurt the show earlier in the week. It wasn’t bad, though, and I definitely wouldn’t mind seeing some new episodes.

Could you have done what they did? I couldn’t.

We’ve got another big quiz show coming to television soon. ITV is debuting their newest, the memory-infused quiz The Exit List, on Tuesday, January 10th, at 8:00PM UK (3:00PM ET). The Exit List, hosted by Matt Allwright, puts two people into a maze. Each room is filled with cash, but each new room they enter adds more items to the “Exit List”, which they must recite to win their bank. One room at the end is worth a big £100,000 for teams smart and brave enough to go that far. The show reached out to us with some pictures of the set that can only be described as incredible, a video preview of the show, plus what host Matt Allwright thinks about his upcoming gig.

The format is interesting because there’s really no set place you have to leave. You can beat room one, win £1,000, and rattle off that one answer to win a quick grand. Matt says that’s yet to happen and that the contestants are a lot braver than you may imagine. “It’s all in the contestants hands. If they want to take home a thousand pounds after answering one question, they can. But none of them do, thank goodness, and we’ve gone to on have some thrilling games with some big wins.” He continues, “I have the time of my life presenting The Exit List. What could be more fun than finding really nice, funny people, and trying to give them enough to pay off their mortgage, or start a home together?”

First off, take a look at the preview of the show. You’ll get the idea of how the show goes, plus a look at the set and more.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Look at the set and show in even more detail with the pictures in this gallery below. That, frankly, may be the coolest looking set I’ve ever seen. Amazing looking. Matt agrees, saying, “The stage is incredible. It’s built at the George Lucas stage at Elstree Studios, and coincidentally, it feels just like standing on the bridge of the Death Star.”

The Bank Job is coming January 2nd to Channel 4, and the George Lamb hosted quiz show is gearing up with some interesting ways to expose the show. First off, though, the online game hit a nice milestone. The game which allows you to get on the show, which can be played by anyone in the world by clicking here, has reached over two million plays. The online version has been played by over 110,000 people in the UK alone. In fact, one woman from Scotland played a remarkable 500+ games in just one week. That comes to playing for almost 26 hours across the week. That’s dedication. And that’s someone wanting to get on the show to win huge cash.

Channel 4 is trying to bring some more exposure to The Bank Job with a series of projections across London. Throughout the city a projected “bank job” was pulled on several different buildings. It features a vault being blown open with hundreds of thousands of pounds flying out before displaying the show’s motto, “Get Rich and Get Out,” followed by the show’s Twitter information. With Christmas shoppers around everywhere it’s a smart idea and something very different. I’ve not seen it done for a game show before. Take a look below.

NBC is debuting their newest quiz show Who’s Still Standing?, based on the Israeli format Still Standing, next Monday (December 19th) at 8:00PM ET. The show is a head-to-head trivia competition between a Hero and ten strangers, each of which (s)he faces one at a time. Beating all ten wins $1,000,000. We’ve covered the foreign versions rather extensively and given you lots of coverage of NBC’s version, so you know most of what’s to know about it. However, how about seeing it? We’ve got your very first look into the game play of the Ben Bailey hosted quiz show. If anything, it’s leaving me slightly worried, though.

Here’s two rounds of play, courtesy NBC.

[stream provider=video flv=x:/flashgameshows.com/wordpress/videos/wssgamepreview1.flv img=x:/flashgameshows.com/wordpress/wp-content/pics/wssgamepreview1.jpg mp4=x:/flashgameshows.com/wordpress/videos/wssgamepreview1.mp4 embed=true share=true width=540 height=304 dock=true controlbar=over bandwidth=high autostart=false /]

[stream provider=video flv=x:/flashgameshows.com/wordpress/videos/wssgamepreview2.flv img=x:/flashgameshows.com/wordpress/wp-content/pics/wssgamepreview2.jpg mp4=x:/flashgameshows.com/wordpress/videos/wssgamepreview2.mp4 embed=true share=true width=540 height=304 dock=true controlbar=over bandwidth=high autostart=false /]

GSN had the same issue with Lingo and I’ll repeat it here. When you want to show off a new, exciting show to the press, why would you not lead with your best foot forward? Why would you send clips of two people not knowing very elementary pop culture questions? The first guy could not get the simple concept of a month with the letter P in it, and regardless he refused to rattle off all the months. I really hope the show perks up and gets slightly tougher and more exciting in later rounds. This was maddening and if I have to sit through hours of people like this, I’ll switch it off. And so will most of America.

My only other pet peeve is you can easily see the fingerprints of Minute to Win It all over Who’s Still Standing?. It’s got the same producers, and most of the same production tactics are carried over. I know this sounds nerdy and petty, but that’s what we’re here for. I don’t see why these producers are so opposed to a regular, normal game show introduction and a regular, normal soundtrack. I’m not asking for anything mind blowing. But for some reason this crew decides every one of their shows needs some over the top, nearly parody-like music or a reconstituted pop song playing at all times. Is it really too much to have just a normal package? It can still be strange and different, but something resembling the genre? Millionaire somehow managed to update their stuff to fit 2011 and be new, and be familiar. I don’t get the thought process behind this. Again, petty, but oh well.

Beyond that, though, it does what it sets out to do. Again, the show is basically the Killer Questions end game of Russian Roulette stretched to an hour and it works. It’s not the most thrilling thing ever and Russian Roulette still holds the honor of best drop-based game show, which is an increasing crowd recently, but it’s far better than most of NBC’s recent efforts and certainly a better full package than ABC’s You Deserve It. It looks nice, plays nice, it’s got great play-along, and Ben Bailey is great as host. I really don’t know if America will connect with it, and those game previews supplied to us doesn’t fill me with optimism, but I’m hoping it does OK. We don’t get relatively fast paced quiz shows much anymore.

Since January, Deal or No Deal has been extended from 45 minutes to 60 minutes. Meaning an extra 15 minutes to fit in more banter between Noel and the 22 contestants and more time to see the contestants decide whether to deal the offers or not. An episode shown last month was a classic example where if it was shown last year it would’ve been on the cutting room floor. As you will see from the clip below. Noel receives a phone call from The Banker where he received a complaint from one of the contestants. What happens next is somethng that doesn’t happen on a game show.

To celebrate the return of The Cube this evening, we have a special treat. When game shows become popular, other shows make fun of it. The Cube has seen Harry Hill calling it The Cuboid as it doesn’t look like a cube when seen on television. While BBC Radio 1 DJ, Greg James has created The Square. Which even featured a contestant called Philip Schofield.

Comedy duo Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer have been running the celebrity quiz Shooting Stars for many years. With the show being off air in the early 2000s. It was brought back in 2009. The latest series featured their take on The Cube where Jake Wood from Eastenders tries to win the star prize. Can he throw a severed head into a bucket? It might sound so simple but nothing is simple in The Cube.

ITV’s popular daytime quiz show, The Chase ends their fourth series today with the launch of the celebrity version airing on Saturday evenings from tomorrow. The new series introduces a brand new fourth chaser, Paul Sinha.

Nicknamed The Sinnerman, he joins the ranks of the original three Chasers. Mark Labbett, Shaun Wallace and Anne Hegerty. Like Anne, Paul is more known with his quizzing ability at professional quizzing events than appearing on numerous television game and quiz shows. In the last few years, Paul appeared on Mastermind and on the second series of Are You an Egghead? where he was defeated in the first round. Although he has passion for quizzing. Paul is also a stand up comedian and regularly performs at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the occasional gig. You might have heard his voice on the odd panel show on BBC Radio. If you want to know more about the man in the white suit you can visit his offical website at http://www.paulsinha.com He also writes a blog where his latest entry discusses about his debut on The Chase http://sinhaha.wordpress.com/

The clips we are featuring include a regular chase between contestant Ben and Paul. Followed by the Final Chase.

It has been an eventful seven days over the pond in the UK. This week had the second week of Deal or No Deal live with all games being broadcast live on Channel 4. There have also been straight faces and and high risks The Chase.

First we have Sunday’s Deal or No Deal Live which featured contestant Kevin. The live shows are played the same as the recorded shows with some differences. The box openers are a mixture of friends and family for that player and former contestants from past shows. With some who played their show as far back as 2006. The live specials also had special guests who opened their box. Namely, McFly’s Tom Fletcher and Harry Potter star Oliver Phelps. Since the show is done live, a clock is used to indicate how much time they have to complete their game. We pick up the action at the five box stage.

Next we have The Chase. The latest series has produced many records, amusing questions and with a new Chaser as well. We will feature more on The Sinnerman over the weekend. Monday’s episode featured a question asking a certain sportswoman. As you will see below, Bradley Walsh and Anne Hegerty tried to keep a straight face.

While on the subject of records. Wednesday’s episode produced another record for the show. Adam is the final contestant and faces The Beast.

As an added bonus this weekend I deliver you an extra UK Weekend Replay. For those who know about US game shows in general, that the panel show is currently an endangered species. Where there were loads of shows in the 60s, 70s and 80s. There are hardly any panel shows airing on US television in the 21st Century. However, the panel show continues to dominate UK networks with many shows airing on television and radio every week.

One panel show currently doing the rounds is BBC One’s Would I Lie to You? Created by Endemol, the show features two teams of three celebrities. Both featuring a regular team captain (comedians Lee Mack and David Mitchell from Mitchell & Webb). Hosted by welsh comedian, Rob Brydon. The celebrities read out statements from cards with the opposing team deciding whether the statements are true or they are actually a lie. None of the celebrites and Rob know what are written on the cards. The show also features a mystery guest round where he or she has a connection to one of the celebrites.

The first clip is from the first round where two team members reads their respective cards. It features The Apprentice’s Nick Hewer and comedian Jack Whitehall. The other celebrites on the show are Rebecca Front and Miranda Hart.

The second clip is from the final round where it’s identical to the first round but it’s done against the clock and the celebries are selected at random. Even Rob can be chosen at random to read out a statement.
