GSN Launches a “That’s The Question” Mini Game

Hey, everyone! We’re back. Things went fantastic in New York City and I hope to tell you more soon but I’d rather remain quiet about it for a bit longer. Thanks for all your positive messages and comments, I really appreciate it. But this is a site for game show opinions, so we’re back to it.  Be sure to keep communicating, though.  I assure you, some pretty important people read what you have to say and value it.

It’s no secret around here that I’m a huge fan of GSN’s original show That’s The Question now in its second season.  One thing I’ve always wondered is how difficult it is to play with the intense speed and pressure.  It’s something host Bob Goen and I discussed before.  GSN is now letting you discover how tough and fun it is with a new mini-game which you can play by clicking here.

The online game works exactly the same way the show does.  Stop the randomizer and answer questions.  The extra letter goes into the puzzle.  Solve the puzzle when you know it for some extra points.  After two rounds your points are converted to seconds to solve the final puzzle.  It’s a fantastic game and the perfect compliment to a fantastic show.

The game even addresses one issue I have with the show.  There’s really no incentive to rattle off the question for a while as you don’t gain that many points.  On the online game you get a point per letter not placed in the question when you solve it.  That’s a pretty good fix to that problem if you ask me.

Interview: Bob Goen

I attempt to praise That’s the Question, GSN’s highly addictive quiz show, every chance I get at BuzzerBlog. Naturally I jumped on the opportunity to interview host Bob Goen. If you aren’t aware, he’s hosted other hit shows such as Wheel of Fortune and Entertainment Tonight. In the interview he discusses how he calms viewers, his dream hosting job, and how to bring excitement into cheap shows such as his edition of Wheel of Fortune and his current show. THE INTERVIEW CAN BE LISTENED TO BY CLICKING HERE.

And I do apologize for the few “uhs”, as I try to cut those out.  This was done early in the morning so my brain was still thawing.

“That’s The Question” Review: One of the better originals

The new season of That’s The Question was going to be interesting to say the least. If you saw the first twenty episodes you may know there were a few, uh, issues. The set was odd, music and sound effects were god awful, the writing was poor, too many factual errors, the show felt like it was missing something, and the show was horribly cheap. I was a fan of season one, but there was some fear for season two. Nothing against GSN, but recently they haven’t exactly had the greatest track record for originals. A huge sigh of relief came when I found that they fixed 75% of the issues.

We already saw pictures of the set, and it is extremely nice; one of the best ones GSN has put together. It’s not a Millionaire clone like Chain Reaction and it doesn’t feel like the set is five feet wide like Camouflage. Luckily they fixed the spelling and factual errors. It’s also nice to see that the show has more than pop culture questions which has become a trend recently. Host Bob Goen (Who we will have an interview with next week, stay tuned) is as good as ever, which is very good. He’s honestly the channel’s best host currently. The music is a bit better this season if not a bit too upbeat to a level of almost the first two seasons of Lingo. The main reason I enjoy it is because it’s something we have very few of anymore: a fast paced buzzer quiz show with two people competing against each other.

Now for a few issues. I think I’ve said it about 50 times, but every time I still hope I can give some hint to a production company or to GSN: do we always need easy to win bonus rounds for $5,000? Can’t we have a tiny bit of originality? The Dutch version has interesting rules. When you win the bonus you have the option to gamble your money and come back next show or stop. If you come back and lose the game, you lose all your money. However, if you come back and win, you double your money and you can be on three shows max. What is it with GSN and refusing to do returning champs? They air episodes in order, so come on. The only other issue I have is that the game can be a bit repetitive after a bit. Some sort of change mid-show, like a bonus puzzle or something, would be nice.

Beyond that, it’s easily one of the best shows they’ve done in a while. It’s amazing that they’ve been on an amazing track record recently with shows like Grand Slam, Without Prejudice?, and That’s The Question. It blows Camouflage (Insider FYI: I wouldn’t count on it coming back, as least as of today) out of the water for sure. However, all I ever feel when I’m watching the show is that there is something missing. It’s mainly in the bonus area, but something is missing. Other than that, they improved the show from season one exponentially. Fantastic host, fantastic set, fun game, good contestants (at least for now); other than a few tiny issues which were mentioned above, the show is more enjoyable than most game shows that have come out anywhere recently, and that includes both syndication offerings.

“That’s The Question” Season Two Tonight!

Tonight GSN will begin a new season of their hit trivia show That’s The Question at 9PM ET.  We already went over the new set and logo and all that stuff.  Also, don’t forget there are actual decent writers this season, which makes it thrilling enough.  Obviously this will be waiting until it airs, but what did you think of the show?  I’ll throw my opinions in here later, but I’d love to hear what you all think.  Remember, the new season of That’s The Question is tonight at 9PM ET on GSN.

New Show Opinions

Instead of creating a different post for each show, let’s just do it all in one.

In case you aren’t aware, every game show under the sun starts a new season today.  Wheel of Fortune begins its 25th year celebration, Jeopardy! starts a new one, Family Feud gets a new, nice logo with the same fantastic host of John O’Hurley, Who Wants to be a Millionaire? begins its sixth season on its way to its thousanth show, and finally we have the debut of Crosswords (which is quite good) and Temptation (which isn’t quite good to me).  Don’t forget tomorrow GSN will start a brand new US season of That’s The Question with a nice set and actual writers!  That makes it exponentially better off the bat.  What did you think about all the new shows, changes, and such?  Mainly, what did you think of Crosswords

Official GSN press release for That’s the Question S2

bobgoen.jpg

(Santa Monica, CA) – Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2007 – GSN is bringing THAT’S THE QUESTION back for a second season on Tuesday, September 11. Produced by Scott Sternberg Productions and hosted by Bob Goen (“Entertainment Tonight,” “Miss Universe”), the fast-paced word game will air Tuesday thru Saturdays from 9:00 – 9:30 PM, ET.THAT’S THE QUESTION is a half-hour series that combines word scrambles with a test of world history and pop culture trivia knowledge. Contestants compete against each other in a race to discover a question.

Clues to the question are revealed by unscrambling words that contain one extra letter, which is, upon being unscrambled correctly, dropped into its proper place in the question, a la “Hangman.” The players take turns for the opportunity to unscramble clue words and guess what the question is, while earning valuable points to determine who goes to the final round. In the final round, the winner’s score translates into seconds of time they have to correctly identify a question and its answer. If they are successful, their prize goes from $500 to $5,000.

Widely popular in numerous countries around the globe, THAT’S THE QUESTION is currently setting ratings records in the Netherlands, Switzerland and France.

Goen, who served as host of “Entertainment Tonight” from 1993 to 2004, began his broadcast career as a sportscaster and then made the transition to his life-long dream: hosting game shows. Among his credits are “Wheel of Fortune” and “The Hollywood Game.” He is also known globally from hosting the “Miss Universe,” “Miss USA,” and “Miss Teen USA” pageants.

Widely acknowledged for his success in producing a variety of television genres, Sternberg’s credits include such top-rated hits as “Hollywood Squares,” “Love Connection,” “Rock and Roll Jeopardy,” “The Extreme Gong Show” and “Wheel of Fortune for Kids.” Among his most recent projects are “Square Off,” “Sunday Morning Shootout,” “My First Time” and “Spying on Myself.”

“That’s The Question” Season 2 Set

One issue I have with some of GSN’s originals is the general lack of a decent set.  This can really mainly be blamed on a lack of big bucks like other networks have, but come on.  Chain Reaction looks like a copy of Who Wants to be a Millionaire? and Camouflage had the smallest set I’ve ever seen.  However, That’s The Question might go down as having the best and most useful set since Russian Roulette.  Take a look at some of these thumbnails.  Now that they have a good set and really good writers, I can’t see a reason why this season won’t be short of amazing.  Be on the lookout for the second season of GSN’s amazing That’s That Question on September 11th at 9PM ET on GSN.

“That’s The Question” Renewed + GSN Shows Pride in “Prejudice”

GSN’s relatively popular word game, That’s The Question, is no longer rumored to be renewed for a second season: it has been. The second season will start on September 10th and will air Monday through Friday, states GSN. No word on tape dates or tape location just yet, but more information about the renewal can be found when GSN announces all of their news at the Television Critic’s Association meetings during this week. On That’s The Question, contestants have to answer questions while trying to uncover a question to an answer given. It’s a weird mix of Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune and, to be honest, it’s one of their best shows since the rebranding.

GSN’s had no great luck with original programming recently. Currently, GSN’s highest rated show is High Stakes Poker and that only manages to get a .4. Shows like Chain Reaction and I’ve Got A Secret, while attracting some audience, haven’t exactly caused droves of people to be tuning in. In fact, the last time this happened was back in 2003 with Who Wants to be Governor of California?: The Debating Game. GSN needs a hit badly, and it’s no surprise they are pushing their new original program Without Prejudice? into the limelight more than any show they’ve ever aired. To be exact, they are using a $5,000,000 advertising campaign to get word out about the show and draw eyeballs in. This is 30% more than any for anything else they’ve ever done. What are they using this for exactly? Read on after the break for information courtesy of Multichannel and GSN.

Rumor Control: “That’s The Question” Season 2

This bit of news is a total surprise. According to Total Content & Media and 2waytraffic, GSN has renewed one of my personal new favorite shows, That’s The Question has been renewed for a new series of 65 episodes. The quote in full…

“”That’s The Question”, is also performing well with new deals in Finland, with Game Show Network in the U.S. where it has been re-commissioned for 65 episodes starting this summer and has just begun its first series of 60 episodes in the U.K.”

Now of course this isn’t official until GSN announces something, but it’s looking good. Again, it’s a rumor for now, but I’d be expecting an announcement during the TCAs on July 14th.

Checklist for GSN on this show:
1- Up the payouts maybe a tiny bit?
2- No more spelling or factual errors
3- Add more enthusiasm and excitement into the game
4- Have a nice set with an audience this time
