Instead of making two different posts about shows we don’t know a lot about, why not make one large post putting them together? Two new game shows were recently announced, one for ABC who never seems to give up and one for MTV.
The ABC game show is called Opportunity Knocks which is from both Katalyst and 3 Ball Productions. The show, as Cynopsis tells us, is very similar to the old after show audience game from Let’s Make A Deal. Hosts on the show travel from house to house asking people questions for cash if they give a right answer. ABC ordered 13 episodes which will probably debut in the Fall. We’ve really fully come to an age where two-minute segments on shows are the entire program, haven’t we?
The other show, for MTV, is called The Phone which is being produced by Justin Timberlake and Fremantle who everyone seems to love so much. They are really making sure to call the show “genre-busting”, but it’s basically a stereotypical competition show. Two people pick up phones at different ends of a busy city. They have five seconds to decide to take the challenge, which could net them a large cash prize, or back down. If they accept, the guide on the phone gives them a mission to complete before time runs out. If they do, they win the cash.
Any early thoughts on these? Opportunity Knocks sounds kind of lame, but The Phone sounds interesting, almost The Mole- like to a certain degree.
I’m telling you, we can’t seem to get any new ideas out there that connect with people anymore. But this revival definitely has the potential to be awesome. According to Cynopsis, where we seem to get just about everything, Nick at Nite is bringing back the popular sports competition show GUTS for families under the title My Family’s Got GUTS. No word yet on when this primetime original will see the light of day.
The original ran from 1992 to 1995 on Nickelodeon and was hosted by sitcom actor Mike O’Malley and refereed by Moira Quirk. If you haven’t seen it, the show can basically be described as a kids version of American Gladiators of sorts. Three kids went against each other in physical games to see which one would have the most points and win for the day. It was a pretty cool show for its time and really still held up very nicely in reruns ten years later. Let’s see how Nick at Night revives this one.
Just as in movies, it seems game shows are being taken over by revivals today. Password is coming back soon, GSN has a revival of sorts of Gambit, TBS has Match Game, we have The Newlywed Game and The Dating Game from Embassy Row, there’s a few more in the wings, and now we can add another to the list. Cynopsis announced that Comedy Central has revived The Gong Show, a popular 70’s variety/game show, and is currently casting.
The old version was hosted by Chuck Barris and featured some bizarre and impressive acts trying to avoid getting the “Gong” from a celebrity panel who just had enough of an act. The show was revived by GSN ages ago in the form called Extreme Gong, hosted by the fantastic George Gray. In that version, people at home could call in and say when they had enough of an act. I also seem to remember something called the “Dame of the Game”, but who knows. I was probably too distracted by the dame to remember. This version will be hosted by Dave Attell of the former popular Comedy Central show Insomniac and is currently casting to be taped in either Los Angeles or New York. If you have an act you want to try on the show, click here to send a link of your video taped act to a casting director.
Seems like the shows we rumored about ages ago are coming to reality. Our good friends at Embassy Row asked us to put some notices about casting for The Dating Game and The Newlywed Game, revivals of two popular classic game shows. These shows were rumored to be on Lifetime, but no official word just yet. If you want to apply for either of the shows, click here for Newlywed Game, here for Dating Game, or visit our casting page for these two in addition to other new shows like GSN’s Catch-21.
This casting notice might be interesting. People who casted for both Show Me the Money and Don’t Forget the Lyrics! are currently looking for contestants for a new game involving both the card game Blackjack as well as trivia. Is RDF, the company that does Don’t Forget the Lyrics!, a part of Endemol? It would make sense to me right now, but I can’t find anything unless I’m missing obvious signs here.
The most famous Blackjack show was called Gambit which ran in the 70s and hosted by Wink Martindale. The most recent attempt to get it on the air was a format from Distraction Formats called Casino, which was essentially the same game. This was pitched to GSN and turned down a while ago, so who knows, it may have popped up again. If you want to be a part of this show, click here to apply.
This casting notice amused me and I thought I’d post it. A casting company is looking for a family of five to participate on a new game show featuring a $1,000,000 top prize. This is a pilot for now, but they are paying you. They describe the show as a mix between Family Feud and Jeopardy!, as the teams will be tested on how well they know each other’s level of intelligence. They say they are also looking for the opposite of a Family Feud family, meaning they want teams who are argumentative and opinionated.
The part that really made me laugh about this is that they are shooting in Chile. If you want to sign up for this, you and your family of five will first fly to Sacramento, do a few run throughs, but they are actually flying you down to Chile to shoot the pilot. All expenses are paid at least, but still. Studio space that cheap in Chile? Or is this a foreign game show I haven’t heard of? It’s called Gene Pool for now. If you’d like to get involved, click here.
TV Land, the place for TV hits or something or other now, greenlit a pilot for a new game show with some old school roots. The show is called, for now, What’s in the Box?, and it’s literally as simple as it comes. Something’s in a box. Teams compete and ask up to 20 questions about what’s in it. If they guess correctly, they win a cash jackpot and a chance to win the grand prize. Doesn’t get any simpler, does it?
This show definitely verges on the “How much simpler can we make a show,” idea that so many shows have done recently, but I think this one actually succeeds. There’s some stragegy involved as you try to not give your opponents any hits or clues as to what it is. Plus it’ll make a fun online game at the very least, even if the show sucks.
Speculation can end: the revival of Match Game is being developed for TBS, which opens up many more doors than on GSN. The revival is part of TBS’s new announced development slate which includes a few sitcoms, sketch shows, and a late night revival of the classic comedy game show. Don’t worry about it being late night. GSN’s amazing I’ve Got A Secret revival was in late night and it was one of the classier (and funnier) shows in ages.
This ended up being a lot better than I expected. It was either going to GSN, Comedy Central, or TBS. GSN couldn’t afford some of the bigger names probably. Comedy Central, while I adore the station, would make it a tiny bit too “out there” and we’d never hear the end of how Comedy Central screwed up Match Game. TBS, a comedy cable channel, has many resources like big names for their sitcoms, bigger money, and probably an easier time scheduling it. At first I never would have guessed TBS, but this is a perfect fit for the network. Hopefully we’ll see it shortly.
Scanning through Craigslist and various other places, I’ve found some new game shows coming out, some of which might be decent. Of course with that some of them are going to be really bad and potentially end in law suits! Isn’t that fun? Let’s go over some.
First off, by the way, Million Dollar Password is still casting. I can guarantee you they had people there who know how to play the game. I auditioned for it and I can tell you first hand that a ton of people are extremely good and would be fine on the show. They just haven’t found the janitors they want. I’m not lying when I say that. They specifically told us they want people like janitors, so America can cheer for them.
Next we have a new mystery show for NBC! Oooh! It’s a pop culture quizzer. Uh oh! A new NBC movie buff game show is casting contestants who want to win up to $1,000,000 playing. If that’s you, click here. Wasn’t the DVD game “Scene It” being developed for a game show? Just saying.
I have a guilty pleasure at the Winter Olympics. The only game I like beyond hockey there is, yes, curling. NBC has the option to buy a show that sees. It’s not a celebrity show at least; though I won’t put it passed FOX to come up with Celebrity Curling Challenge. The show’s casting in April.
Finally, we have a new CBS game show that combines the fun of American Gladiators with America’s newest trend, divorce. In Splitsville, contestants who are getting divorces can bypass the legal system and go on a game show to divide their stuff up. I’m not well versed in the law (maybe some of you out there are) but I can’t imagine a game show being a legally binding substitute to the standard divorce process. Divorcing and don’t feel like going to a lawyer? Click here.
There’s been a YouTube clip that’s become a sensation somehow, and it’s from a Japanese game show called Hole in the Wall. Basically, it’s human Tetris. People have to fit through tiny holes in walls in various shapes as they move towards them. If they miss, they are tossed back into a pool of water. It’s humorous enough, but one thing I was always happy with was my thought of “At least this show’s so one-sided that it can’t possibly be picked up as its own show in America.” And as usual FOX does the impossible and makes me hide in the corner and shiver with fear out of their decisions. Cynopsis announced that FOX has ordered a pilot of Hole in the Wall from Fremantle. Here’s a clip of it.
Honestly, not much to it. And it’s going to be painfully scary to think how they’re going to do this in America. I doubt it’ll get past pilot stage, but still. In Italy, their version of one of my favorite games of the past decade, Distraction, uses this as one of their mini games. Not an entire show. I mean how do you even get excited watching this. The entire show will be a viewer going “Haha, he fell into the pool. Haha, she did too! Look, that one did as well!” I know that shows like Deal or No Deal have the similar idea of doing one tiny, somewhat stupid, objective for excruciatingly long periods of time, but at least there’s some drama and emotion there. This is going to get old so quickly it’s scary.
