Grand Slam Final Thoughts

Probably the event of many of our summers, GSN’s Grand Slam, has sadly come to a close. A champion has been crowned and his name is Ken Jennings. It was a very close game except for the third round, though. If you didn’t see the first round you need to look for it anywhere you can. I think I nearly vomited by the end I was so excited. A 0:00:14 second win was unreal. All of Embassy Row, the contestants, and GSN should be commended for this show. We haven’t seen a show this fast and smart in ages. It was a welcome change from shows like Set For Life.

I’m going to start with the few negatives I had so we can get it out of the way. First, I did not agree with the way players were seeded. I thought some sort of short minute quiz, off camera, would have been better.  Second was the addition of the pop culture round for the championship game. I’m not calling foul and shenanigans because I wanted Ogi to win, but if you’re going to have a round in there, have it from the start.  My final gripe was with Amy Kelly. If she reads this I am deeply sorry, but she had absolutely no place in this tournament. It’s obvious they wanted a GSN contestant for a cheap plug, but this bombed for them. She did not play that well on her game of Lingo and ended up getting lucky and getting a ball worth a lot of money. Is that worthy of a place in this tournament? There are two people I had in mind who would have been a lot better, two of which are easy to get a hold of. The first is Robert McKee of Lingo and Friend or Foe?.  The man flew through ten Bonus Lingo words on his own and also won the incredibly tough online tournament game. He should have been an easy choice, and he’s easy t get a hold of.  I know Embassy Row has his information somewhere.  Second is Maria Lay, a $100,000 winner from Russian Roulette. I don’t know where you’d get a hold of her, though.  Winning that show is tough in the first place, and answering all ten questions in roughly 51 seconds isn’t easy either. She apparently has the brain and speed.

However, enough gripes, because there weren’t that many. I think everyone deserves so much praise for this entire production. I’m relatively new to the entire game show world. I only started getting into them with Russian Roulette and Who Wants to be a Millionaire? so truthfully I did not know many of these people. However, they really got me interested and pulling for many of them. Phyllis Harris was my main example for that. It’s also amazing how this show has started a little community in many places. For one, we’ve had many many many contestants from Grand Slam communicate with many of our commenters, and I am thankful more than you can imagine. I still plan on making several Grand Slam posts, touching base with contestants as time goes on. There’s no reason to let this buzz die. In keeping the community together, Ed Toutant and runner-up Ogi Ogas have set up a website for fans at the Grand Slam Arena. There, on the site, are various stats, videos, pictures, and a message board to talk to fans of the show and contestants. Please be sure to keep checking it, as updates will be made as soon as available.

I think the main reason this show was so enjoyable was how fast, smart, and exciting it was. I was on the edge of my seat throughout many of those matches. I’m not that excited when I watch people randomly pick briefcases or boxes on Deal or No Deal. The play-along factor was amazing. There were several shout-at-the-television moments, moments of happiness, sorrow, and more. Plus the math round was a nice touch. We don’t usually see math oriented shows in America so that round was rather exciting I thought. I also just felt for the losing and winnings contestants the entire time. I felt sad when some of my favorites lost. I was cheering when my picks won. Again, I don’t get that from shiny light and big dollar total shows.

Though he was rough at first, Dennis Miller just got better and better. He ended up being great by the end. If he can stay in the non-horribly obscure area, he’s great. Amanda was also fantastic. And we all know Pat Kiernan was great as the Questioner. Next season, though, can we just call him Pat Kiernan? “The Questioner” got a bit goofy.

Now comes the big question: What are the chances this will be brought back? With so many new shows coming, I can’t see why not. I already touched upon two people who I felt would be great for the show. We’re bound to have at least one contestant from each Crosswords and Temptation that can make it. We have at least two contestants from 1 VS 100 who deserve a shot. Not to mention new champions coming from Jeopardy?, Family Feud, Duel, and many more. My main suggestion to GSN and Michael Davies is to hold either an online or regional qualifier to allow some civilians into the tournament. I think it would be quite interesting to see how a regular person who won a qualifying game would do against someone like Ken Jennings. This show was just all around entertaining. Yeah, there were a few issues (mainly with the Switches), but that hardly equaled a quarter of how fun, entertaining, and exciting the show was. I hope to see a 2008 Grand Slam tournament, and I’d love to hear your thoughts on the completed tournament.

Ogas VS Jennings: Who Wins “Grand Slam”?

Edit: I’ll have my final thoughts, some ideas for a new season, and, for lack of a better term, “good will messages”, on Monday.  We won’t devote a separate article on the championship until then, as to not spoil people.  If you’d like to be spoiled, feel free to go to the comments.

GSN’s popular summer series Grand Slam comes to a close with the championship game today, Saturday, September 8th at 7PM ET. The first contender: Jeopardy! super-champion with a 74-game winning streak and over $3,000,000 in total prize winnings to date. He was only one win away from being the most winning contestant in worldwide game show history. That man is Ken Jennings. The last finalist: the brain science graduate student who was almost the first $1,000,000 winner on Who Wants to be a Millionaire? in four years if he pulled the trigger and uttered those two magic words: “Final Answer”. The opponent is Ogi Ogas.

Both have something to prove. Ogas was visibly shaken when he did not win the million dollars. Jennings would probably still be on Jeopardy! today and have beaten every record on earth if a few mental handicaps didn’t occur in his final game. The finale of Grand Slam will truly be filled with competition unlike anything seen on television. Ogi has already defeated Brad Rutter. Can he defeat Ken Jennings? The semi-finals really showed what each is capable of.

With Ogi Ogas versus David Legler, David never had much of a chance. Ogi stayed calm, cool, collected, and rarely missed a beat. The same happened with Ken Jennings against Michelle Kitt. No offense to either losers, but both were basically mental bitchslaps. The stage is set and the final match is just days away. Look for some gameplay changes, like a fifth round which could be a huge advantage in gaining a massive lead. However, it could just as easy take away a lead. We will be showing some video clips of Ken Jennings and Ogi Ogas throughout this week. Ogas VS Jennings: who do you think will win Grand Slam and why? Pre/post game thoughts?

“Grand Slam” Champ’s Finest Moments

Tomorrow’s the big day.  On GSN at 7PM ET, the winner of the first Grand Slam will be crowned and it will either be Ken Jennings or Ogi Ogas.  Before we get into predictions and more, let’s look at their finest moments.  Here are two videos, each of the contestant’s big wins.

“Grand Slam” Commentary for September 1st

Tonight’s the big semifinal match.  Whoever wins the two games tonight will move to the finals and be one step away from $100,000.  We will see Ogi Ogas take on David Legler and Ken Jennings against Michelle Kitt.  Interestingly we seem to have Ogi, Ken, and Michelle around here, so we might be able to get some fun commentary after the show.  Keep checking in our comment boxes, as we have other contestants like Phyllis Harris around as well.  Now for my crazy predictions.

The first game will see Ogi Ogas against David Legler.  David’s been a lot stronger than I expected.  Twenty-One wasn’t exactly that hard of a show to win an assload of money in and the material wasn’t nearly up to Millionaire’s standards.  However, he’s just blown me away with how good he’s been so far.  However, we come to Ogi Ogas who is just, to use a phrase that I hate but can think of no other way to describe him, crazy good.  He has the speed down and is just awesome with basically all the material.  I have to give this game to Ogi.  Nothing against Mr. Legler, but I just don’t see him beating Ogi.  I actually see Ogi winning the entire thing.

The next match pains me: Ken Jennings versus Michelle Kitt.  I have connections with both of them.  I really like Michelle.  Just from what I’ve heard from her in comments and emails, she’s incredible and I feel bad for ever doubting her abilities (I still don’t feel bad for doubting Amy Kelly, though).  Then we have Ken Jennings.  Back in the Blogger days of Buzzer, I interviewed him and he is also incredible, so I really don’t have any personal feelings swaying my decision.  I think this match is going to be simply decided by Ken Jennings.  If he stumbles at all, he’s going to lose.  If he stays steady, he’ll win.  Michelle has proven to be, for lack of a better word, a complete predator at the game.  If you show any flaw, she will viciously attack you.  She did it to Kevin Olmstead and she did it without mercy to John Carpenter.  I just have to say Ken Jennings is going to win.  He’s just too strong.  If Michelle loses, she deserves such a huge applause from everyone for destroying so many top contestants after being considered an underdog.  If she wins, I think I have to buy her flowers for saying she’s going to lose twice and proving me wrong.

And this last statement is nothing against Ken whatsoever.  I really want to see an Ogi Ogas/Michelle Kitt finale.  I think Ken’s going to win, but (and again, no offense) I want Michelle to win.

GSN Launches Grand Slam Online Game

Hooray, GSN has a Grand Slam game online.  Basically, if you answer 5 questions right in 60 seconds, you move to the next round.

The first time I played it, I didn’t get past the General Knowledge round.  But the second time, I got 5th place on the leaderboard!  :-D

Go check it out here.

“Grand Slam” Commentary for August 25th

Is it just me, or is it getting very difficult to call the Grand Slam games recently?  It seems most of my calls have been on such petty items that it seems more like a guess than anything else.  Anyway, on today’s Grand Slam on GSN at 7PM ET, we see Ken Jennings face off against Phyllis Harris and Michelle Kitt versus John Carpenter.  Let’s take a look at Jennings/Harris.

This one is tricky because of how they both stand.  Jennings is obviously a trivia giant and used to the speed of a game because of Jeopardy!.  Phyllis Harris has been on roughly two million game shows and has experience across the board; on shows that require and don’t require speed.  I’m going to actually go with Phyllis Harris to win.  As I saw in Ken Jenning’s initial round, he’s awesome at trivia but not as much on the word and math round.  Phyllis is very well rounded because of her massive game show experience and that will easily come in handy.  Where Jennings gets her on trivia she can easily make up on words, logic, and math.  I’m calling Phyllis Harris to beat Ken Jennings.

And now we come to the other match: Michelle Kitt versus John Carpenter.  I’ve been talking to a few people about this one, and I am truly stumped.  John Carpenter is, again, one of those masters of trivia obviously.  He answered 25 Millionaire-level questions correctly without a lifeline; 28 out of 30 in total.  However, Who Wants to be a Millionaire does not involve any remote amount of speed thinking.  This is where Michelle Kitt might have an advantage.  It took me a bit of time to realize it, but think about this: Weakest Link and Grand Slam are very similar in the style of the game.  The only huge difference is the voting.  Michelle Kitt’s game involved trivia, words, logic, math, and more under intense time pressure.  You have to be the perfect player to make it to the end and win over $100,000 on that show.  Sadly, I have no clear opinion of who will win this one.  On just some weird hunch I’m going to say that Michelle Kitt beats John Carpenter and I am completely ready to be totally wrong.  What are your pre game and post game thoughts?  If we’re lucky, maybe Ms. Kitt can tell us of her experience on the show.

“Grand Slam” Commentary for August 19th

I’m very sorry, everyone.  I went to a roller derby game and went to see Clockwork Orange tonight so I completely spaced out about Grand Slam today saw games Brad Rutter VS Ogi Ogas and Leszek Pawlowicz VS David Legler.  This is where I’m stumped.  I can call that Pawlowicz beats Legler, but I have no idea with Rutter VS Ogas.  Both are very smart.  The only advantage I could call on Rutter is that he has the speed thing down, but apparently Ogas does as well.  I don’t know why, but I have a slight hunch Mr. Ogi Ogas wins it.  What did you think of the episode?

“Grand Slam” Commentary for 8/12

<>We had major computer errors, but we’re back up and we’ll post what was supposed to be posted before this evening’s episode of Grand Slam on GSN.

In the first game, we see David Legler of Twenty-One versus mega-Jeopardy! champion Frank Spangenberg.  My prediction for this game is Mr. Spangenberg.  I don’t mean to downplay Mr. Legler’s huge win on Twenty-One  or his relatively impressive winning streak, but the speed is horribly important in Grand Slam.  Frank Spangenberg faced tougher material, tougher competition, and tougher clock scrutiny on Jeopardy!.  David Legler may have won seven+ games of Twenty-One, but it doesn’t come close to the huge accomplishments that Frank Spangenberg had on Jeopardy!.

We come to the final prelim match between Nancy Christy against Ogi Ogas both of the syndicated edition of Who Wants to be a Millionaire.  I don’t like admitting my flaws, but here we go: I have absolutely no idea who is going to win.  At all.  My prediction is Ogi Ogas, but that’s just on a few simple factors and even all but one is a stretch.  For one, Millionaire was easier when Nancy won her million than when Ogi won his $500,000.  The only remote way I can make a prediction is going by age, and even that is too hard to tell.  Ogi Ogas is unbelievably smart, doing research funded by the Homeland Security Department.  Then again, Nancy Christy is a teacher and may be more well-rounded on the math, logic, and word puzzle areas.  I think both will be even on the trivia.  The main reason I’m going with Ogi Ogas is the age, truth be told.  I feel since Mr. Ogas is younger that his reflexes will be faster than his older competition Ms. Christy.  This is honestly the only reasoning I have.  This is such an even match that I won’t be shocked if I’m wrong.

What did you all think of tonight’s match; let’s get some post-show commentary.

“Grand Slam” Commentary for 8/11

Going on right now is yet another edition of GSN and Embassy Row’s Grand Slam.  Today’s matches should be very interesting.  We have Twenty-One champ Rahim Oberholtzer against someone who has played more game shows than you can dream of (and won a lot as well), Phyllis Harris.  My pick: Phyllis Harris.  Mr. Oberholtzer may have won over a million on Twenty-One but that is nothing overly difficult to do.  It just took winning four games.  Phyllis has been a champion of many many game shows, has more of an experience, because of this, with different material, and may be more used to the pressure of the experience.

In another game, we see the first champion of Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, John Carpenter, against Tic Tac Dough master Thom McKee.  My pick for this game is John Carpenter.  Nothing against all the Tic Tac Dough fans, but that game’s material was for braindead people.  It’s an issue I have with that Tic Tac Dough/The Joker’s Wild/Bullseye trio.  I recently watched John Carpenter’s first win again on YouTube.  His questions were a lot easier than was necessary, but he came back on the champions show and, with tougher material, won $250,000.  He answered 28 out of the 30 questions correctly, going 25 out of 30 without using a lifeline.  Plus he’s used to the Fastest Finger, so he may be more used to the extreme speed factor.  What do you all think, and how do you think today’s show went?

“Grand Slam”: Readers Live Blog Tonight! (August 5th)

I just feel like clearing this up: In the last post, I never said I didn’t like Grand Slam. I think it could get boring if there’s a very uneven match. But beyond that, this is GSN’s best show in a while.

To save from people not wanting to know results, please post all commentary for the August 5th episode of Grand Slam here. Tonight’s matches include Brad Rutter VS Amy Kelly (Lucky Super Lingo winner) and Ed Toutant VS Leszek Pawlowicz. I think we all know that Brad Rutter is going to kick Amy Kelly’s ass so hard that it’ll take her a few days to find it (No offense, Amy). However, Toutant VS Pawlowicz is going to be very interesting. I see we have Mr. Pawlowicz commenting recently, and we’d love to hear his thoughts about this episode. Please feel free, anyone, to comment about today’s episode here. Grand Slam airs weekends at 7PM ET on GSN.
