Upfront Game Show Announcements

It’s upfront week and not a lot of game show news has been going around.  We’ve really been over-saturated in primetime and it’s time for a short break, which is good because if we keep getting shows like Set For Life, I give up.  Anyway, FOX announced their schedule and all three of their game shows survive into the Fall 2008 schedule.  They’ve really benefited from using safe formats with relatively interesting concepts that generates a lot of water cooler talk.

First off, if you’re used to watching Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader? and Don’t Forget the Lyrics! on Thursdays, get ready to make a change.  The night of punctuation moves to Fridays, with Fifth Grader? at 8:00PM ET and Lyrics! at 9:00PM ET.  I still can’t stand Fifth Grader; I just don’t think it’s a good million dollar format.  When the cheaper daytime version comes in 2009, then we’ll talk.  However, I watched Lyrics! a few weeks ago and I have to admit it’s not really that bad.  Sure the format is unoriginal and I really don’t like any of the music (I’m a 80s and early 90s alt/grunge person), but it’s a relatively enjoyable fun hour.

My personal favorite of the group, The Moment of Truth will be placed in the Thursday at 8:00PM ET slot.  This show generates the most talk and has the biggest chance of combating any of the networks.  Look at the Laura Cleri episode to just realize the amount of talk the show generates.  The show consistently gets ratings and is a pretty fun way to spend an hour.  It’s far from a classy show, but it does something that Amne$ia never did and why shows like ABC’s Opportunity Knocks will fail: even if you can’t really play along it makes you show real human emotion.  You want the contestants to win money because they’ve done good things.  You want them to fail because they are asses.  It makes you voice speak up.

As far as NBC goes, it’s still just Deal or No Deal with 1 VS 100 not looking good to come back.  CBS has no traditional game shows but will always have its cash cow Survivor.  A CBS representative told us that they have six episodes of Do You Trust Me?, a retooling of Friend or Foe? from GSN, but aren’t placing it on any upcoming schedule.  ABC just has the aforementioned Opportunity Knocks which I can just sense the failure slowly creeping off of.  On the cable front, like we said we have MTV’s The Phone upcoming, and GSN has three shows.  One is Catch-21, which we’ve described in excruciating detail.  They also have two more revivals coming out soon.

“Power of 10″ Rules as of Now + “Do You Trust Me” Information

Edit: Thanks to Gordon Pepper from the fantastic GSNN for new information on the $10,000,000 question.  The $10,000,000 question uses the same question.  If you get the $1,000,000 question correct obviously the exact answer is one of those ten percentage points.  You have to guess which of the ten it is.

We have some inside information on the current rules of CBS’s new primetime game show Power of 10 thanks to a contestant from a run-through who shall remain nameless as of now, but we do thank them. Little has changed from the pilot rules. In the main game, two contestants compete to see who can be closest to the actual number on a poll similar to a question from Card Sharks. Two formats were tested with this main game: one that was timed and one that wasn’t. Our source said the timed version was much better, to keep the game going. The closest player got a point, and three points wins the game and plays for $10,000,000.

In the money round, you’re given a range and have to place it on the scale from 0-100% for the question. Here’s the breakdown of the range and money.

$1,000 question: 40% range (20 points up and down)
$10,000 question: 30% range (15 points up and down)
$100,000 question: 20% range (10 points up and down)
$1,000,000 question: 10% range (5 points up and down)
$10,000,000 question: See Top

If you miss a question at any time, you go back down one level. So that means if you go for the million and miss, you lose $900,000. However, if you get it, you win $9,000,000 more. On each question you can see what the audience felt the right percentage was and you may ask a friend what their opinion is before you lock in any answer. We’re hearing the show is very very good, impressive display of graphics and set, and that Drew Carey, the new host of The Price is Right is very good at his role on Power of 10. My only gripe right now is the 10% for $10,000,000. I was hoping for something a tiny bit more inventive. However, it is a hell of a lot better than the exact-guess from the pilot. Of course be aware that rules may change for the final product, but as of one day before taping this is what we have. You can visit the website here.

Also, CBS has already published a website for another new game show: Do You Trust Me?. Not much is known beyond that contestants will try to build a bank of money up to $1,000,000. And honestly, beyond the fact that Tucker Carlson is still the host, that’s all that’s known. If I had to guess I’d say this is another way to try to fit in a Friend or Foe? like round into a primetime game, but I’ve been wrong many times in the past. You can become a contestant for the show by clicking here.

“Do You Trust Me?” Begins Casting

CBS’s newest game show Do You Trust Me? most likely coming this fall, has begun casting. We kinda figured this would be a backstabbing game show, and it does seem to lead a road of deception, but it kinda sounds lame. Here is CBS’s description for casting.

“Are you a big character with a fascinating life story or a strange job? Are people constantly surprised to discover what you do for a living? Do you lead a sort of double life?”

If you actually do fit this description, you may fill out an application at this link. No word on a specific airdate or host yet, however Tucker Carlson did host the pilot. When new details are out, BuzzerBlog will be sure to have them for you.

CBS Picks Up “Do You Trust Me?”

It was announced today that CBS has picked up the psychological game show Do You Trust Me? for six episodes. The new game from Lingo’s Phil Gurin and hosted by conservative pundit Tucker Carlson sees contestants wager how much they trust each other as they develop relationships in the game. No word on the specific air date or official rules or casting as of yet. But hey, we have another backstabbing game show it seems. I believe I said it before, I’m a big fan of shows like Friend or Foe? and Dirty Rotten Cheater so the more the merrier.
