Upfront Game Show Announcements

It’s upfront week and not a lot of game show news has been going around.  We’ve really been over-saturated in primetime and it’s time for a short break, which is good because if we keep getting shows like Set For Life, I give up.  Anyway, FOX announced their schedule and all three of their game shows survive into the Fall 2008 schedule.  They’ve really benefited from using safe formats with relatively interesting concepts that generates a lot of water cooler talk.

First off, if you’re used to watching Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader? and Don’t Forget the Lyrics! on Thursdays, get ready to make a change.  The night of punctuation moves to Fridays, with Fifth Grader? at 8:00PM ET and Lyrics! at 9:00PM ET.  I still can’t stand Fifth Grader; I just don’t think it’s a good million dollar format.  When the cheaper daytime version comes in 2009, then we’ll talk.  However, I watched Lyrics! a few weeks ago and I have to admit it’s not really that bad.  Sure the format is unoriginal and I really don’t like any of the music (I’m a 80s and early 90s alt/grunge person), but it’s a relatively enjoyable fun hour.

My personal favorite of the group, The Moment of Truth will be placed in the Thursday at 8:00PM ET slot.  This show generates the most talk and has the biggest chance of combating any of the networks.  Look at the Laura Cleri episode to just realize the amount of talk the show generates.  The show consistently gets ratings and is a pretty fun way to spend an hour.  It’s far from a classy show, but it does something that Amne$ia never did and why shows like ABC’s Opportunity Knocks will fail: even if you can’t really play along it makes you show real human emotion.  You want the contestants to win money because they’ve done good things.  You want them to fail because they are asses.  It makes you voice speak up.

As far as NBC goes, it’s still just Deal or No Deal with 1 VS 100 not looking good to come back.  CBS has no traditional game shows but will always have its cash cow Survivor.  A CBS representative told us that they have six episodes of Do You Trust Me?, a retooling of Friend or Foe? from GSN, but aren’t placing it on any upcoming schedule.  ABC just has the aforementioned Opportunity Knocks which I can just sense the failure slowly creeping off of.  On the cable front, like we said we have MTV’s The Phone upcoming, and GSN has three shows.  One is Catch-21, which we’ve described in excruciating detail.  They also have two more revivals coming out soon.

Friday’s “Price is Right”

Friday was a very eventful Price is Right $1,000,000 Spectacular.   Gigantic cars given away, big prizes everywhere, and (again) another million dollar winner.  This one was on a $1,000,000 game for a change: Clock Game.  The videos are below, but I would really just like to say that the million dollar wins are getting ridiculous.  I love seeing big winners and also I don’t want to take anything away from contestant Cynthia’s win.  She played brilliantly and deserved it, truly deserved it.  Plus winning the showcase at the end of the show cemented the fact as well.  However, it’s three millionaires in, what, five episodes?  A bit much if you ask me.  What do you all think?  Or were you one of the few people watching Duel instead?  Here are two videos from Price.

REVIEW: Ludia’s “The Price is Right”

Do you remember when we talked about a “Price” PC game in development? Well, after a long wait, it has been released to the public.

I must say, it’s pretty good. Graphics are good-looking,

There’s only a couple of minor issues. First, the prizes are video clips from actual aired shows, so there’s a very small chance that somebody playing may have that episode on tape, and can then guess the ARP exactly. Second, it would be nice to have keyboard support for typing in bids. Clicking on “hidden arrows” up and down gets the job done, but it’s not the way the average user would expect to enter numbers on a PC game.

The complete list of pricing games:

  • 3 Strikes
  • Bonkers
  • Check-Out
  • Cliffhangers
  • Flip Flop
  • Freeze Frame
  • Hole in One (or Two)
  • It’s in the Bag
  • Master Key
  • Money Game
  • Plinko
  • Punch-A-Bunch
  • Push Over
  • Race Game
  • Range Game
  • Shell Game

Overall, I give the game 4/5. Try it out first, then buy it if you like it. I certainly did. :-DLudia’s “The Price is Right” software is available as a 30-minute free trial or as a $19.99 purchase (plus applicable sales tax). Download it here.

As a tip: You can skip through Rich’s explanation of Contestant’s Row, the pricing games, etc., by clicking anywhere in the main portion of the screen. However, you cannot skip through prize descriptions (unless you bid on the first showcase, which will then produce a “Skip” button to click on during the second).

CBS Orders More Primetime “Price is Right”

CBS tried putting Drew Carey’s Power of 10 on Wednesdays at 8:00PM ET and it failed rather spectacularly.  Drew’s getting a second chance as four new $1,000,000 episodes of The Price is Right have been ordered to start airing April 30th at 8:00PM ET.  The show has been very consistent in winning its time slot Fridays at 8:00PM ET, albeit it has had literally no competition.  Facing Deal or No Deal and Moment of Truth is a tiny bit different than the soon-to-be-glue (and rightfully so) racehorse named Amne$ia.

This is actually going to set up a really interesting game show division.  You’ll have Deal or No Deal with its big-money-flashy game crowd.  You’ll have Moment of Truth with the slightly cynical and human emotion crowd.  And finally you’ll have The Price is Right with the older skewing safety game crowd.  I don’t think it’ll be a big surprise to see Price is Right skewing the oldest, but I’ll be really interested to see what show takes a bigger hit from this schedule change.  I’d expect to see Deal lose more, but I’ve been wrong many times before.

A Few Bits of News

Sorry for no updates recently, there’s barely been anything and I’ve been exhausted the past few days.  It’s been a long month.

*FOX wasn’t lying about the Human Tetris Japanese show remake of Hole in the Wall, were they?  We’ve got a casting notice now.  It seems like, oddly enough, they are taping in Australia.  For any Aussies we have reading this, is there a version of the show down there somewhere?  I have no idea why we’re going down there, but oh well.

*ABC is casting heavily for season two of Duel right now.  They are stressing the prize is “up to a million bucks in cash prizes”, so I’m taking a tiny guess that we’re getting some form of a money chain.  And that could be a lot worse; It could be a tournament again.  The rest of the budget probably went to new devices for host Mike Greenberg to wave around in his hand.  How about we give him a sparkler?  At least make it more exciting to watch.

The ratings will also be updated later tonight.

Preview of “Million Dollar Password”

Edit:  We’ve got a video of the set.  Click here.

An audience member who wishes to remain anonymous sent us a look into the rules of CBS’s new bastardization of a classic: Million Dollar Password. I’ve already started off negatively because they really, really screwed up the show. Not nearly as bad as something like, say, Temptation. But this is bad. They’ve transformed it into an extremely lackluster revival of Pyramid. Get ready for speed round after speed round after speed round.

Of course the set is a stereotypical game show set. Circular, audience all around, different entrances, huge monitors, neon, dark colors, and so on. Honestly if you were expecting anything different you were crazy, so no use dwelling on this. It’s become a device game shows use so much that I’m fine with it at this point. Plus, honestly, I like the neon sets. I think they are very nice looking.

And now the format. It’s the same celebrity and contestant setup as every other version of Password. There are four rounds in the front game of trying to get five words in 30 seconds. Each word is a point. Celebrity/contestant trade off giving each round. After round two the celebrities switch. Opposites are allowed as clues. Most points plays for $1,000,000. So far not so bad, but be careful. Money chain alert!

In the end game, the entire premise is to get five words out of a certain amount in 90 seconds each time. There are six tiers to the end game.

Tier 1: 5 words out of 10: $10,000
*Tier 2: 5 words out of 9: $25,000*
Tier 3: 5 words out of 8: $50,000
Tier 4: 5 words out of 7: $100,000
Tier 5: 5 words out of 6: $250,000
Tier 6: 5 words out of 5: $1,000,000

$25,000 is a milestone. If you get to that, you don’t leave with less. If you beat a level, you decide to play the next tier or go home. The words get harder as you go up the money chain. If you lose, though, you go back to either $0 or $25,000. The really strange part is that you can only give THREE clues per password. That’s right, just three. After that, you’re screwed. Whenever you are done with the end game, two new contestants come on.

And there we have it. It’s been well documented at this point that I’m not a big fan of the classics, but there are three that I love, and Password is one of them. I wouldn’t have a problem if it wasn’t just constant speed round after speed round. It truly turns the show into Pyramid with a costume on. I hate to complain about the money chain also, because it’s probably the safest, though least inventive, game play device. If you can keep a nice chain, it’s hard to go wrong. It just seems awkward in this format.

I always had a bad feeling about this show, and I was fully expecting to be proven wrong. However, this actually worries me more than I figured. It was going to be excessively hard to turn Password into a $1,000,000 game show, and they did it really poorly. It’s not totally wrong. It has the heart and soul of the original in it. But so does Temptation. We see where that went. Hopefully it’ll look better played on TV, but right now, looking a bit scary.

Another Millionaire on “The Price is Right”

We had our second millionaire in the three episodes of Drew Carey’s $1,000,000 episodes of The Price is Right.  And by this point all I’m saying is, “I really don’t care anymore.”

Congratulations for him on winning.  But it’s getting a bit insane.  I really rarely watch The Price is Right when it’s on; I have classes and a career; but I’ve heard that a double showcase win has happened an extremely large amount of times.  Now we have two on the million dollar episodes?  Isn’t that a bit much?  I thought the $1,000 range was fine initially.  Apparently it needs to be a bit tougher.  Of course CBS doesn’t care.  I keep hearing that the show will be way over budget and offer crappy prizes which really amuses me.  These specials are doing fantastic in primetime on Fridays.  If they keep doing this well, CBS will give them more and more money and that million isn’t going to really be a huge issue.  They’re fun specials, but I’m completely losing care of anyone winning a million dollars now, and that’s just not good.

Game Show Friday Night

A lot of game shows were on the major networks Friday.  I was out at a party so I didn’t get to check all of them out, but a few notes.

1: Wow, Drew Carey has to be the luckiest person in the universe.  First Power of 10 and now Price is Right.

2: Amne$ia wasn’t as god awful as I expected, but it still seems off to me.  It’s another one of those shows that does not fit in primetime despite the efforts of producers.  I really unfairly compared this to Moment of Truth; it’s like comparing apples and oranges.  I’m still more of a fan of Moment of Truth.  I felt more emotion on that game than I did  on Amne$ia, and Mark Walberg comes off as a much stronger host than Dennis Miller.  But still, not a bad little show at all and one of the few times where my snap judgements were really wrong.

3: 1 VS 100 had its season finale, and who knows if it’s coming back.  I truly feel Endemol dropped the ball big time.  From changing the game so basically everyone who wins less than $100,000 is a dumbass to dumbing down the material, it was just a mess.  Nothing against big winners like Jason Luna, but I’d like to see if he would have gotten as far with season one material.  It would have been a severe challenge compared to before.  The ratings haven’t exactly been fantastic, though they haven’t really gone down that much either.  It’s definitely on the bubble again.

This Week in Game Show Casting

Scanning through Craigslist and various other places, I’ve found some new game shows coming out, some of which might be decent.  Of course with that some of them are going to be really bad and potentially end in law suits!  Isn’t that fun?  Let’s go over some.

First off, by the way, Million Dollar Password is still casting.  I can guarantee you they had people there who know how to play the game.  I auditioned for it and I can tell you first hand that a ton of people are extremely good and would be fine on the show.  They just haven’t found the janitors they want.  I’m not lying when I say that.  They specifically told us they want people like janitors, so America can cheer for them.

Next we have a new mystery show for NBC!  Oooh!  It’s a pop culture quizzer.  Uh oh!  A new NBC movie buff game show is casting contestants who want to win up to $1,000,000 playing.  If that’s you, click here.  Wasn’t the DVD game “Scene It” being developed for a game show?  Just saying.

I have a guilty pleasure at the Winter Olympics.  The only game I like beyond hockey there is, yes, curling.  NBC has the option to buy a show that sees.  It’s not a celebrity show at least; though I won’t put it passed FOX to come up with Celebrity Curling Challenge.  The show’s casting in April.

Finally, we have a new CBS game show that combines the fun of American Gladiators with America’s newest trend, divorce.  In Splitsville, contestants who are getting divorces can bypass the legal system and go on a game show to divide their stuff up.  I’m not well versed in the law (maybe some of you out there are) but I can’t imagine a game show being a legally binding substitute to the standard divorce process.  Divorcing and don’t feel like going to a lawyer?  Click here.

Primetime “Price is Right” Specials to Tweak Million Dollar Format

One issue I had when The Price is Right always used to do their primetime specials was my lack of general care. I found myself tuning in to see the wheel if anyone would win the million, and turning it off when it didn’t happen. Thankfully they seem to have tweaked the format correctly to make sure this doesn’t help. The first of the Price is Right Million Dollar Spectaculars will air Friday, February 22nd, at 8PM ET. These are the first under new (and absolutely amazing) host Drew Carey.

The general game change is that you don’t win the million on the big wheel anymore thankfully. There are two ways. During the show, one game is declared the “Million Dollar Game”, where if you play a perfect game during that event you get $1,000,000. Also, the other main way to win the million is through the Showcases. If you’ve seen the shows, it’s rather common to have really wrong bids on the showcases because they are so much. For the specials, if you come within $1,000, it’s declared a double showcase win, and you also get $1,000,000.

There are talks of the primetime specials to be in HD, but I’ve not seen concrete proof of this or confirmation anywhere substantial. Have I missed it somewhere? Regardless, this seems like yet another positive change for Price is Right under Drew Carey. They honestly have not done anything that wrong with the new era of the show in my eyes yet, so here’s to many more. They updated the set a tiny bit for the primetime specials. The pattern is now squares instead of circles, and honestly it looks really nice to me. Here’s actually a video of it from The Insider.
