“American Gladiators” Coming To DVD
More fun DVD news released today. The first season of American Gladiators with Mike Adamle, Joe Theismann, and Todd Christensen will be released on July 14th. The Original Series: The Battle Begins will contain all 26 episodes on 3 DVDs (which probably means this thing is on double-sided "Gemini" discs, folks). Even though you can officially view these episodes right now on YouTube, I'd still buy this so we have more of a chance of getting the rest of the series online or on DVD. So, when you're done watching Whose Line is it Anyway, go for the "Gold" that is American Gladiators.

We have a great find thanks to the users at the Game Show Forum. Apparently, MGM has created a YouTube channel for American Gladiators, which includes some "cheating" clips, Olympic atheletes clips, and even all 26 episodes from the first season. Check it out.

Here's our video of the weekend: England's revival of Gladiators. It looks exactly like our season one, just a bit smaller, and that was a bit disappointing. Equally as disappointing as our season one was, actually. Here is their Eliminator which left a lot to be desired. No one seems to understand how to make the travelator doable apparently. Here’s a comment box to discuss the season debut of American Gladiators today at 8:00PM ET on NBC. Network: NBC Airings: Mondays at 8:00PM ET Host(s): Hulk Hogan and Leila Ali Vote for how many stars you think the show deserves to the right, and then leave a comment! American Gladiators is the ultimate televised extreme sports competition. Two men and two women face off against each other and the Gladiators in events of athletic prowess, skill, and determination. By the end of the regular events, each point the leader has equals a half-second lead in the final event: the Eliminator. Whoever crosses the finish line first wins and continues on through the tournament. The grand champions of the season wins $100,000 and a new car. The first season admittedly had a lot of issues. They tried to reinvent the wheel a bit too much. They made some events too easy (see Power Ball and Hang Tough) or they made them far too hard and complex (see Assault and Eliminator). As season two news came in, we were told they made a lot of changes for the better, and it seems that they did. (more...)

With the second season of "American Gladiators" on the horizon, I figure it's time we see how it's done somewhere else. The Australian version has already had a gladiator ejected from a show. Here's something many of you will love all thanks to our urge to really amp up the videos on the site. We have a preview of three of the games from the new season of American Gladiators exclusively for you. Two new events are shown, Vertigo and Rocket Ball. Also shown is Assault, but be happy that they simplified it this year. The layout and weapon design is still the same, but no more loading your weapons or finding arrows in sand pits or anything like that. The second season of American Gladiators has been taping in the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena, and to say the set is larger this year is an understatement. It's unbelievably massive. Sadly, though, there are not any gigantic pictures of the set, but we do have these shots of some of the events. Click them to expand the image. As you see in the first one, they put caps over the Powerball scoring zones so you can't make a free throw anymore. One of the pictures is also of the new event Vertigo. It looks to be pretty exciting. All told we're hearing there may be up to seven new events total this season so it seems they learned from some of their mistakes last time around. Enjoy!

One of our readers has found some episodes of American Gladiators on iTunes. In addition to NBC season one, there are six-packs of classic episodes from seasons one and two and from three and four. The NBC season costs $14.99, while the classic six-packs are $9.99. Individual episodes from either set are $1.99 each.

Not to be remotely jingoistic, but hopefully we'll get some American news soon. However, I'm sure some of you will enjoy some news and pictures about the new Australian revival of the hit show Gladiators. Seems like they are going for an even more British route than we did. However, a large amount of their Gladiators look like the casting department said, "Look at what the American Gladiators look like! Hey, I have an idea, let's not be original. Let's get people who look oddly similar and have many of the same themes." Plus some of the names are downright crappy. Angel? Destiny? Sounds like a girl group reunion tour. Their list of games puts ours to shame, though. They are basically getting a lot of the same events that we had, but they are including some great ones as well that we were missing, like Atlasphere. There are also some games which Americans might not be familiar with, like Pendulum, Sumo Ball, Suspension Bridge, and Vertigo. You can check out some pictures here. And now the question to keep us all entertained. What events would you like to see come back for season two of NBC's American Gladiators?

NBC seems to be leading the network battle of unscripted shows (until American Idol shows its sorry face on television again sadly). Their newest show, the revival of the hit 90s show American Gladiators, has been renewed for a second season according to B&C. The show has been a strong performer, seeing over 12 million viewers on its debut and a very strong showing on its regular Monday slot. No word on how many episodes are ordered or when it'll start, but I'd bet a few dollars and say fairly soon. A few other news pieces about Gladiators. A live tour is currently being planned to capitalize on the success of the show. Also, MGM and Flor-Jon are in the process of developing an....animated series? Really? I can't wait to see how this would turn out. NBCU co-chairman Ben Silverman recently confirmed that all Gladiators went through steroid testing, and all came out clean. By signing on to the show, the Gladiators has to state that they are/will remain clean and can go through testing at any time. Can you imagine Hellga on steroids? *shivers*

From TVWeek: It should be no surprise since the ratings are so strong, but NBCU Entertainment co-chair wants more of American Gladiators to fill the schedule. In fact, be expecting a two hour season one finale on Sunday, February 17th, directly before the Knight Rider television movie/pilot. “I can’t tell you [what we’re doing for the finale],” Silverman says. “If I did, Wolf and Hulk would show up at your door.” Next season, though, be prepared for a larger game roster and a fine-tuned format. Now I'm wondering what definition of fine-tuning are they talking about. The way they fine-tuned the offers to be more evil on Deal or No Deal, or the not that bad fine-tuning of 1 VS 100. Might we suggest just making it a 1 second-per-point head start in the Eliminator? Especially since it's so long (which I do like). I really enjoy the new edition of American Gladiators so the more the better. Out of curiosity, do any of you have a favorite Gladiator yet? Right now I have to go with Hellga; she is truly frightening. She's scarier than any of the men. Speaking of that, is it just me or do the male Gladiators just annoy you? The female ones are much more enjoyable than the men. And yes, Crush is extremely hot.

We have loads of pictures from NBC's revived series of American Gladiators debuting January 6th. The old events are basically the same only made more extreme, like The Wall and Joust being over water. Look for an amazing new tweak to Assault which will see the Gladiator sent sky high if he or she loses. All of this is really making me anticipate the new series. Plus Helga scares the living crap out of me, and I've played hockey for around 20 years.

Episodes of shows are really winding down because of the writer's strike, but NBC has an answer at least people on this site might like: more game shows! Two in particular will make people excited: 1 VS 100 and American Gladiators. We originally stated 1 VS 100 is returning on January 11th. They apparently bumped this up to January 4th. Be on the lookout for a special game on episode one. It's going to be a battle of the sexes. One man VS 100 women and then one woman VS 100 men. As for the rest of the season, all I can say is be sure to watch it. It's clear NBC doesn't have a lot of faith in this show for some reason. People really need to keep their eyes glued to the set if they want it to return for more episodes. 1 VS 100 will replace Deal or No Deal on Fridays at 8PM ET. Only bad news about 1 VS 100: they redid the prize structure again. Seriously guys, the 4th change? The last one you had was just fine. Unless you halved the money like the Aussie version, I don't see why you need a change. Also, as stated before, we have American Gladiators starting on Monday, January 7th (one day later than previously announced). It replaces Chuck, which just got a full season order, at 8PM ET. Hulk Hogan and Leila Ali host the show with mos

Family isn't here yet, so we have a quick and fantastic update. We have a return date for 1 VS 100! The highly anticipated second season of the popular Bob Saget hosted quizzer will come on Friday, January 11th. It already has a new website as well. Hopefully NBC will treat it a bit better. It gets better ratings than a lot of what NBC shows and is shoved to the side always. We'll get pictures of the new/updated set soon. American Gladiators also debuts on NBC on January 6th.

As much hell as I give Dancing With the Stars (and believe me it deserves to be given hell), it does seem like a decent place for D-list celebrities to go and revive their career. With Hulk Hogan as the lead host of NBC's American Gladiators, it was announced that Laila Ali will be by his side as co-host. She stated in a line that clearly sounds she was told to say it, “It’s an honor to be reintroducing this American classic to a new generation of fans.” No word on the air date for the revival of American Gladiators, though we'd expect it to be on before 1 VS 100 which is still in limbo as shows like Phenomenon fail miserably.
