Ken Jennings to Appear on PlayCafe

Here’s a nice little surprise for all you PlayCafe fans out there. Ken Jennings, the Jeopardy! champion who you’d have to be under a rock not to know about, will be making an appearance on the first internet TV network for game shows on Monday at 6PM PT. He will be playing the game along with everyone else at home to see if he’s still smarter than the players. Click here to play along and get involved.

PlayCafe.com streams live, online casual games that let anyone play as a contestant. Members can compete in a variety of games, chat live with hosts and other players, form teams, call the studio, contribute questions, and win a variety of prizes, including iTunes songs, Nintendo Wiis and up to $1,000 in cash. “Ken Jennings is a legend in game shows, and having him play against and chat with people everywhere is a hint of what PlayCafe.com can make possible” said Mark Goldenson, CEO of PlayCafe.com.

REVIEW: Ludia’s “The Price is Right”

Do you remember when we talked about a “Price” PC game in development? Well, after a long wait, it has been released to the public.

I must say, it’s pretty good. Graphics are good-looking,

There’s only a couple of minor issues. First, the prizes are video clips from actual aired shows, so there’s a very small chance that somebody playing may have that episode on tape, and can then guess the ARP exactly. Second, it would be nice to have keyboard support for typing in bids. Clicking on “hidden arrows” up and down gets the job done, but it’s not the way the average user would expect to enter numbers on a PC game.

The complete list of pricing games:

  • 3 Strikes
  • Bonkers
  • Check-Out
  • Cliffhangers
  • Flip Flop
  • Freeze Frame
  • Hole in One (or Two)
  • It’s in the Bag
  • Master Key
  • Money Game
  • Plinko
  • Punch-A-Bunch
  • Push Over
  • Race Game
  • Range Game
  • Shell Game

Overall, I give the game 4/5. Try it out first, then buy it if you like it. I certainly did. :-DLudia’s “The Price is Right” software is available as a 30-minute free trial or as a $19.99 purchase (plus applicable sales tax). Download it here.

As a tip: You can skip through Rich’s explanation of Contestant’s Row, the pricing games, etc., by clicking anywhere in the main portion of the screen. However, you cannot skip through prize descriptions (unless you bid on the first showcase, which will then produce a “Skip” button to click on during the second).

GSN Dumps “Lingo” Online Games

Word has been buzzing around for a bit that Lingo might not come back. Some more confirmation of this may have been just released as GSN removed all Lingo online games from their website. The games (and show) and the news really caused a bit of a commotion among fans. A GSN representative issued a short statement regarding it: “They had to pull the games because they don’t have the rights anymore.” They also said “We understand how important Lingo Plus in particular is to many people and regret the short notice and inconvenience this will cause fans. We will update you as soon as we know more.”

It’ll be really amazing if Lingo gets canceled.  I don’t really blame the network at all, I more place blame on Phil Gurin and the production crew.  They haven’t done anything new on the show since season two (beyond a short tournament of champions which barely counts).  The only way you could tell a season from another from season two and on is by the set.  Even now, the past three or so seasons have had the same exact set so that idea’s shot.  The show really became boring, mundane, and stale.  The sad thing is they could have tweaked the show a lot; there’s tons of potential.  Throw some cash balls in, prize balls, update the end game, bring in something new to the front game; just something.  It became robotic to watch which is a huge shame.  It wasn’t the greatest show ever, but it was a fantastic little play-at-home show.

I mean was it just me, or did the show become really really boring and stereotypical by the end of the run?  Just something new and fresh would have helped immensely.

Game Show Home Game Update

Lots of game show fans enjoy playing their favorite shows from home.  With that, we have a small update on different game shows that are recently available at home or online.  First off, what people are probably more excited about, iToys’s The Price is Right tabletop electronic game.  It’s from the same company that did the 1 VS 100 and Family Feud games, and both are really good, so this one’s bound to be fun.  It also looks like it comes with three set pieces: the Big Wheel, Hole in One, and Plinko.  No word on additional pricing games on the actual console itself now, but I’d have to imagine since playing the same two pricing games over and over is going to get really irritating.

Also, Oberon Games has launched a download-able version of Crosswords.  The game is fairly accurate to the show, or as accurate as it can be.  The spoiler system is a bit complicated, and the annoying music just loops over and over and over.  If the theme music annoys you on the show, it’s going to be worse on you playing the game.  However, it’s still pretty fun just playing along with the game and seeing how you’d do.  It’s a lot harder than it looked for me.  Click here to download the game.

“Don’t Forget the Lyrics!” Launches Online Game

We really don’t talk about FOX’s singing game show Don’t Forget the Lyrics! much because, quite frankly, there’s rarely anything ever to talk about with it. I’m a bit surprised when I get the show’s ratings as I keep forgetting it’s on. However, the show is pretty popular and with so many people wanting to try out, FOX is creating an online game where you can become a contestant and sing with host Wayne Brady.

Part of the Lyrics game allows players to upload videos of them singing various songs, which will then be browsed by FOX who can choose contestants from this database. “This is a natural extension for us as we continue to explore ways to maximize the value of our show brands,” said Max Benator, head of digital media for RDF USA. “Any production company that wants to survive in this changing media landscape should be creating for as many platforms as possible - and I’m glad we’re finding successes in doing that.”  This is very similar to how Deal or No Deal’s new casting website will work; you obviously just won’t upload videos of you singing.  Or you might, who knows; it may get you on the show.

I’m a bit stunned that Don’t Forget the Lyrics outlasted NBC’s The Singing Bee, but after thinking about it for a bit it makes sense.  The viewers are flocking towards formats which they already know and feel safe with.  The formats that have escalating prize money, lifelines, and big drama for big risks.  Lyrics, just like its other Who Wants to be a Millionaire? clone friend Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader? has this.  I really don’t think NBC primetime was the best place for The Singing Bee anyway.  It always seemed more like a syndicated game show.  I’m never one that foams at the mouth by huge money, but a show for a top prize of $50,000 seems weak compared to everything else on the market.

GSN’s “How Much Is Enough?” Online Game Launched

We couldn’t give you a video preview of GSN’s new game show How Much is Enough?, but will an online game work? The game is the exact same thing as the show (no $10,000 bonus for winning, though) except, for some reason, you play against the computer except people. GSN used to always make online multi-player games for their shows, but recently they’ve stuck to the embeddable mini games. You really don’t get the full experience of the game unless you can actually face other people. The computers are a bit more risky than you’ll see on TV. Also, don’t worry, the clock on TV moves faster so you don’t have to sit through endless minutes of $1 increases. But regardless, it’s not a bad little game and you get the idea for the show. In terms of recent GSN shows, it’s one of the more enjoyable ones in recent time, so be sure to check it out. You can click below to play the game, or click the link at the top of the post to go directly to GSN’s page and play it.

“Duel” Launches Online and Launches on ABC Tonight!

Trivia fans have another reason to be happy as ABC’s new quiz show, Duel, kicks off its six episode run all this week at 8PM ET with the finale on Sunday at 8PM ET.  Described as trivia with elements of strategy (barely any at all) and poker (none at all), players have to answer trivia questions by placing chips on what they think is the right answer.  Chips on wrong answers go into the pot which builds over the course of the tournament and will award someone with over a million dollars by the end.  Run out of chips or give one wrong answer and you’re gone.

So far the few reviews of this show (ABC really wouldn’t hand out advanced screener copies of the show unlike Bingo Night or any other show they’ve done which isn’t a good sign ever) have been less than positive, but the thing to remember is that’s a relatively enjoyable little trivia show for big prizes.  ABC blew it out of proportion a bit, but it’s still fun.  And if you want in on the fun, ABC  has something for you.

They’ve launched a new Duel online game where you can play by yourself or “against” someone else.  I put quotes around it because all you’re doing is trying to last as many questions as someone else does.  I figured it would have been like the show but sadly it’s not.  You can really get a feel for how the show plays with it.  Be sure to tell us what you think about the show tonight, and we’ll have a bigger response on Thursday…..

Because, you guessed it, I’m off to New York again to keep plugging my show.  Things are going well, though.  I know I’ve promised you details on how to do this sort of thing, and I’m sorry that I’ve shirked it.  I’ve shirked it basically because I’ve been completely shambolic recently and keep pushing it back.  However, this time we’re bringing a video camera and I’m hoping to get some video for you of my escapades.  We’ll also have a Mark L. Walberg interview this week, so stay tuned.
