Review: “Match Game” Canada Not a Home Run, Not a Strikeout
Last night, Canada's brand new Match Game revival premiered on the Comedy Network. Featuring such stars as Colin Mochrie, Yvette Nicole Brown and regular panelists Sean Cullen and Debra DiGiovanni, the show mixes the old spirit of the American series with the Quebec-based modern Atomes Crochus, an adaptation on the format for a French speaking audience. I watched the first episode and had a chance to review it. Let's talk about how the show works and what I thought of it. For some background, here's how the game is played. The show is based on the French-Canadian Match Game adaption Atomes Crochus, which in turn is based heavily on the 1990 version of Match Game. In game show communities, it's sort of a joke that Canadian game shows aren't exactly of the highest in quality or budget in contrast to their neighbors to the south. However, The Comedy Network announced today the list of panelists that will be participating in the 40 episodes of their Match Game premiering October 15th. Judging by some of the celebrities they got to participate in this new incarnation hosted by comedian Darrin Rose, that idea may not prove to be true with this program. A few fairly well-known names to most people, not just strictly Canadians, will be circulating on the panel. Click here to see the list of the full panel.

Match Game, which debuts on October 15th on Comedy Network in Canada, has named Darrin Rose the host. Darrin has appeared in Canadian comedies such as Mr. D, MuchMusic's Video on Trial, and was a part of the Toronto-based sketch comedy troupe The Sketchersons. “It’s fun to be part of such an iconic game show, if only because my dad is finally interested in my career,” said Rose. “He said ‘the new Gene Rayburn, eh? I guess now I can stop telling my friends you’re a real estate agent.’” Click here to learn more about the show and to see who is on the panel. If you remember back to June, Comedy Network in Canada announced they are producing a revival of the classic 70s game show Match Game for the network. The network will tape sixty 30-minute English-language episodes this summer from the set of the Montreal version called Atomes Crochus. While Atomes Crochus went with a more modern logo, the Comedy Network version looks to be really going back to the roots of the 1970 American version with a classic Match Game inspired logo. It's essentially the same old one updated for 2012. I'm sure that should please many of you traditionalists that roam around here. Click here to check out the logo plus a preview of the show.

We've got a quick update to our news a couple weeks ago that Match Game was being revived in North America via Canada's Comedy Network. The show is now seeking potential applicants. They are looking for Canadian contestants who are of the age of majority (18 or 19) in their province that are available to do an in-person or, potentially, a telephone audition. Remember, the program will be recorded in Montreal, Quebec so your proximity or ability to get to this area is likely pretty crucial to your chances of advancing in the audition process. If you think you have the chops to match Canada's comics, head to the official registration site and throw your hat in the ring. We definitely have some Canadian Buzzer readers so this is your shot at a good time and potentially, prizes. Give it a go!

Hey everyone. I hope you had a nice holiday weekend like I did. I have no more vacations planned for a long time it seems like, so we'll get back to the news. We're starting in Canada this week where they have a new game show on the Discovery Channel called Qubit. I'm searching for some clips of it to show you all, but thanks to reader Lidoron for the information. It's a straight up studio based quiz show (something I'd love to see Discovery in America attempt for a change) for a $10,000 top prize. Three players have to face off against each other before battling the Qube for the money. The game's pretty simple. It starts with the standard three player quiz format. Six categories are in play, each with four categories valued at i

Bad news for Crosswords fans like myself. According to multiple sources, Program Partners is putting the low rated quizzer on hiatus until 2009 because of high production costs. At this point, to be completely honest, unless GSN picks it up which I doubt they will I don't see the show coming back. Its demise leaves a very nice gap for Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader? for next season, though. It's a shame because while the show had issues it was still fun to play along with and was a fast paced intelligent quiz show; something we have barely any of now. More than 3/4ths of the country cleared the show for the new season, so it's leaving them in a bind. Program Partners is giving them a few options, one of which is pretty interesting

First off, sorry for the lack of updates recently. I have some very exciting news regarding this site and future ventures with this brand. It's a bit too early to say what, but I might be able to tell you guys next week. Over the end of last week and weekend, Canada launched their first game show channel called Game TV. According to our source, Ryan Milhalus, the channel is sort of a GSN of the north. airing such shows as Love Handles, Game On, Acting Crazy, Time Chase, The Jokes On Us & Supermarket Sweep. The channel will also include some reality shows like The Mole and Last Comic Standing. What they are doing is rather interesting. They seem to be doing the opposite of other game show channels like GSN and Challenge; they

In the week of absolutely no game show news, we finally found some! Thanks to reader Mark O. who sent us a story from the Winnipeg Sun that one of the funniest people on the planet, Colin Mochrie, will be the host of the five episode Canadian Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader? run. "We’re delighted to have Colin on board," said Barbara Williams, senior vice president of programming and production for CanWest MediaWorks in a statement. "His unrivalled wit and ability to engage and entertain audiences will be front and centre, and we look forward to all of the fun.” Episodes are being taped in Toronto this Fall and will air on Global. That means that every single Whose Line is it Anyway? regular has a show. Drew has Power of 10 (which

The first episode of the English Canadian "Deal or No Deal" achieved history on the first night: Global said that it was the highest rated Canadian program of all time on the channel. The Super Bowl had 3.4 million, and "Deal or No Deal" managed to hold on to 2.7 million of those people. On the first episode, Brian Traynor won a big $109,000. He was the first contestant out of over 120,000 applicants. You can check out a clip of Canadian "Deal or No Deal" right here. I have to say I do like their set. The maple leaf is a bit out there, but their set is pretty cool. The audience is incredibly enthusiastic as well, which is nice to see, and Howie looks really charged and refreshed; much more than he is with NBC's version.

Taping was recently completed for the English Canadian version of "Deal or No Deal", and good friend of Buzzer, Chris, has given us the low-down on changes for their edition: *More lights on stage. We're hearing it's psedu-"1 VS 100" lighting. *The main stage is in the shape of a maple leaf. That's rather amusing if you ask me. * The backdrop is obviously Canadian instead of US, complete with a "view" of the CN Tower. English Canadian "Deal or No Deal" debuts next Sunday right after the Super Bowl on Global. Also, Australia has a minor change this season. The question portion is gone. The producers will pick someone from a randomly selected block like previous times. 25 members will still be on the player's bench.
