Right as I say we haven't been covering Australia for some time we manage to get two clips. This comes courtesy of our contributor Mike Klauss, so thanks for the instant message from him. Their daily version of Deal or No Deal has been going strong since 2004. It's taken a hit due to competitor Millionaire: Hot Seat, but it's still on and still offering up to $200,000 a day to lucky contestants. As opposed to the more serious and dramatic tone of the British version, the Australian version offers a lighthearted, fun, and energetic half hour. It's easily comparable to the American syndicated edition. This past Tuesday featured an exciting game. As we join the game the board features $50, $3,000; and the top two of $100,000 and $200,000. Can the contestant go all the way and become the fourth top prize winner in the show's history? Click here to find out.

One of the show’s more infamous moments involves one of the panelists’s (Josh Thomas) grandmother. She elects to play a round called Trust Me. The game in it is Human Nacho, where missing a question dumps various nacho condiments onto a person sitting in a chair. Out of no where Josh’s grandmother elects to sit in the chair. It’s a hysterical, horrific, and great moment. Makes me wish we could get a show like this in America. Or we could have shows where morons from Jersey banging each other. Whatever.

Good morning, everyone. We took a long weekend but we’re back with lots to talk about. We’re getting closer to the debut of the Fall 2011 season so bits and pieces of news about your favorite shows are coming in.

*Who Wants to be a Millionaire will be entering its tenth syndicated season this September. Every year for the past few seasons they’ve undergone some major changes. Whether it be a clock, removal of useful lifelines, a new money chain, or a revamp like last year. This season seems to be pretty standard except for one addition. Some special days will be “Double Your Money” days.

In Double Your Money days, which come up at the discretion of the producers, one of the questions will be randomly selected to be the doubled question of the game. If you answer that question correctly the value behind the question (remember, it’s all random and independent now) is doubled and added to your bank. This means up to $50,000 can be won on a single question. If you Jump the question, you still don’t get the cash for it. This does mean, though, that playing a perfect round and being lucky enough to double the $25,000 question means your bank could eclipse $90,000. This does also mean that the first question, which could be easiest, could be worth $50,000. Interesting change. Can’t wait to see it played out, whenever that may be.

*Check the bottom of the page. If you’re a regular viewer of GSN we’ve finally updated the PDF schedules. You can find specific episode numbers and more information on there.

*According to our British correspondent @TravisAPenery, the popular BBC lottery quiz show Secret Fortune will be returning to the network on Saturday, August 20th. Secret Fortune was recently granted a million dollar pilot for CBS hosted by Donny Osmond. We’re waiting to hear word on that. We’ll be covering the British version again, though.

*Another BBC game show looks like it’s coming sometime the week of the 20th according to the press site, although I’m glad to be corrected by someone who knows more. The show is called Epic Win. Contestants try to wow three judges with some act. If they do each of the judges puts up to £1,000, secretly, for a total of £3,000 possibly. The contestant then faces a money clock sort of mechanic where dollar values keep flashing before the contestant and (s)he must claim one before the person goes too high and they leave with nothing. I like quirky talent shows but the ending seems tacked on.

*Australian Deal or No Deal had some pretty exciting games last week. Here’s one of the highlights.

Good Friday morning. The past few days have consisted of practically nothing of any use, so apologies for the lack of updates. We managed to find a few remotely interesting things. As we approach the Fall 2011 season, we'll have more interesting things to write about. Updates this morning include a foreign host of The Price is Right visiting the set and guest hosting a segment on an upcoming episode, a special salute episode of Price taping soon, and a funny and interesting clip from BBC's Pointless. Click here for all the updates.

Good Friday morning. The past few days have consisted of practically nothing of any use, so apologies for the lack of updates. We managed to find a few remotely interesting things. As we approach the Fall 2011 season, we’ll have more interesting things to write about.

*There are a few notes of interest regarding The Price is Right today. We’ll start with the more interesting one. The Price is Right has been a success all around the world, not just in America. For instance, an Australian version has aired off and on from 1981 to 2005. The most recent host was Larry Emdur. The current version on CBS, hosted by Drew Carey, has invited Larry to appear on the show and guest host a segment. Larry said, “It totally blew me out of the water and the producers couldn’t believe it either when Drew suggested it. It was just like riding a bike – it all came flooding back to me.” No word on when the episode will air yet but we’ll let you know.

*Speaking of special editions of The Price is Right, a one time episode celebrating teachers will be taping soon. This special episode tapes on Tuesday, August 9th. Are you in, near, or plan on visiting Los Angeles and a teacher? Click here to get tickets to the show.

*Veteran game show set designer Ed Flesh recently died at the age of 79 due to congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Shows Ed did work for include Wheel of Fortune, The $25,000 Pyramid, Jeopardy!, Name That Tune, and many others. Click here for a longer article courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter.

*The British game show Pointless, now airing on BBC One, had a historic moment yesterday. Take a look below. Thanks to Rob H. for the link on our Facebook page.

Did anyone expect the Australian version of Millionaire, now called Hot Seat, to survive as long as it has? Based on the description and seeing a bit, I didn't. The show is multiplayer Millionaire, to put it simplistically. Six people play. Answer right and you keep climbing the tree but miss a question and the top of the tree is knocked down and the next person in line takes your place. Each person can Pass once during the game and go to the back of the line. The game is meaningless up until the very last question and it's just not a great version of the show, so it's success on Nine, versus Deal or No Deal, is interesting. The show attempted to give away another million dollar top prize recently. See the clip and find out if they gave away the first $1,000,000 prize in the show's history.

Three people have seen the million dollar question during Hot Seat‘s run. A fourth man, Jim Graham, recently saw it. He answered 13 of the 14 questions correct. You’ll see his final three questions in the clip below. There’s no walking away on this show. He has to answer. Can he be the first person in Hot Seat history to win the million dollar top prize, or will he leave with the consolation $1,000?

A few quick things to start you off this morning.

*Who Wants to be a Millionaire will be getting its own Facebook app soon. The success of Facebook games like The Price is Right and Family Feud has lead Ludia, the creators of the Millionaire Wii game, to develop a new social media game for the hit quiz show. The game will debut Monday, March 21st, on Millionaire‘s Facebook page. It will allow you to play the game against your friends and see who is the smartest. Looks like a lot of fun. Can’t wait to see it.

*Speaking of Millionaire, Sherri Shepherd is guest hosting the show all week. Sherri is best known as the co-host of ABC’s talk show The View. Check out the show today as Sherri will be talking about her experience hosting the show. She will also introduce you to a contestant that will play on Friday, Sandy Marino-Cappello, and get her story. Check it out.

*The American version of Million Dollar Money Drop is still in limbo, but our way of doing the game is making its way around the world now. Australia is the first country to jump on the bandwagon. The now-titled The Million Dollar Drop will retain everything from the American version, including the rules, set, and presentation. The only thing it’ll take from the more popular European versions is the title. Still not sure why we threw in the word “money” in there. Australia’s The Million Dollar Drop debuts next Monday, March 21st, on Nine. It will be hosted by Millionaire: Hot Seat host Eddie McGuire.

*Lingo is still casting for contestants. They are especially looking for fans of the show who know how to play the game, which should include a large number of you. All you need is a friend or partner to play with and the ability to get to Los Angeles for an audition and taping. Feel free to be out of town as long as you can make it. Click here to email the casting producers with your full name, age, phone number, occupation, the city you live in, a recent photo, and why this is the perfect game show for you. You have to be over 18 and you cannot have played on the previous GSN version of Lingo hosted by Chuck Woolery.

We’ll be doing a few Australian features this weekend. Wanted to focus on Hot Seat today. It’s a standard episode, really. And given the big secrecy and excitement about what’s going on with the American version of Millionaire, it’s always fun to check around and see what other countries do for fun. Big money is on the line for the contestant in the video. We see a $100,000 question. While that’s OK, the more interesting thing is the newest addition to the show. They are now strapping contestants to a heart rate monitor to each contestant to see how they are doing stress wise.

It sounds like a relatively interesting idea, but it really doesn’t work out like I think they are wanting. They want to show the stress contestants are under, but not that many seem to be freaking out during the questions. Actually the contestants, on average, are more nervous talking to Eddie McGuire which may say something about him, but I digress. The host just says, “Hey, look at your heart rate!” and moves on. They even show it for the last question, and again the heart rate isn’t sky rocketing or anything. Interesting idea on paper but it’s just done strangely and did nothing for the show.

I know there are complaints, but I do have to admit that I enjoy the show. It gives away bigger money than our version of Millionaire while probably saving money in the long run. And say what you want about the one-wrong-and-out nature of the multiplayer game, but it makes for exciting television. In the grand scheme of things, that’s the only thing that matters.

The popular Australian spin-off of Who Wants to be a Millionaire called Hot Seat seems to be pretty dividing. It's clearly not the greatest game on earth but it's hard to deny there are some extremely exciting finishes. One of these situations comes from last Monday's episode. Contestant Paul Wolfenden entered the Hot Seat in the middle of the game and worked his way up through the chain. He became the third person ever to see the $1,000,000 question. Remember: in this version there is no walking away and no lifelines. Can he win the $1,000,0000? Or is he going to drop from $250,000 back to $1,000 (and remember, he can't walk away).

The Australian version of Deal or No Deal has been on the air for seven years daily now and they’ve only had one $200,000 grand prize civilian winner. That was far back in 2004. They had a celebrity win $200,000 in 2007, but it’s more exciting to see a regular player win. Following the interesting pattern of a winner every three years, a $200,000 grand prize winner was crowned this past week. It’s the first woman in Australia to win it also. Take a look below. Also, is it just me or is that final offer unbelievably weak? They were practically begging for someone to win it. It’s like they were sitting in the booth and saying, “We can’t lose to Millionaire: Hot Seat anymore, just get a winner.”

Continuing our accidental weekend of Millionaire, we’re moving to Australia and their popular spinoff Hot Seat. I’ve said it before, but for repetition’s sake here we go again: despite my initial fears the show is warming up to me. It’s just Millionaire in a different package. And frankly the package tends to be more exciting than the US version is. Take this episode for example. The show can screw good contestants over occasionally and force them to take random guesses with no strategy, but it’s hard to deny this is the most exciting episode of any version of Millionaire that has aired in a very long time. Not to mention the host, Eddie McGuire, is fantastic; it’s got a nice set; and the game just flows and plays well. It’s got a nice presentation and an exciting, pretty enjoyable game. You can’t ask for much more. Someone posted this on Twitter and in a comment and I agree: I’m a bit amazed some networks searching for a quick cheap daytime game show don’t look to this. It’s obviously popular and works.

Our next international video this weekend comes from Australia. It’s a recent episode of the Who Wants to be a Millionaire spinoff called Hot Seat. We covered it when it first came out, and I bashed it a bit. At first glance, and after watching the first episode or two, I thought it was just a poor attempt to cash in on the Millionaire name. I’ve watched a lot more of it since, and I’ve changed my mind a bit. I’m actually starting to enjoy it quite a bit. Part of it is from host Eddie McGuire, who does a fantastic job. Another part is that the game is just flat out enjoyable. It’s got the spirit of Millionaire with a new filler and it’s still one of the better new quiz shows to come out this decade.

[stream provider=video flv=x:/flashgameshows.com/wordpress/videos/hotseatpart1.flv img=x:/flashgameshows.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/hotseatpart1.jpg mp4=x:/flashgameshows.com/wordpress/videos/hotseatpart1.m4v embed=false share=false width=642 height=352 dock=true controlbar=over bandwidth=high autostart=false /]

There is some competition and strategy involved, which is nice. It’s still as exciting as Millionaire is, and moves equally as quickly if not faster without losing anything. There always seems to be a pretty decent amount of money up for grabs. I first thought the updated money chain, which is a lot cheaper than the original one, was a joke. But after watching it you can clearly see why they did it. It’s not classic Millionaire, but in terms of what they did to it, they did a good job keeping the vibe of the show and adding a few extra features. It’s got a few problems but I can count far more positives than negatives.

We've finally got an exciting and/or interesting clip to show you for this week's Weekend Replay! We're going abroad this time, over to Australia and their edition of Deal or No Deal. Aussie Deal has been going strongly daily since 2004. It's come under incredible competition recently from the Who Wants to be a Millionaire spinoff Hot Seat, but it's still doing well. It's essentially the same format as ours. The top prize is $200,000 and the people holding the cases get to guess what is inside them for a $500 prize, much like the Dutch version. Where it becomes different (and superior) to ours is the variety of sub-games they have. One is Chance, where a player who has previously taken a Deal and plays the "What Would Have Happened" ending down to two cases has the option to give back the Deal to open his or her case. The British use this as "Banker's Gamble".
