One of my favorite shows of this decade is Dirty Rotten Cheater, which around fifteen people saw. I was pretty happy when I heard BBC was reviving the show, but a bit let down when I saw the final product. It seems like quite a step down from what we saw on PAX. I can stand a smaller budget, but it just didn’t seem to click this time. However, the game’s still pretty fun. Check out England’s take on our cult favorite.
We’ll be away for the next few days, so have a nice holiday weekend. I swear we’ll post news once some actually comes in. March has been a horrendously slow month.
This post is going to start a new regular series we’re going to call “The British Are Better Than Us.”
We’ll have a look at more game play tomorrow, but for now, enjoy the first ten minutes of ITV’s version of Duel. Another show the British just do better than us, go figure. Their host is much better, music a bit nicer, the game is much quicker, and I definitely enjoy the all-around game play more. The set is up in the air, but the space like look for questions is rather cool. Check it out and we’ll try to get another part, including the ability to stop, up tomorrow.
No US news at all today, but we will have a small preview of The Moment of Truth sometime next week. England has had a lot of fun game show news, though. One of my favorite shows that the US completely screwed up, Weakest Link, will be moving to the main BBC station next month. It’s been on BBC2 for quite a few years. The UK version is absolutely supreme to ours in nearly every way possible, and if you haven’t checked it out you really owe it to yourself.
Also, Duel starts its UK run on Saturday. The show is basically the same gameplay wise as our version, though they ditched the tournament. Probably a good move, as it just did not work here at all. I was bored until the final night (and even then still a bit bored), as hypothetical risks were being thrown around. Chips are worth £1,000 added to a jackpot which starts at £100,000. If you win two duels, you can stop with either potentially £10,000 or 10% of the jackpot. After three wins, you can stop with £20,000 or maybe 20% of the jackpot. If you win four duels, you win the entire jackpot. We’ll get a video of it for you next week hopefully.
Shocked by the headline? Trust me, I was too, and it may get even more shocking. GSN’s short-lived game show, Whammy!, has apparently been picked up in the Philippines and possibly many more countries. The show begins daily on GMA-7 starting on October 8th and is being hosted by Paolo Bediones and Rufa Mae Quinto. It seems like it will compete directly against their version of Deal or No Deal, but we will try to find out.
This part may be old or horribly made up, but who knows. In the release, it also says that United Kingdom, Taiwan, Australia, Germany, and Turkey bought the rights to air a local version. I know we have quite a few British and Australian readers, so be on the lookout. I’ve never heard of any other country getting this show, so this could possibly be from a few years ago and the contract expired. However, the way it’s worded is leading me to believe that our British friends might be getting their first ever taste of the Whammy.
How many fans of the GSN series of the show do we have here? It’s been running in the daytime recently on the network. The first season was god awful. However, the second season really started to click (with the exception of The Newtron 2000). Nice set, the money went up a bit, you could read the board, and the Big Bank was just cool. The only outstanding thing in any series to me were the Whammies. I just liked the CGI better than the cheesy 2D graphics. Plus I liked Whammy!’s car game.
Sorry for the lack of any updates recently. There has literally been no actual news the past few days, but we did find something. We’ll do a feature on some of the pilot rules for the new Temptation this weekend.
BBC News announced that Channel4, the British network that airs Deal or No Deal, is suspending their phone in games after many recent problems have been exposed; most recently, a competition on the Richard & Judy show urged people to continue to spend money and phone in after the winners had been picked. Sounds a tiny bit like the clock on Playmania, doesn’t it? Deal or No Deal is said to continue the game, though, with profits going to charity. However, one has to wonder if they are continuing this for now because they already taped episodes for the new season with the plug in the middle of the show. I’d be interested to see if they get rid of it with the most recently taped episodes.
Situations like this could be easily avoided with a lawyer on the set like ours. However, how long until certain organizations begin to probe the US phone-in games. Interestingly the only shows that have the text games anymore are Deal or No Deal and 1 VS 100. Shows like Playmania just need to take special care that nothing shady goes on. For shady, see the video we posted a few days ago.
The original British edition of the hit game show Who Wants to be a Millionaire? might be facing cancellation, according to host Chris Tarrant. The show, which launched in 1998, was stripped weekly and saw audiences as high as 13 million viewers. It is now in a regular Saturday time slot and gets around 3.1 million viewers per episode. Host Chris Tarrant has stated, “Of course, next year is our tenth anniversary and we may play about with it, we might move it off Saturday nights . . . or it might be a good place to stop.”
One idea which has also been tossed around is moving the show to a 5PM weekday time slot. ITV is denying the cancellation claim, though. Chris Tarrant has signed on to host a bluffing quiz show opposite Deal or No Deal. To our UK friends: do you think if Millionaire adopted a US style of show, which is basically lowering some parts of the chain a bit and making the game really hard, they could have some new success versus Deal or No Deal?
British Deal or No Deal is taking our 100th episode and making it their 500th. The 500th episode of Deal or No Deal, which will air on June 29th, will feature an audience of all former contestants, including Laura Pearce, the first £250,000 winner; Nick Bairn, the first 1p winner; and one of our favorites: Bunney, who won £110,000. However, Laura’s win might soon be trumped by the 500th episode winner’s top prize, a possible £500,000. Be on the lookout for it. It’ll appear on YouTube somewhere down the line.
I can only imagine what they’ll do if someone wins 1p on this episode. Perhaps they will just give them £30,000 for no reason.
A bit ago, it was announced that British channel Sky One purchased Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader?, now titled Are You Smarter Than a 10-Year-Old for them, for a daytime and primetime run. It has now been confirmed that Deal or No Deal host Noel Edmonds will take the lead of this show. The top prize is £250,000.
One minor note of annoyance: BBC News is yet another place that says this show pits adults against kids. We said that in press releases for while as well in America. Let’s as least get the format right, people. People who auditioned poorly for the show face off against themselves for a prize they don’t deserve.
It’s not the US version, but trust me, the UK version is close enough. The amazing WeDigTV has launched an absolutely amazing broadband version of The Price is Right based off the newest UK edition with host Joe Pasquale. Come on down to contestants row and bid on various small prices. Be the closest without going over and you get to play one of many many pricing games such as Safe Cracker, Any Number, and more. After all three rounds are over, you get to spin the Showcase Showdown wheel and get over a certain point threshold that lowers the more pricing games you win. Get over the threshold and play the Showcase. The Showcase is different than our version. In this version you push a button to get a certain pound range you can be away from the total price of your showcase. If you can get within the range without going over you win your Showcase. It’s a boatload of fun and very impressive with amazing graphics and video clips from the actual show. They seriously have possibly the best computer game shows available so you’d be a fool not to check it out. What do you all think? CLICK HERE TO PLAY
Yet another case of England getting all the good shows. England’s version of GSN, Challenge, has announced they plan on creating their own series of the 2waytraffic format That’s The Question which graced our television screens not too long ago before being dumped. The winner will walk away with £1,500 in this version. Correct answers will have the contestants go further to the next round, and each round has a cash prize. The best two contestants will return for the Superfinals. Screentests will take place on February 24 & 25. If you are from England and would like to participate, email here with the heading “That’s The Question”. Just amazing. We get stuck with Chain Reaction and they get shows that were pretty good like this. Yeah, there were spelling errors, but those are easy to fix.
