New Canadian Game Show Channel Launches

First off, sorry for the lack of updates recently. I have some very exciting news regarding this site and future ventures with this brand. It’s a bit too early to say what, but I might be able to tell you guys next week.

Over the end of last week and weekend, Canada launched their first game show channel called Game TV. According to our source, Ryan Milhalus, the channel is sort of a GSN of the north. airing such shows as Love Handles, Game On, Acting Crazy, Time Chase, The Jokes On Us & Supermarket Sweep. The channel will also include some reality shows like The Mole and Last Comic Standing.

What they are doing is rather interesting. They seem to be doing the opposite of other game show channels like GSN and Challenge; they are starting out with a large reality presence from the start along with game shows. Do you think this move is good? I can see this working out much better than the rebranded channels. People will be used to those shows being around. They won’t have them suddenly thrown upon theme.

Colin Mochrie Hosts Canadian “Fifth Grader”

In the week of absolutely no game show news, we finally found some!  Thanks to reader Mark O. who sent us a story from the Winnipeg Sun that one of the funniest people on the planet, Colin Mochrie, will be the host of the five episode Canadian Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader? run. “We’re delighted to have Colin on board,” said Barbara Williams, senior vice president of programming and production for CanWest MediaWorks in a statement. “His unrivalled wit and ability to engage and entertain audiences will be front and centre, and we look forward to all of the fun.”  Episodes are being taped in Toronto this Fall and will air on Global.

That means that every single Whose Line is it Anyway? regular has a show.  Drew has Power of 10 (which will probably return in the Fall) and The Price is Right, Wayne has Don’t Forget the Lyrics, and Colin has this.  What’s Ryan been up to recently?  I’d love to see him back on TV somewhere.

“Deal or No Deal Canada” Scores Big on Super Bowl Sunday

The first episode of the English Canadian “Deal or No Deal” achieved history on the first night: Global said that it was the highest rated Canadian program of all time on the channel. The Super Bowl had 3.4 million, and “Deal or No Deal” managed to hold on to 2.7 million of those people. On the first episode, Brian Traynor won a big $109,000. He was the first contestant out of over 120,000 applicants.  You can check out a clip of Canadian “Deal or No Deal” right here.  I have to say I do like their set.  The maple leaf is a bit out there, but their set is pretty cool.  The audience is incredibly enthusiastic as well, which is nice to see, and Howie looks really charged and refreshed; much more than he is with NBC’s version.

Canadian and Australian “Deal or No Deal” Alterations

Taping was recently completed for the English Canadian version of “Deal or No Deal”, and good friend of Buzzer, Chris, has given us the low-down on changes for their edition:

*More lights on stage.  We’re hearing it’s psedu-”1 VS 100″ lighting.
*The main stage is in the shape of a maple leaf.  That’s rather amusing if you ask me.

* The backdrop is obviously Canadian instead of US, complete with a “view” of the CN Tower.  English Canadian “Deal or No Deal” debuts next Sunday right after the Super Bowl on Global.

Also, Australia has a minor change this season. The question portion is gone.  The producers will pick someone from a randomly selected block like previous times.  25 members will still be on the player’s bench.

Canadian “Deal or No Deal” Launches on Super Bowl Sunday

Canada has a terrific launch date for their version of “Deal or No Deal”: Super Bowl Sunday. The show will air directly following Super Bowl XLI on February 4th. The remaining four episodes will air every Thursday at 9PM starting February 8th on Global in Canada. This means extremely fast editing from them, since their shows tape on January 23rd, 24th, and 25th. Scott St. John is involved in this version of the show, as is director R. Brian Dipirro.

Edit: Wow, can’t believe I forgot this. Howie Mandel is hosting this version as well.

Quebec Gets Own Version of “Deal or No Deal”

TVA announced about a day or two ago that they will be getting their own version of “Deal or No Deal”, called “The Banker”.  As far as we can tell, it’s going to be basically the same game as every country on earth and, as it’s looking now, taking on the US look.  Early reports are that the top prize will be $250,000, but that of course can change at any moment.  Stay tuned for more information.  You can try out by reading the info from the TVA website.

“Deal or No Deal” Canada Casting Call

Alliteration everywhere in that title. If my Canadian friends didn’t keep telling me about this, I’d constantly forget to post about it. Canadians can now audition to be on their version of “Deal or No Deal” which will star Howie Mandel. If you want your chance at $1,000,000; or maybe if you want a penny, who knows; click the link below to get started and good luck!

Canuck Runs Amock

I couldn’t even begin to figure this one out, but here we go. A woman has sued famed Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek in connection with the disappearance of a $100,000 race horse that was to be delivered to his central California breeding farm. The article goes on to say that the horse was allegedly euthanized, but no one remembers killing the darn thing. A spokesman for Trebek’s breeding farm could not be reached for comment at the time of the article’s publishing. This is creepy. “What is, Alex’s fascination with the equine?” That is correct. You can read the article by clicking below.
