The Cube Returns

British television listings have confirmed the second series of ITV's hit show, The Cube returns for their second series on Sunday 19th September, at 6.45pm on ITV1 and ITVHD. For those who don't know, The Cube features contestants who could win up to £250,000 by completing, simple but complex games inside a large persplex cube. The games can be anything, such as counting up to 10 seconds in your head, bouncing a ball into a container, walking in a straight line while blindfolded and counting red squares on the floor. The second series will once again be fronted by former Winning Lines and current This Morning host, Phillip Schofield. The new series will feature a mixture of brand new games and previous games from the first series. The e

Returning British Game Shows

As the autumn/fall draws near, some popular British show are returning for new series. Here is a rundown of what is to come in the next few days. Pointless returns tomorrow (4.30pm BBC 2) for their third series. The popular BBC2 daytime quiz is returning with an extended fifty episode run. The third series will feature some format changes to the first and second series. While the first and jackpot rounds stays intact, the changes includes a new second round where contestants have to match items, such as a musician to their instrument or a movie to their tagline. While the head to head has now been reduced from best of five to best of three.  Although the head to head will reduce some questions, there will be more time for Alexander Armst

UK Millionaire’s New Format Thumbnail

UK Millionaire’s New Format

Throughout the past few months there has been much speculation on the original version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire? with the format having a revamp. TV listings have now confirmed the new format will appear on ITV1 from Tuesday 3rd August at 8pm. This has posed questions from the broadcaster that the 8pm Tuesday slot hasn't been performing well in recent months. Having a revived format being launched in the summer in a non-performing slot clearly shows that ITV are no longer interested in the twelve year old show. Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, hosted by Chris Tarrant peaked at 19.2 million viewers in 1999, while in recent months the show has now dropped to around 3-4 million. The new format features some elements from the US clock

Apply for BuzzerBlog’s Podcast Game Show “Double Cross”!

I'm always looking to do a podcast since I love this new technology stuff.  However I just get really bored with the generic "talk about game shows" sort of thing.  Our friends at the sister-site Game Show NewsNet do it far better than I ever can with We Love To Interrupt.  I've been looking to do something new, and I think we have it.  We come to you with Double Cross: Presented by QuizQuizQuiz, the first game show ever done in podcast format. If you're over 18 and from any English speaking country, you can play.  It's a different kind of quiz show.  It doesn't just involve your knowledge.  If you can convince people that a wrong answer is actually correct, you may end up winning the game.  We're giving away cash and prizes to winners.

Donate for the Haiti Earthquake Disaster Fund

We'll have some updates later, but there have been far more important things going on in the world. As most of you are aware of there was a massive earthquake in Haiti potentially killing tens of thousands if not more. It's just unbelievable to look at and a tragedy of ungodly proportions. There's no way I can talk about something as stupid as game shows with this going on, which actually matters. A large number of people want to help, and there is an easy way. The American Red Cross is asking for donations to help the people of Haiti cope with this disaster. You can click this link to donate to the Red Cross (or the picture for Salvation Army) to go to the donation site. You can also text "Haiti" to 90999 to donate $10 to Red Cross.

“Our Little Genius” Update: Audience Reports of Questionable Activity Thumbnail

“Our Little Genius” Update: Audience Reports of Questionable Activity

The situation on Fox's now-canceled quiz show Our Little Genius is pretty bad. It would have been larger news if the NBC late night ordeal wasn't happening at the same time. To bring people up to speed if you are behind: Fox pulled Our Little Genius less than a week before its debut because there was an, "issue with how some information was relayed to contestants during...pre-production," according to executive producer Mark Burnett. Some audience reports from Hollywood Junket are shedding some more light on this.

Fox Drops “Our Little Genius”, Contestants Briefed Too Much? Thumbnail

Fox Drops “Our Little Genius”, Contestants Briefed Too Much?

We've gotten just about as close as we can to a quiz show scandal as we can these days. Out of no where Fox has dropped the much-hyped quiz show Our Little Genius. It's not clear if it's a clear cancelation at this point or if it's just being redone. Now comes the really interesting part. The show wasn't dropped because of lack of confidence. Our Little Genius has been removed from the schedule because of concerns about information given to contestants during preproduction about what topics they would see during the game. All of this is according to the New York Times.

What Are Your Favorite Moments of the Decade?

I'm not a huge fan of those lists that are sweeping generalizations with little insight other than, "Look how many YouTube hits it has!  It has to be the best!"  Having said that I will probably start making some just in case some are needed. But the main thing is everyone lists are different and you are sure to piss off dozens of people saying, "These are the best lists and if you don't like it, tough." It's why I'm really interested in what you have to say. The decade of game shows is over. Just about everything is in reruns until 2010 now basically and nothing else major is going to happen. So what are your favorite moments of the decade? There's a YouTube feature in comments so if you find a video feel free to post it. I'm going to post mine obviously because you can't shut me up, but I'm more curious about what your favorite moments or events of the decade were. Mine's a personal list and I can't wait to see what your personal lists are. I'm just going with five: WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE MOMENTS OR EVENTS OF THE DECADE OF GAME SHOWS? *The Daytime Game Show Revitalization: I really never thought we would see a shakeup or a giant debacle in the terms of daytime game shows. First comes Bob Barker retiring from The Price is Right, which I never thought would happen as well. Drew Carey comes in and made the show his own fantastically. It had a small rough patch but I still get a giant smile on my face when I see Drew walk through the doors. He and Rich Fields and the new crew have really turned that show around to be something special again, and they cannot be thanked enough. But the biggest shock came from the inclusion of Let's Make A Deal which has been fantastic. Then comes the news that it's doing well, another soap opera is on its way out, and there's a chance we may be getting a third game in daytime. It's all been really sudden and very welcomed. This decade really showed that game shows are important to networks and not these time fillers. They are popular, economically sound, and enjoyable for everyone. It's been the biggest genre thrill for me. *Maria Lay wins $100,000 on GSN's Russian Roulette: The old GSN original Russian Roulette is the show that made me want to work in the genre. Before then all shows were pretty similar and you stood behind a podium and answered questions. That wasn't great inspiration for me. Then, suddenly, a show comes along where people can drop through a hole in the floor. I was sold right there. The show had all the tension, nerves, luck, quiz elements, and excitement in a show that I want to see in my shows.  The epitome of this was Maria Lay's top prize win from season two.  I think this show had more of an effect on the genre than it's given credit for. *Raul loses $263,000 on 1 VS 100: Sadly NBC's 1 VS 100 was shortlived but I firmly believed it proved that hard quiz shows could still work.  That was followed by NBC deciding to pansy up the game in season two.  We wouldn't have seen a lot of the quizzes on TV now without it.  Without a doubt the most exciting moment from the show was Raul's $263,000 gamble.  The reaction of the audience to the question is something I won't forget. Pat Kiernan Starts Online Pop Culture Quiz

If you're a game show fan, you may know who Pat Kiernan is.  If you're a New Yorkers, you probably know who he is also.  Pat was the host of The WB game Studio 7 as well as, for two seasons, VH1's incredibly fun World Series of Pop Culture which I would love to see appear some time soon.  Pat is starting a new daily trivia quiz every day on his blog Pat's Papers, which you should definitely check out. Each day at 11:30AM ET Pat will post a pop culture trivia question which you obviously then have to answer correctly.  For the first week he will randomly pick one of the first ten to do so, and they will get an Amazon gift card.  For example, a sample question of today is, "In the classic TV version of “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” the grandfatherly narrator is played by whom?"  You'd go to his site and be quick about answering.  $25 gift cards available.  Great for the Holidays. His first quiz is now live, so click here to check it out.

Ken Ober: 1957-2009 Thumbnail

Ken Ober: 1957-2009

Very sad and shocking news this morning.  Ken Ober, the host of the popular and influential MTV game show Remote Control as well as the incredibly fun short lived word game Smush (in addition to many others) died at the age of 52.  As of this scheduled publication at midnight his death is unknown.  Ken's manager Lee Kernis said he was found dead on Sunday after complaining of a headache and flu-like symptoms the previous day. As we said Ken hosted the incredibly popular MTV game show Remote Control which ran for five seasons.  I don't fully remember the show beyond a few clips but it's clear he was incredibly good at hosting.  His other show I really remember was the USA game show Smush. I know him more for his comedy, though, which he showed brilliantly in both of these shows and everything else he did.  Recently he was a supervising producer on Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn (in addition to appearing on it), and he was also a producer on the hit CBS sitcom The New Adventures of Old Christine. It's always sad to see anyone go, let alone in our genre.  We wish our best to all his friends and family, and anyone else affected by his sudden death.  Here are a few clips of his shows that we could find to showcase  his talent.  Thanks to James Craven and Doug Morris for first tipping me on this.
