Weekend Replay: “Duel”

Tomorrow is the launch of Fox's new quiz show Million Dollar Money Drop.  Even if the show isn't perfect, there's a lot riding on it.  It's success can always lead to a new influx of primetime games.  Money Drop's impending debut does bring back memories of one failed ABC quiz show with nearly the same game mechanics.  Many of you probably remember it.  That show was Duel.  Duel was similar, but took a more poker-oriented view to the game. Click here to read more about the various versions of Duel and see clips of the show.

ABC To Air Remaining “Duel” Episodes

ABC's website says that Mike Greenberg, sans pen, returns to the airwaves with previously unaired episodes starting Friday, June 27 at 9/8c.  Prediction: It gets better ratings than "Wipeout" or "Japanese Game Show."

“Duel” Season Two Rules Preview Thumbnail

“Duel” Season Two Rules Preview

Thanks to an email from reader Bob Hagh, we have the rules for season two of ABC's Duel which is somehow magically coming back next Friday, April 4th, at 9:00PM ET. It seems like they've taken a portion of both end games of the British version. The game's basically staying the same. After each game, you get to answer the "Max Moment Question" just to throw a bit more shameless product promotion in there. If you're right you double the money you've earned. You have the chance to leave with your money after each duel, or you can risk it all and play another opponent that you select. If you win five duels, you win $500,000. What remains to be seen is if you can double that $500,000 to $1,000,000. That might be a bit of a contradiction ri

A Few Bits of News Thumbnail

A Few Bits of News

Sorry for no updates recently, there's barely been anything and I've been exhausted the past few days.  It's been a long month. *FOX wasn't lying about the Human Tetris Japanese show remake of Hole in the Wall, were they?  We've got a casting notice now.  It seems like, oddly enough, they are taping in Australia.  For any Aussies we have reading this, is there a version of the show down there somewhere?  I have no idea why we're going down there, but oh well. *ABC is casting heavily for season two of Duel right now.  They are stressing the prize is "up to a million bucks in cash prizes", so I'm taking a tiny guess that we're getting some form of a money chain.  And that could be a lot worse; It could be a tournament again.  The rest o

Rumor Control: “Duel” Renewed? Thumbnail

Rumor Control: “Duel” Renewed?

Update: ABC gave us a response with sadly not much more information beyond "chatter rumors, nothing to confirm," so it's at least being thought of making the Craigslist post a bit more believable.  Still a rumor until we get some official confirmation, though. ABC never fails to shock me with renewals. Craigslist just posted a new casting notice for season two of Duel. Still no confirmation as of yet, but we'll try to find it out as soon as possible. In the season two casting notice there's no mention of a huge cash jackpot like there was for season one. All it says is "huge cash prize for winners." Maybe we switched to the British version in terms of how to get the jackpot? I enjoy the basic idea of Duel, but ABC completely scre

Glimpse at UK “Duel” Part One

This post is going to start a new regular series we're going to call "The British Are Better Than Us." We'll have a look at more game play tomorrow, but for now, enjoy the first ten minutes of ITV's version of Duel. Another show the British just do better than us, go figure. Their host is much better, music a bit nicer, the game is much quicker, and I definitely enjoy the all-around game play more. The set is up in the air, but the space like look for questions is rather cool. Check it out and we'll try to get another part, including the ability to stop, up tomorrow.

“Duel” Launches Online and Launches on ABC Tonight! Thumbnail

“Duel” Launches Online and Launches on ABC Tonight!

Trivia fans have another reason to be happy as ABC's new quiz show, Duel, kicks off its six episode run all this week at 8PM ET with the finale on Sunday at 8PM ET.  Described as trivia with elements of strategy (barely any at all) and poker (none at all), players have to answer trivia questions by placing chips on what they think is the right answer.  Chips on wrong answers go into the pot which builds over the course of the tournament and will award someone with over a million dollars by the end.  Run out of chips or give one wrong answer and you're gone. So far the few reviews of this show (ABC really wouldn't hand out advanced screener copies of the show unlike Bingo Night or any other show they've done which isn't a good sign ever)

ABC Launches Sneak Peek of “Duel” Thumbnail

ABC Launches Sneak Peek of “Duel”

If you check out ABC's website for their new game show tournament Duel, you can find a lot of new video clips. You can click here to see it also. One in particular is a two-question sneak peek of the show along with a video explaining the rules. For those who aren't watching the clips, let's do a quick rules explanation. The player in control chooses an opponent. They each have 10 chips. Host reads a question, the players have as much time as they want to place a chip on every answer they think it is (they can put a chip on all four answers if they want). After they are done, they hit a green button to lock in. The right and wrong answers are shown. All right answer chips are returned to the player and wrong answer chips are take

Week Long “Duel” Event in December on ABC Thumbnail

Week Long “Duel” Event in December on ABC

Before even taping episodes, ABC has announced the debut date of their new trivia/bluffing/strategy game Duel.  The show will be seen as a week long event, much like ABC originally did Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, from December 17th through the 23rd at 8PM ET.  There is no word of a host yet.  If you want to get a brief idea of some game play, just imagine trivia mixed in with the tense betting of poker.  Sources are telling us it's a very interesting and fantastic game as done in run-throughs, but it might be difficult to get the internal thinking of players, much like in poker. Also, one of our personal favorite hosts, Mark Walberg, and his new vehicle The Moment of Truth will be seen on January 23rd at 9PM ET.  We are still waiting

“Duel” Rules and Information Thumbnail

“Duel” Rules and Information

We have some information on ABC's new game show Duel thanks to the amazing people at Bother's Bar. Specifically Tom H. who posted a preview of the British version. It looks like an extremely fun show, which is more than can be said for 75% of the shows recently. Take a look at Bother's Bar or below. More details leaking through on the particularities of the format of ITV1's Duel (which will air on Saturday nights in the spring): pairs of players will face each other in a gladiatorial arena, separated by a partially-obscuring partition in the centre - each player is given 10 chips. They will then be given Millionaire-style ABCD multiple-choice questions, and must make sure they have their chip on the right answer (so if they don't know,

ABC Picks Up “Duel” Thumbnail

ABC Picks Up “Duel”

Updated from a previous story: ABC has officially picked up a French format called “Duel”. According to sources from Bother’s Bar, the show sees contestants going head-to-head answering Who Wants to be a Millionaire?-like trivia questions. A wrong answer eliminates you but a right answer doubles your money. If you win the “Duel”, you have the choice to stop with your money or play more contestants. A contestant who wins five “Duels” wins the jackpot. It’s a “Big Money” show, so it’s going to be either $1,000,000 or maybe Power of 10 has started a prize war. ABC announced it today, according to B&C.  Ten episodes have been ordered. I’m going to go 50/50 on my rant with how braindead ABC is here.  First off, thankfully they picked up a
