I got an email today from the fantastic people (basically partners at this point) at Hollywood Junket who have recently visited the final days of taping at GSN’s new original Catch-21. GSN could really use a hit game show badly. They haven’t had anything in a while. This show seems like it could be a big player for them. Was it? I believe it is, but judge for yourself from the information given.
It’s multi-player blackjack with questions thrown in basically. A question is given; buzz in to answer. If you’re right, you get a card which you can either keep or pass to an opponent. You can freeze if you want, protecting your point total, before you hit 21. The goal is to, as the title suggests, catch 21 before your opponents do to win the round. Highest total at the end also wins. If you bust, you’re out of the round. Lowest score at the end of two rounds leaves the game, but the winner of the third round plays the end game for $25,000. You’re dealt three hands of blackjack and just have to catch 21. If you catch 21 once, you get $1,000. The second 21 nets you an additional $5,000 for a total of six grand. Getting that third and final 21 gives you a total of $25,000. It’s tough, but possible. You can stop at any time but if you bust, you leave with nothing.
Some interesting notes. The host is the former co-star of Fresh Price of Bel-Air Alfonso Ribiero and the card handler is Mikki Padilla. The questions are multiple choice; 3 choices. If two players miss, they just move on to the next question; the third player does not get the card by default. They are actually making you earn your cards here which is a very interesting and cool twist. The set, also as you can see, is incredibly colorful and basically the opposite of everything on TV today. Thank god someone went outside of the box for a change. So in review, this is the Casino pilot from more than five years ago that we covered on this site last year if you were around then, just with the budget divided in four everywhere. It looks to be very fun, but how does it play out on TV? We’ll show you soon.
It’s a full news day here, guys. Coming up later today we have a set review of Celebrity Family Feud again from the great people at Hollywood Junket as well as more casting notices for Trivial Pursuit: America Plays.

I love that a game show set finally decided to incorporate bulb lights into the backdrop, instead of the chasing LEDs that we see everywhere.
It’s retro, but not for kitsch. And I like it! Would be nice to see this one succeed, and not just become another 13-week wonder.

personally I don’t like the set I think it’s TOO colorful. But at least they didn’t copy the blueprints from the millionaire set like everyone else does.
I’ve seen the casino pilot and I liked it so yeah, hopefully this will be a hit, I think Alfonso will do fine as host I admit he wouldn’t have been my first choice but he should do fine.

Nice looking set! Bright and fun. Kind of makes me hungry for Italian ice, or cotton candy. :p
I think this show will be a hit, but we’ll see. I’m rooting for it!

Alfonso is running out of royalties from endless Fresh Prince reruns, I take it? :P Actually, I think he’s a pretty good choice for a host. On paper, he seems like a better choice than Corbin Bernsen or Patrick Duffy.
The set reminds me some of Karn Feud (whose set I liked).
I can see this show lasting a season or two, but I don’t know if it can go on as long as Lingo did.

OK, I’ll get the biggest one out of the way. THIS SET ROCKS! It’s the anti-set, it screams liveliness and fun, and I love it! I’ve seen Alfonso a few times on TV as himself, and his biggest challenge would be to keep up the energy the show suggests. I’m oping he can do it. I like the idea of this show, and I hope it gets off the ground for a season or 2, Or 3, 4, 5, heck, I want this to succeed!

Looks promising - could go to syndication if GSN has mixed reaction.
It also gets Alfonso Ribiero out of that moving company job in Quahog
(heh heh heh heh heh heh). My God, THIS COULD ACTUALLY WORK!!!!!

I like the set. Once in a while a colorful set is neat. the set is different than most sets these days and I like it.

Great set. But I don’t doubt that Alfonso Ribiero would make a good game show host(I wonder if he’ll do the Carlton dance? lol). He’s the complete opposite of Ahmad Rashad, who I thought did a terrible job hosting The Mole. And MikeSant318, dap on the Family Guy reference where he was a moving guy,IMO, that was (and still is) funny the first time I saw that episode. As far as the show’s longevity goes, I can’t really predict it, I’d have to watch the first few episode, but if I was under pressure to, I think it would last, probably not as long as Lingo.

The podiums remind me of the old Jeopardy! podiums

Another person I’ve never heard of before. lol I hope this game succeeds for GSN because it looks great, sounds great and I’m really glad the name was changed to Catch-21. That’s a way better name for a Gambit revival than uninspiring “Casino.”

It’s about time we saw a game show set that LOOKS like a game show set, and not a cross between the inside of a starfighter and a strip joint. Now, if only we could see the return of those (please humor me, and try to imagine a sense of wistfulness in what you’re about to read when you get past this point. OK?….Then get ready, now…..Here…..We…GO!) “real” scoring devices with “eggcrate” readouts, then we all know the “braintrust” involved here would really be onto something!!!
Also, one would have to believe that since he’s an actor by trade (when he was a kid, he starred on Broadway in a musical called “The Tap Dance Kid”) Alfonso Ribiero would make a terriffic emcee. I mean, some of you may or may not remember the late Larry Blyden; an actor who became a swell game show host on the ’70s version of WHAT’S MY LINE? If not, then nobody who reads this blog can say they’ve never heard of Bert Convy! (who was also an actor, by trade)

I’d be remissed if I didn’t mention Larry Blyden also hosted a game show (I think his first) in the late ’60s called “Personality,” which was created and produced by Bob Stewart, and aired on NBC…

Everyone compares this game to the “Casino” pilot; can someone briefly explain this, for someone who hasn’t seen it? I am familiar with “Gambit,” and its redneck cousin “Top Card,” but I don’t know how “Casino” relates to all this.

Erskine, thanks for mentioning TOP CARD. I forgot all about that one (with good reason, maybe?)

I think there are only a couple of changes from Casino to Catch-21 (besides the prize budget)-
-In Casino, you had to answer a freeze question if you wanted to freeze a hand. I don’t think that’s the case here, you can stop when you get a card.
-The bonus round in Casino was slightly different. You got one up card for each of three hands, plus three down cards. You were asked four questions- each correct answer won one additional down card. You then chose down cards from a rack and after it was shown, you placed it on a hand. Each hand had a prize- to win the prize, you needed 18 or higher. If you got 21, you won the prize and bonus money, and 3 21’s won the jackpot as well as the prizes. One other difference is that once you saw a card, you had to play it, even if you had to bust a hand and lose. I think I read somewhere there will be an option to pass cards in this new version (something about “power chips” earned in the game I think), plus no limit as to how many cards it takes to form the hands…
