“Catch-21″ Replaces Lingo; More GSN Schedule Changes

Edit: I really didn’t think this would be that big of a deal, but 5:30 is still Richard Karn’s Family Feud.  If I didn’t write about a change in that specific time slot, it’s the original one.  It’s kind of stupid to have Karn Feud/Chain Reaction/Karn Feud though, isn’t it?

GSN’s doing a major schedule shuffle on July 21st. Good news for the few good originals the network shows anymore: Russian Roulette and Whammy! are basically the only shows keeping their time slots and not moving around which basically shows they are getting some form of good rating.

The most telling schedule change coincides with the demise and probable cancellation of Lingo. GSN’s new blackjack game show, Catch-21 (working title), which is a slightly retooled format of the show Casino pitched to them more than five years ago, will be airing weekdays at 7:30PM ET. The theming of a Bingo America/Lingo hour was basically a straight layup for them, but it never worked out. Catch-21 (wt) will also take the place of Chain Reaction, having encore episodes at 11PM ET. The five people who enjoy the new edition of the show will hold memorial services I’m sure. Catch-21 will take the place of Russian Roulette and Whammy! only on Sundays from 10PM to 11PM. Again, all the other airings of the two popular GSN originals are surviving which is pretty exciting. People seem to be practically begging for a revival of them.

The rest of the changes are basically a shuffle with a few swaps. Tic Tac Dough takes the 9:00AM ET slot, replacing Love Connection. Super Password takes the place of Tic Tac Dough‘s old 10:00AM slot. There have been some people clamoring for Ray Combs Family Feud to return, and it will be weekdays at 10:30AM ET, replacing Wheel of Fortune. During GSN Live, Jeopardy! replaces Super Password at noon, Wheel of Fortune moves to 12:30PM ET, replacing Richard Dawson Family Feud. However, his edition of Feud will be seen at 2:00PM ET instead of Jeopardy!.

From then on, Friend or Foe? apparently didn’t work out and is being replaced by Lingo weekdays at 3:30PM ET. George Gray’s syndicated Weakest Link as well as Richard Karn’s Family Feud plays at 4:00PM ET replacing Anne Robinson’s primetime Weakest Link. That memorial service for Chain Reaction won’t last long as it replaces the 5:00PM ET airing of Richard Karn’s Family Feud. Finally, two notes were sent to us about the east/west coast feed:

Starting the week on Monday, July 21st and going forward, the shows airing Mondays through Fridays from 3:00p to 6:00p on the East Coast Feed will be simulcast on the West Coast Feed from 12:00p to 3:00p. The programs airing on the East Coast Feed Mondays through Fridays from 9:00a to 12:00p will be broadcast on the West Coat Feed from 3:00p to 6:00p.

We will continue to simulcast the programs airing on Mondays through Fridays from 12:00p to 3:00p on the East Coast Feed and 9:00a to 12:00p on the West Coast Feed (as we have been since February 25th).

I’m glad TTD is staying, though I’m not thrilled with the earlier slot. Totally bummed that SP is moving out of GSN Live. I think that’s a great lead-off for the block…if they can’t/won’t bring Pyramid back. IIRC, SP originally aired at the noon hour…so it seemed a perfect fit (and is my favorite of the Passwords). Pairing J! and WoF just seems like lazy programming to me. Not a good change IMHO, especially during the Live Block.

well I don’t think Lingo is cancelled this doesn’t look good, but they did that before when lingo was almsot canned after season 3, they started poker royale and said they didn’t have the funds for both that and lingo but soon brought it back. Lingo had a good run and as much as I’d like to see it last longer, in its current from it has no longevity.

So wait, Karn Feud is airing at 4:30 and then again at 5:30? Or did you mean to say that Chain Reaction is moving in at 5:30?

  • Scooter says:

You know, I was waiting for the day that Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune would be paired together. Maybe it was a mystical vision I saw. Or just the predictiblity of GSN.

  • Julia says:

Wait…Karn feud? I thought they dumped him for O’Hurley.

Other than that, I think these are good changes. Putting TTD on at 9 AM gets it out of the way of any TPiR airings, and since it’s one of their biggest rerun acquisitions, I suppose they would want to get the best time slot. Frankly, I see this as a revert back to the 200o2 days when their lineup was getting OK ratings across the board. I like the changes.

  • devares says:

Actually, Julia, they’ve replaced one of the Karn Feud with O’Hurley’s. Anyway, I’ve seen nothing wrong with the lineup change. Catch-21′s airing in Lingo’s time slot could very well spell the demise of it (although IMHO, Lingo ended after Season 4 when they “retooled” it).

I swear, as soon as I have what is on when just about memorized, they change it all up on me. I’m really sad about Friend or Foe leaving too. :( I will record a few episodes though. It was nice to see it regularly again for a little bit. At least Whammy and Russian Roulette is staying on.

It also kind of annoys me that the schedule is kind of all over the place when they shuffle it around. Like Family Feud is all spread around the day, and Password Plus and Super Password are on far apart too. At least they finally put Jeopardy and Wheel together, even though I hate Jeopardy, I’m glad its not going to be stuck in at 2 like it is now.

I like the changes. I am sad that FoF is leaving but I’m definitely GLAD that Anne Robinson’s Weakest Link is getting the shaft again and being replaced with an episode of George Gray’s weakest Link. I was hoping to see this come back.

  • John says:

I just get used to watching Lingo and you take it off. Also get another MC for BINGO. Never did like weakest link. I watched Catch 21, You should never have put it on to begin with. Weakestr format ever.

Fred and Holy should have longer time slot instead of commercial times. How about putting them for 30 minutes twice a day, Noon and 1PM
