Catch 21 – Busted Brains

One of the episodes of Catch 21 last week proved to be more memorable than most, mainly due to one contestant who should probably be bleaching her hair.

    Happened again tonight.

yeah pretty dumb, at the very least she should ahve played the 7 and stopped. there’s only 4 8s in the deck and 42 or 43 cards left, which means the odds were like 10-1 and she was only gonna win 5 times her money, bad gamble.

The thing about Miss-Give-It-To-Jenny is that she gambled because she still had power chips remaining when she reached the ‘bustable’ position. She’s not the only one to take that gamble, not by a long shot. And hey, she still gets $1,000, not a bad reward for being so generous earlier. : )

Jennifer’s reaction when she first realizes what’s happening in Round One – I *love* that squint.

Well, I was talking to someone who played on this season of the show. I think hearing about the casting director might explain why some of these dingbats get on the show.’ This is from my friend whose appearance is forthcoming:

“I swear, the casting director on that show is completely anal about the contestants being loud and animated. She harps and begs and threatens that she’ll never put you on another one of her shows if you don’t please her. They actually have the contestants rehearse how they’re going to “yell” their answers, as her motto is “yell the answer with confidence – if you’re right you come off great, and if you’re wrong, you’ll give a good reaction.” Then, she made me promise that *if* I got to the end round, that when Alfonso runs through the amounts ya can win, that I say/yell the amounts along with him… so, whatever. I feel kinda sorry for her too, as so many of the players on that show don’t know what the hell they’re doing and have made such stupid moves with the cards, which of course reflects badly on her with the producers… “

That woman could have had a V8.

I haven’t watched a lot of “Catch 21″ episodes, but in theory, wouldn’t it sometimes make sense to intentionally give one of your opponents a 21, if you thought that you were helping the weaker contestant and eliminating the stronger contestant? It’s kind of like the way “Weakest Link” usually worked — when it got down to three contestants, the two weaker contestants would vote together to eliminate the smartest one.

  • Chris Parsley says:

Ed, while yes that could be a logical arguement for a play strategy, this would of been completely against this as the player she gave the 21 to had shown to be the strongest player to that point.

In addition, taking the 7 would of given 2 draws at that same 4 card hit (the Ace), so the power chip, if u wanted to play on, was the wrong move.

Look on the bright side she did win the $1,000 from the main game and with that she should dye her hair to blonde. I would have crapped my pants if she won the $25k, IMO she should be disqualified for giving a player a 21 like that.

Yeah, that’s pretty bad. And yeah, it happened again tonight, much to our dismay. Where did they find these people?

  • Brad D. says:

This is nothing compared to what Scher did on the 5/11/09 episode imo.

Here’s an excerpt taking from the gsn boards:
“In the bonus round, she got an ace to open two of her hands, and a 3 to open the third. Next card was a 4 which she played on the 3 to give her 7, and sure enough luck smiled on her yet again as she was immediately dealt another 4, which she played on the 7. With three 11′s showing and four power chips in hand, a $25,000 victory seemed inevitable. Next card was 10-valued to give her her first 21 for $1000. Then came a 9, which should have been an easy call to use a power chip. But no, Scher played the 9 on her remaining ace to give her a soft 20, and lo and behold, following were three 10-valued cards, which gave her a second 21 for $5000 but then required power chips. Needless to say, she couldn’t convert her 11 that she ruined into a 21. Along the way she made another bone-headed move, where with one power chip left she made her soft 20 a hard 12.

She had three 11′s and four power chips and she played a card on an 11 (instead of using a power chip), messing up her chances of winning $25,000.

I’m still stunned to this day. Like Marko said, where do they find these people?

    Well then.

On the bright side, I do like the changes to the set.

On the other hand, please tell me I was not the only one who was cheering “C’mon six!” after Angeli got that phone question.

  • J.C. says:

Changes to the set are ok, change to the theme song, well when I can barely tell how the song goes, even when the audience isn’t going crazy over nothing, it’s not good for a theme song. As to the contestants……..am I the only one who values intelligence anymore?
