Casting Call: “Newlywed Game” and a Twisted “Newlywed Game”

We wrote about this a bit yesterday, but let’s put this in the marquis more.  There’s a casting notice going around for a new show that’s a twist on the classic Newlywed Game format.  In this version, not only will you and your spouse be competing, but your ex will be involved also.  Right now the game is set to have a husband, his current wife, and his ex-wife.  It’s called Modern Marriage, and they are shooting a pilot soon for network executives.  No idea who it’s for, but a show like this really is regulated to somewhere on cable.  If you want to be involved in it, click here. They are searching for trios currently.  They are paying $400 to compete plus other cash prizes for winning the game.

For those who think this sounds awfully familiar, it probably should.  This is essentially the format of the old game show 3’s A Crowd.  The classic 70s version was between a man, a wife, and his secretary.  This lasted for seven months.  Game Show Network revived it in 2000 with the teams varying in relationship, but often involving exes.  It lasted for two seasons.  The show seems to have never really clicked.  Probably because it’s incredibly awkward.  But Modern Marriage isn’t the same, so we’ll see what they can come up with.  Perhaps they made this idea work finally.

But in original Newlywed Game news, GSN is currently casting contestants for a third season.  The show’s been a hit the past two seasons, and season three is searching for newlywed couples to compete and attempt to win a second honeymoon.  Auditions are going on right now, so they’re wanting to get this going.  If Newlywed Game got renewed, I’d expect to see casting notices for Catch 21, GSN’s other hit original series, popping up soon.  Click here if you want to compete in The Newlywed Game.

  • Well, Modern Marriage sounds really really icky to me. This does scream a lot like 3's a Crowd and we all know how that one turned out. It sent Barris into self exile and most of his shows, if not all of them, ended in 1980 after 3's a Crowd was worldly panned. So, I probably won't be tuning into Modern Marriage.

Newlywed Game on the other hand needs to kick Carnie to the curb. She doesn't have that knack for Newlywed Game and seeing how Unstapled is failing right now, it would be best for GSN to cut their losses with her and maybe get a new host. I honestly could see George Gray or maybe get Diamond Dallas Page from Unstapled to host the show.

Modern Marriage MIGHT work. It obviously was a huge bomb 30 years ago, but society & family values was much, much different back then. I've seen the original version on YouTube, and I didn't care for it at all. I JUST got a the premeire of All New 3's a Crowd in a tape trade, but I haven't got around to watching it yet.

First of all, to Robert, I say Carnie's doing an alright job though she is no Bob Eubanks; and I say she stays. Second of all, that's what I was going to say what about Catch 21? Catch 21 deserves a nice long run like Lingo had and maybe even a chance at a syndicated version.

"But Modern Marriage isn’t the same…

    ok…let's see….

Modern Marriage: A man, his wife, and his ex.
    All-New 3's a Crowd: A man, his wife/gf, and his ex.
Peck's 3's a Crowd: A man, his wife, and his secretary (who let's face it is probably his ex as well :-P)

    'splain the difference to me?

    Higher divorce rate?

  • George Gray.

First time I heard that name in a while. I emailed him once, he did respond.

  • Craig says:

What did he say, Brandon? Just curious.

  • Craig says:

Right, my namesake friend. And is it any wonder half of all marriages end up in divorce anyways?

As for Modern Marriage, I think I'll pass on that one

  • Meh, it was a friendly little chat. He said I was crazy for believing he was "almost as good as Anne Robinson." Did a little bit of the Weakest Link picking but overall it was nice.
